The ally-turned-villain is Maxwell Lord. His mind control of Superman forced Wonder Woman into a defining choice: kill Lord to free Superman, or let the attack continue. The consequences reshaped Diana’s public image and her relationships with Superman and Batman. As reported on October 2, 2026, Lord had not appeared in DC’s Absolute Universe, though that is a time-bound report rather than a guarantee about future issues.

Who is Maxwell Lord?

Lord first entered this story as a businessman and Justice League International associate. DC describes him as a press liaison who manipulated events while helping establish the League as an international team. His role later shifted from behind-the-scenes operator to outright adversary, including a plan to control the metahuman community. DC’s retrospective on Maxwell Lord traces that change.

What happened in Wonder Woman #219?

In the 2005 “Sacrifice” storyline, Lord controlled Superman and made him attack his allies. Wonder Woman #219 concludes the four-part arc. DC’s issue page lists July 27, 2005 as its on-sale date, names Greg Rucka as writer, and identifies Maxwell Lord among the starring characters. Its publisher description calls the issue the story’s “stunning conclusion.” See DC’s Wonder Woman #219 listing.

DC’s retrospective on Wonder Woman’s battles says killing Lord was the only way available to free Superman. Diana killed him, but the act was not a clean victory: it forced her to weigh the life of one person against the danger posed to Superman and everyone he might harm. DC’s account of Wonder Woman’s battles explains the choice.

Why did the killing change Diana’s trajectory?

Lord’s death altered how the public saw Wonder Woman and strained her bonds with Batman and Superman. It also made Diana question her mission. The consequences reached beyond the immediate rescue: the story made her lethal choice a political and personal burden that continued into the next phase of her life.

DC’s official description for Wonder Woman #1 (2006) places the new status quo one year after Lord’s execution and the events of Infinite Crisis: “One year after the execution of Maxwell Lord and the earth-shattering events of INFINITE CRISIS, the DCU is still struggling to come to terms with its most powerful heroine.” The same listing frames the question around whether Diana is seen as a martyr or a murderer. Read DC’s issue description.

Has Maxwell Lord appeared in the Absolute Universe?

According to a ComicBook.com article dated October 2, 2026, Maxwell Lord had not appeared in the Absolute Universe at that time. The article speculates about possible future roles, but those possibilities are not confirmation of an appearance. Read the October 2, 2026 report.

DC’s official Absolute Wonder Woman #1 listing confirms the series’ launch, with an on-sale date of October 23, 2024, and identifies Kelly Thompson as writer and Hayden Sherman as artist. That catalog page is not a complete character-appearance index, so it cannot independently establish Lord’s absence across every Absolute title or later issue. See DC’s Absolute Wonder Woman #1 listing.
