Researchers are making AI-generated hybrid animals, tools that ask people reflective questions, interfaces for spotting deepfakes, and AI agents that explore movement through a physical display. These projects come from different experiments at MIT Media Lab; “bringing to life” describes how people can interact with their outputs, not evidence that the systems are conscious or biologically alive.
Three very different kinds of AI creation
| Project | What it makes or enables | How people interact with it |
|---|---|---|
| Meet the Ganimals | Hybrid animal images and digital creatures made with generative adversarial networks (GANs). | Participants discover, breed, and feed creatures; user attention helps shape which ones reproduce more often. |
| What’s Taking Form? | A series of early experiments, including a reflective-question tool, a deepfake-awareness project, and a creative interface. | People use or collaborate with AI through different experimental tools rather than encountering one shared system. |
| I Gave an AI a Body | An AI agent’s movements expressed through a physical shape display. | The agent explores forms on an actuated pin grid, while researchers record and select movement variations. |
Meet the Ganimals: hybrid creatures shaped by attention
MIT Media Lab credits Ziv Epstein on Meet the Ganimals, a project that uses generative adversarial networks to imagine new species. As the project description puts it, “New generative AI technologies (such as the Generative Adversarial Network, or GAN) can allow us to imagine new species.”
The creatures combine features associated with different animals. One example is a goldfish–golden retriever hybrid, described with orange coloring, large eyes, and drooping ears. The point is not just to generate an unusual image: the project invites people to discover, breed, and feed digital “ganimals.” In its setup, attention functions as food. Creatures that attract more engagement gain an advantage and reproduce more often.
That process resembles evolution, but it is not biological evolution in nature. Selection is mediated by the system’s design and participants’ aesthetic preferences: engagement influences which generated creatures get to reproduce within the experiment.

What’s Taking Form?: AI experiments beyond strange images
MIT Media Lab’s What’s Taking Form? series presents work that is unfinished, evolving, and sometimes weird. Its examples show how experimental AI can appear as a tool or interface, not only as an image generator.
- Gadfly: Om Gokhale’s project is described as an AI tool that acts as a critical instigator by asking reflective questions.
- Unspectacular Feed: Graduate student Saetbyeol Leeyouk is developing a tool to help Instagram users spot deepfakes.
- Tangible Prompting: Lucy Li’s playful, board-game-inspired interface is designed for creative collaboration between two people and an AI system.
The series also features Miranda Lin Li and Labububot, introduced as a rare monster. The listing makes it a vivid example of the series’ unusual range, but does not provide enough technical detail to characterize how it works.

I Gave an AI a Body: exploring movement with a shape display
In I Gave an AI a Body, MIT Media Lab identifies Cyrus Clarke as the project contact. The project connected an autonomous AI agent running on a Mac mini to inFORM, a 30×30 actuated pin grid, later updated as neoFORM. Rather than assigning a fixed sequence of movements, Clarke gave the agent access to the display code and asked it to explore expression through physical form.

Clarke describes building bodylab, a pipeline for generating, recording, and selecting movement variations for a gesture vocabulary. These are the project’s reported experimental steps, not independently reproduced findings or evidence of an agent’s inner experience.

The phrase covers several different kinds of interaction: generated creatures shaped by audience participation, software that prompts or assists people, and an AI agent whose output takes physical form. In each case, the researchers define the system, its interface, and the rules for interpreting its outputs. The cited project descriptions document aims and reported behavior; they do not establish that any system is sentient, conscious, or literally alive.

MIT Media Lab describes What’s Taking Form? as “early explorations — unfinished, evolving, and sometimes weird.” That is a useful way to understand the examples: they are research projects probing how AI-generated media, collaborative tools, and physical interfaces might work, rather than finished consumer products.
