Moving a rocket stack from Kennedy Space Center’s Vehicle Assembly Building to a launch pad is a slow, all-shift operation—not a quick drive. In a 2022 interview, Breanne Rohloff, an engineer for NASA contractor Jacobs, described driving the crawler that carries the assembled vehicle along the roughly four-mile route at 0.8 miles per hour. The interview headline called the crawler 6.5 million pounds; Rohloff’s own estimate was 6 million pounds.
Who is Breanne Rohloff?
Rohloff told Futurism that she studied engineering at the University of Central Florida, interned at Kennedy Space Center, and joined the crawler team after graduating. She works as an engineer for NASA contractor Jacobs. Her memorable description of the team’s role was: “We’re like the Space Center’s Uber for rockets.”
The metaphor captures the job’s purpose, but the crew does not assemble the rocket. Its work is to prepare and maintain the crawler, pick up the assembled stack, transport it to the pad, set it down, and move the crawler away.
How long does a crawler move take?
Rohloff described the trip from the Vehicle Assembly Building to the launch pad as about four miles. At the reported speed of 0.8 miles per hour, the crawler’s pace is far below walking speed. She said the move takes a whole eight-hour shift, including picking up and setting down the stack and clearing the pad; that is her account of the full operation, not simply the time spent traveling at a steady speed.

- WE IGNITE IMAGINATIONS: Since 1958, Estes has created educational rocket kits and displays designed for an unforgettable aerospace experience. As a family-owned company, we have grown to offer exciting STEM products that engage aspiring rocketeers and the future minds of aerospace.
The weight figure also needs attribution: the 2022 Futurism headline gives 6.5 million pounds, while Rohloff recalled the crawler weighing 6 million pounds. Those are the two figures reported in the interview, not a single independently verified current specification. The University of Central Florida republished the interview, rather than supplying a separate current equipment specification. UCF’s republication retains the profile’s historical context.
What is it like to drive the crawler?
It is a matter of sightlines, small corrections, and anticipating a vehicle that responds slowly. Rohloff said the cab is at the crawler’s front right, while steering is controlled from the middle. The driver stands and uses fixed visual references along the crawlerway, checking the positions of both the front and rear tracks rather than relying on the view from the cab alone.

She reported that the crawler can steer by a maximum of six degrees in one direction. At 0.8 miles per hour, steering still demands attention: “You’d think a turn wouldn’t sneak up on you, but it will sneak up on you.” Small adjustments and watching the track positions help the driver judge how the crawler is following the route.

Rohloff described a jacking, equalizing, and leveling system—the JEL system—with hydraulic cylinders at each corner. As the crawler climbs the launch-pad slope, the cylinders adjust so the top surface carrying the stack stays level. She said operators watch the system’s limits. Her interview offers an operational explanation, not detailed engineering tolerances or a complete specification of the system.

What else is part of the crawler crew’s work?
Maintenance and inspections
Rohloff said the team performs substantial preventative maintenance and corrective maintenance when it notices a problem. Walkdowns are part of preparing for a move, so the work is not confined to driving on the crawlerway.
Wildlife awareness
In her account, walkdowns and observations also help the team spot wildlife around the route. She named hogs, coyotes, alligators, tortoises, and mice, and said the crew can stop so an animal can be moved safely. This describes the practice she discussed in the interview, not a comprehensive statement of Kennedy Space Center wildlife policy.

What the 2022 profile does—and does not—establish
The interview was published in February 2022 and discussed planned Space Launch System and Orion operations at that time. Its forward-looking launch language is historical, not a current schedule. The profile provides Rohloff’s account of the job and its operating figures; it does not establish today’s crawler configuration, contractor staffing, operator roster, launch schedule, or current procedures.
