MEGA does not give every free user a guaranteed quota or fixed reset time. Its support says the free transfer limit is based on downloads from an IP address over the preceding six hours, while available capacity varies with network use, ISP, country, and time of day. Waiting may restore capacity, but there is no universal countdown that applies to everyone.
How long do I have to wait after MEGA says transfer quota exceeded?
MEGA support describes free quota as based on data downloaded from your IP address over the past six hours. That is a rolling usage basis, not a promise that the warning will disappear exactly six hours after a particular download. Available capacity varies with network conditions and geography, so the wait can differ by user and situation. MEGA support has not stated a fixed free allowance or guaranteed reset hour. If you can postpone the transfer, wait and try again later. The evidence does not establish an exact time to retry; a displayed countdown, if available, should not be treated as a universal reset schedule.

Why am I over quota when I haven’t downloaded anything?
For free access, MEGA says quota is measured per IP address, not per account. Activity from another person using the same public IP can therefore affect what you can transfer. A VPN exit, shared connection, or dynamic IP assignment can also mean the address you are using has prior usage attributed to it. MEGA support response reproduced on Trustpilot, August 24, 2026.

If the warning seems unexpected, check whether you are on a shared network or VPN. The limit is tied to the IP address rather than solely to your own account history, so your own recent downloads may not explain all of the usage.
Does streaming count toward MEGA transfer quota?
Yes. MEGA defines transfer quota as the total volume of data downloaded from MEGA and says streaming consumes it too. Watching or streaming a file can therefore contribute to the limit even when you did not save that file as a conventional download. MEGA support response reproduced on Trustpilot, August 24, 2026.
