Medtronic’s growth story has strengthened, but it has not yet displaced the dividend as the company’s defining investor narrative. FY26 sales grew faster than earnings, and margins narrowed; then, in Q1 FY27, revenue accelerated and management raised its full-year outlook. The new challenge is to turn that top-line momentum into sustained earnings and cash generation—while the 49-year dividend-increase streak remains a historical record, not a guarantee of another raise.
Can Medtronic keep raising its dividend?
Medtronic announced a quarterly dividend of $0.72 per ordinary share on June 3, 2026, equivalent to $2.88 annualized. The company called the increase its 49th consecutive year of dividend increases. That describes the board’s record through this announcement; it does not promise future increases.
The FY26 cash figures provide context for the payout, though they do not by themselves establish its future safety. Medtronic reported $5.4 billion in free cash flow, up 4.6%, and $7.3 billion in cash from operations. It returned $4.2 billion through dividends and net share repurchases combined, so that total should not be read as dividends alone. Medtronic’s FY26 results and dividend announcement gives the company’s reported figures.

Is growth finally the real story?
The latest results make growth a more compelling part of the case, but the evidence is mixed: FY26 sales growth outpaced earnings growth, while Q1 FY27 brought a sharp revenue increase and higher guidance.
FY26: sales advanced faster than earnings
For FY26, Medtronic reported revenue of $36.4 billion, up 8.4% as reported and 5.8% organically. Non-GAAP diluted EPS was $5.53, an increase of 0.7%. These measures are not interchangeable: organic growth is company-defined, and non-GAAP EPS is an adjusted measure, not GAAP earnings.
Profitability adds an important qualification. Non-GAAP operating profit increased 2.4%, but non-GAAP operating margin declined 130 basis points; GAAP operating margin was flat. In other words, the sales increase did not translate into equally strong adjusted per-share earnings growth, and the adjusted margin moved in the wrong direction. The figures are from Medtronic’s FY26 results.

Q1 FY27: acceleration and a raised outlook
For Q1 FY27, Medtronic reported revenue of $9.8 billion, up 13.7% both as reported and organically. In its September 1, 2026 release, the company raised its FY27 guidance to organic revenue growth of 7.25%–7.75% and non-GAAP diluted EPS of $5.94–$6.00. Those are management expectations, not achieved results. CFO Thierry Piéton said that operating performance and financial management had driven revenue and adjusted EPS ahead of expectations, allowing the company to raise guidance. See the Q1 FY27 release.

FY27 has an extra week
FY27 is a 53-week fiscal year. Medtronic estimated that the additional week contributed approximately $570 million to Q1 organic growth. The 13.7% quarterly figure is therefore not a clean measure of the underlying growth rate to expect each quarter, and it should not be annualized without accounting for the calendar effect.

The Diabetes business is included for the full FY27 year
Medtronic’s FY27 guidance includes Diabetes revenue for the full fiscal year. Its proxy describes MiniMed’s IPO in March 2026 as part of a multi-step separation plan, so FY26 and FY27 comparisons have a scope change as well as a calendar difference. Together, these points make the updated guidance informative, but not a like-for-like guarantee of the pace the business will sustain. The calendar estimate and guidance qualifications appear in the Q1 FY27 results release; the separation context is in Medtronic’s FY26 proxy statement.
What would show that growth has become the central story?
The key test is conversion: whether revenue growth can produce stronger earnings and cash flow without further margin erosion. FY26 offers a mixed starting point—free cash flow rose 4.6% to $5.4 billion, but non-GAAP EPS rose only 0.7% and non-GAAP operating margin fell 130 basis points. Q1 FY27 and the raised outlook improve the growth case, but one quarter and guidance cannot establish that the FY26 earnings-conversion gap has closed.

Growth also differed across businesses in FY26. Medtronic described Cardiovascular as growing at a high-single-digit organic rate, Neuroscience and Medical Surgical at low-single-digit rates, and Diabetes at a high-single-digit rate. These are company-reported descriptors, not identical growth rates across the portfolio; the company also changed portfolio reporting for FY27. Segment performance will therefore need to be read with the reporting basis in mind.

The streak shows that Medtronic has raised its dividend annually for 49 consecutive years through the increase announced in June 2026. FY26 cash generation provides useful evidence when assessing the distribution, but the available figures do not settle the question of future dividend decisions. Nor do reported growth and management guidance establish that the company will meet its targets or that its shares are attractively valued.

The clearest current reading is that growth has become a stronger competing story, not yet a proven replacement for the dividend narrative. FY26 exposed a gap between sales and earnings growth; Q1 FY27 improved the trajectory and prompted higher guidance. Sustained earnings conversion, margins and cash generation are what will determine whether that improvement lasts.
