Affetto is a child-like android developed at Osaka University for research into child development, caregiver-child attachment, and human-robot interaction. It is a physical robot—not a CGI character—with compliant skin that actuators deform to create facial expressions. Researchers have worked to measure and control those deformations, and later explored expressions that change over time to suggest moods such as excitement or sleepiness.
What is Affetto?
Affetto is an android research platform designed to resemble a young child. The project’s early description framed it as resembling a 1- to 2-year-old, with a realistic appearance intended to support studies of development and interaction between people and robots. Osaka University introduced the concept in 2011 (Osaka University, 2011).
It is not a mass-market toy or a home robot. Its child-like form lets researchers investigate how people respond to a robot with a more human appearance and how physical interaction might be studied under child-like conditions.
How does Affetto make facial expressions?
Actuators deform a soft surface
Affetto does not rely on a screen displaying an animated face. Its expressions come from mechanical movement beneath compliant, human-like skin. The 2015 Osaka University description of the upper body reports pneumatic actuation combined with linear and rotary mechanisms, with 22 degrees of freedom in a space equivalent to the upper body of an 80 cm-tall child. The flexible skin was intended to make movement and contact more like child-like interaction conditions (Osaka University, 2015).

- Three models, one lightweight platform R1 Air (20 DOF, monocular camera), R1 (26 DOF, binocular camera, head+waist joints), and R1 Edu (26 DOF + SDK/API for programming). All weigh ~29kg / 123cm – one person can lift, move, and fit into a car trunk.
- Easy setup – no coding required for basic use Unbox, power on, and start. Manual teaching feature: physically pose the robot, and it replays the motion. Graphical drag-and-drop programming also available.
- More DOF = more expressive movement 26‑DOF models (R1 / R1 Edu) add head and waist articulation for smoother dance and running. For safety reasons, only basic actions are currently available; advanced movements are not yet released.
- Voice interaction + two color options Responds to English voice commands (music, conversation, photo). Choose Gold or Blue‑White with automotive‑grade gloss paint.
- R1 Edu adds open development SDK/API access for custom programming, simulation platforms, and future Unistore content downloads. Adult use only – under 18 requires adult supervision.
Researchers measured how the face moves
Soft skin and nonlinear mechanisms make expression control difficult: the same actuator input may not always create the same surface movement. In a 2018 study, researchers measured motion at 116 points on Affetto’s facial surface and characterized actuator sensitivity, hysteresis, and timing differences. The upgraded model retained 22 total degrees of freedom and used a more reliable actuation mechanism (2018 face-system study).
Those measurements helped turn facial movement from something judged only by appearance into something that could be modeled and controlled. Osaka University reported that the system could produce more precise smiles and frowns, including different smile trajectories—for example, one that opens quickly and another that develops cautiously (Osaka University, 2018).

Can you buy an Affetto robot?
The cited sources describe Affetto as a research platform; they do not document it as available for purchase. There is no supported retail price, consumer model, or purchase channel established here. A generic humanoid toy is not an Affetto substitute: the platform’s relevant features include deformable physical skin, actuator-based movement, and research into modeling expression over time. Any institutional research or education partnership would need to be confirmed directly with Osaka University.

What makes Affetto different from a screen-faced robot?
A screen can display expressions as pixels. Affetto’s face changes through physical deformation of a skin surface, so its movement depends on the mechanics and material beneath that surface. When evaluating expressive robots, useful points of comparison include whether a face is physical or screen-based, how its actuators are arranged, how consistently they move compliant materials, and whether the system models timing and hysteresis. It also matters whether expressions are fixed poses or can develop continuously as mood-like dynamics.
