BabyX is a computer-generated infant simulation developed by Dr. Mark Sagar and Soul Machines. It responds to a person’s voice, gestures, and facial expressions, and can produce infant-like behaviors such as smiling, laughing, crying, and showing frustration. Researchers use it to investigate caregiver–infant interaction; it is a research model, not a biological baby or a complete account of infant development.
What is BabyX?
BabyX, also written Baby X, is an interactive virtual infant that runs on a screen. The University of Auckland reported its unveiling in 2017 as a tool for research into how adults interact with babies. Its realistic appearance and responsive behavior are intended to make those interactions possible to study under controlled conditions.
BabyX takes in video and audio, responds in real time, and can interact with objects in a simulated environment. Its infant-like expressions and actions are generated by computational models, including a simulated human brain. “Astonishingly real” describes its visual and interactive realism—not biological reality.
Can BabyX laugh and cry?
Yes. University of Auckland descriptions say BabyX can smile, laugh, cry, and become frustrated in response to a social partner. Those are simulated behaviors, not evidence that the system experiences the feelings associated with them. Published descriptions do not establish that BabyX is conscious or has subjective feelings.

How does BabyX learn?
Some descriptions say BabyX can learn words and actions. That refers to modeled computational capabilities; it should not be read as proof of human-like understanding or learning. A 2021 ethics paper described the models at that time as “still fairly simple.” The available accounts do not show that BabyX develops or learns as a human infant does.
What are researchers using BabyX to study?
How infant behavior shapes caregiver responses
A University of Auckland announcement in 2024 described a study of how infant behavior affects caregiver responsiveness. Researchers planned to record primary caregivers interacting with BabyX through digital games such as puzzles. The announcement said they were seeking 80 caregivers of children aged 12 to 36 months; that figure is a recruitment target, not a completed sample or a study result. The Early Learning Lab describes the broader aim as understanding which infant behaviors initiate and maintain caregiver responsiveness, with the longer-term goal of informing interventions that could improve parental responsiveness.

Professor Annette Henderson, director of the University of Auckland Early Learning Laboratory, explained the gap the work addresses: “Decades of research has shown us that babies are incredibly responsive to even very subtle changes in where caregivers are looking, what they say and how they say it.” She added: “However, very little is known about how changes in babies’ behaviour affects their caregivers’ responses – we aim to close that loop.”

A peer-reviewed study first published online in 2022 and included in a 2023 journal issue presented BabyX as an 18-month-old virtual infant model for nonverbal cooperation and turn-taking. The authors reported that observations of real infant–caregiver interactions were consistent with their model and described it as an initial foundation for more comprehensive modeling. This is early-stage evidence, not proof that BabyX behaves or learns like a human child.

Why use a simulated infant?
With BabyX, researchers can vary aspects of a simulated infant’s responsiveness in ways that would not be possible with a human baby. They can then compare the resulting interactions with observations of real infant–caregiver exchanges. Keeping those two kinds of evidence distinct matters: a behavior produced by the simulation is evidence about the model, while observations involving real participants provide context for studying human interaction.

BabyX can help researchers examine two-way social interaction: how a baby’s signals may shape a caregiver’s response, as well as how a caregiver’s behavior may affect the baby. A 2026 article by Henderson and coauthors argues that BabyX offers an opportunity to study this social contingency. It presents a research direction, not a claim that BabyX has settled questions about infant development or caregiver behavior.

- What it can demonstrate: how a computational infant model responds to controlled inputs and how people interact with that model.
- What it cannot establish by itself: how all human infants behave, whether a simulated response reflects an infant’s inner experience, or whether the system is conscious.
- How to assess a finding: check whether it concerns BabyX or real participants, which signals researchers controlled or observed, and whether the evidence is a proposed use, an early model, or a reported result.
