Two deep-sea sea spiders, Colossendeis tasmanica and Colossendeis minor, have been photographed glowing in a study reported in 2026. They are pycnogonids—not true spiders. The reported light came from their legs, but why the animals glow is still unknown.
What are the glowing deep-sea giants?
Sea spiders are marine animals in the group Pycnogonida, separate from true spiders. The two species in the reported observations are Colossendeis tasmanica and Colossendeis minor. They were collected during a 2017 deep-sea survey off Australia’s east coast, at reported depths of 1,006 to 4,977 meters.
The study, by Jérôme Mallefet and colleagues, is titled “Abyssal glowing sea spider, first insight into pycnogonid luminescence” and appeared in Deep-Sea Research Part I: Oceanographic Research Papers in 2026. A Phys.org report published October 6, 2026 describes the findings.

How did the sea spiders glow?
Researchers tested the animals in a dark room aboard the survey ship. Gentle pinching and chemical triggers elicited light from their legs. The results below are measurements reported for the tested animals, not proof that every individual of either species responds identically.

Colossendeis tasmanica: blue light concentrated in the legs
In C. tasmanica, the reported emission was deep blue, measured at 449 nanometers. Researchers observed it only in the legs; it was brightest at the distal propodus—the segment near the end of a leg—and faded toward the body.
Chemical and manual stimulation produced different responses
In the reported tests, chemical stimulation elicited a glow lasting five to ten minutes. Manual stimulation produced a weaker glow, lasting from a few seconds to more than two minutes. These were experimental triggers, not evidence that the spiders use separate natural behaviors to produce light.

What may produce the light?
Laboratory investigations used frozen leg extracts and microscopy of tissue sections. The microscopy indicated light production in gut-associated cells in the legs. That location led the researchers to suggest the animals may obtain a light-emitting ingredient through their diet.

Hydrogen peroxide and other reactions triggered light in the tissue, and the response increased with calcium. These results point toward a possible photoprotein system, but they do not identify or confirm the exact molecule or cells. The authors say molecular-level validation is still needed.

Why do sea spiders glow?
The purpose has not been established. The observations do not show whether the light helps with feeding, defense, communication, or another function, so it would be premature to describe the glow as a hunting strategy or warning signal. As the authors put it, “The precise ecological roles of pycnogonid bioluminescence remain elusive and warrant further study.”

- Reported: two species, C. tasmanica and C. minor, showed bioluminescence in observations of animals collected off eastern Australia.
- Measured in C. tasmanica: blue light at 449 nanometers, localized to the legs and brightest near their tips.
- Suggested, not confirmed: a photoprotein-like mechanism and a possible dietary source for a light-emitting ingredient.
- Still unknown: the precise mechanism at the molecular level and the ecological role of the light.
The reported collection included seven C. tasmanica and two C. minor. That small sample does not establish how common bioluminescence is among sea spiders, and no broader prevalence figure is available from the reported sources.
