No—MEGA says it does not cap free download speed at a fixed number of gigabytes. Instead, free and non-logged-in users have a variable transfer quota. When that quota is used, the download pauses and can resume after quota resets. The available amount varies, so there is no reliable universal “X GB” threshold.
Is MEGA throttling your download after a set number of GB?
MEGA describes the limit as a transfer quota, not a fixed speed throttle. In a response dated January 7, 2026, MEGA stated, “MEGA does not limit download speed for free users.” The response says that free and non-logged-in users can reach a quota, at which point downloads pause automatically rather than continuing at a reduced speed. That means there is no published universal cutoff such as 5 GB for every user. The amount available depends on IP-based usage and network conditions, so the point at which a download pauses can differ.

MEGA’s response describes the free and non-logged-in allowance as the total data transferred from an IP over a rolling six-hour period. The available quota varies with system utilization and factors such as time of day, internet service provider, and country. The six-hour period describes the quota framework; it is not a promise that every user receives the same amount of data or that a specific paused download will resume at a guaranteed time.

Because the quota is tied to an IP address, other people using the same public IP may affect how much transfer allowance is available—even if you personally have not downloaded much. Once the quota is exhausted, MEGA says the transfer resumes after quota resets. Waiting is an option; MEGA also says users can upgrade for additional transfer quota. Its response does not give an exact reset time or a fixed allowance for an individual user. MEGA’s response on Trustpilot
Quota exhaustion versus a MEGAcmd speed limit
A service transfer quota and a speed limit configured in MEGAcmd are separate mechanisms. One controls how much data can be transferred before a pause; the other controls the client’s download rate.

| Mechanism | What it controls | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| MEGA transfer quota | Total data transferred before free or non-logged-in downloads pause | Variable and IP-based; downloads pause when the quota is reached and resume after it resets. MEGA’s response on Trustpilot |
| MEGAcmd speed limit | The client’s configured upload or download rate | The speedlimit command sets or reads the client rate; zero means unlimited local speed. This does not establish a way around MEGA’s transfer quota. MEGAcmd documentation |
What to check when a MEGA download is slow or stops
- Check whether it paused or is still transferring slowly. A pause or quota message is consistent with quota exhaustion. A continuously slow transfer is not, by itself, proof of a quota limit.
- If you use MEGAcmd, inspect its local speed-limit setting. The documented
speedlimitcommand sets or reads upload and download rates; zero means unlimited client speed. Changing this setting affects the client-side rate, not the service quota. MEGAcmd documentation - If MEGA reports that the quota is exhausted, wait for it to reset. MEGA says the paused transfer resumes when quota becomes available again, but does not promise an exact reset time. An upgrade is another option if you need additional transfer quota. A VPN, a different IP address, or a third-party tool is not an endorsed workaround in the cited guidance. The evidence here explains quota-related pauses; it does not diagnose every cause of a slow or interrupted download.
