Xinhua’s 2018 AI news anchor was an early, widely publicized attempt to have a computer-generated presenter read news on camera. Developed by China’s state news agency with Sogou, it was presented as a way to reduce production costs and improve efficiency. Calling it the “world’s first,” however, depends on the definition: later projects made separate claims about an Arabic-speaking presenter, a female AI presenter, or a regional-language anchor.
What Xinhua’s 2018 system was
China’s state news agency Xinhua developed the presenter with technology company Sogou. According to Victor Tangermann’s 2018 Futurism report, live broadcast videos were used to teach the system how to speak. The result combined a digitally generated face with synthesized speech and prepared news copy.
Futurism also showed an English-language version in a video. Its 2018 description called the delivery robotic and awkward, with the mouth movement standing out as the clearest visual weakness. Those observations describe that demonstration; they are not a current assessment of the system or of AI presenters generally.

What “world’s first” does—and does not—mean
“World’s first” was the framing used by Futurism’s headline, but the phrase is broader than the evidence supports. It can mean the first publicly announced system of a particular type, the first to appear in a specific language, the first female-presenting system, or the first regional-language presenter. Those are different milestones.

The available 2018 account supports describing Xinhua’s system as an early or first AI news anchor in the context of that announcement. It does not establish universal priority across every earlier experiment, synthetic presenter, language, or definition of “news anchor.” The reports below concern different systems and should not be treated as a controlled technical comparison.
How the Xinhua anchor was supposed to work
Training from broadcast footage
The Futurism report said Sogou and Xinhua used live broadcast videos to teach the system to speak. That indicates a system modeled on existing presenter footage rather than a human anchor being replaced in real time during the demonstration.
Reading news rather than interviewing guests
The cited coverage describes a presenter delivering news text. It does not document independent reporting, editorial judgment, or live interviews by the 2018 system. Those distinctions matter: reading prepared copy is a narrower task than conducting a conversation or reporting from the field.

English demonstration
An English version appeared in the video covered by Futurism. The article characterized the speech as robotic and awkward and identified the mouth as the most obvious break in the visual illusion. Because this is an observation from 2018, it should not be read as a claim about later versions or current synthetic-media quality.
Why Xinhua said it wanted an AI anchor
Futurism attributed the stated goal of lowering news-production costs and improving efficiency to an Xinhua blog post. The report did not provide a savings percentage, production total, or independent performance test. “Reduce costs” was therefore an objective, not a measured result established by the coverage.

The 2019 Arabic-presenter project
In April 2019, The National reported that Abu Dhabi Media and Sogou had agreed to develop an Arabic-speaking AI news presenter. The paper described it as the first AI anchor capable of speaking Arabic and said the partners hoped it would appear regularly within 12 months.

That was an announcement of a planned project. It does not prove that a launch occurred on schedule. The National also reported that the planned system could not yet conduct interviews with human guests, an important limitation when comparing it with a human newsroom presenter.
The National quoted Wang Yanfeng, general manager of Sogou’s Voice Interaction Technology Centre: “It’s more steady than a human, it never makes mistakes,”. This was a company representative’s assertion at the project announcement, not an independently demonstrated fact about AI systems.

Dhaka Tribune reported in 2023 that Odisha TV’s Lisa was a regional AI news anchor expected to present updates in Odia and English. This example shows why a superlative needs a scope. A presenter can be notable for regional-language coverage without being the first AI news anchor worldwide, and a language-specific milestone does not replace the earlier Xinhua claim.

How to evaluate an AI-anchor “first” claim
- Define the category: Is the claim about the first AI presenter overall, the first in a language, the first female-presenting anchor, or the first regional service?
- Check the date and organization: Identify who made the claim and when, since later announcements may describe different projects.
- Separate demonstration from deployment: A video or project announcement is not the same as a regularly operating newsroom service.
- Identify the task: Reading prepared text, generating speech, answering questions, and conducting live interviews require different capabilities.
- Verify the language: “Supports” may mean demonstrated, planned, or merely announced. The source should make that status clear.
- Look for measured evidence: A stated goal such as lower costs is not proof of a specific saving without an independent measurement.
The accurate historical takeaway
Xinhua and Sogou’s 2018 presenter was an important public milestone in synthetic news presentation and was promoted as a way to make production more efficient. The evidence supports calling it an early or first AI news anchor within that historical framing, not awarding it an uncontested first across every possible definition.
The 2019 Abu Dhabi Media–Sogou announcement and the 2023 report on Odisha TV’s Lisa illustrate how the field’s later “first” language became more specific—Arabic-speaking in one case and regional-language in another. Keeping those scopes attached to each claim is the only reliable way to compare them.
