If your Galaxy S21 runs out sooner than it used to, the most effective fix is usually a short sequence: find the apps and features using the most power, adjust the display, limit background activity for apps that do not need it, and turn on Power saving mode when a longer day matters more than full performance. Those steps can stretch the charge you already have. They cannot make a worn battery hold more energy, and they do not make the phone charge faster. Those are three different problems, so this guide treats them separately.
Three different goals, three different fixes
Battery complaints usually mix together three goals. Keeping them apart saves time, because a faster charger will not give you more hours on a charge, and a settings change will not restore capacity that the battery has already lost.

| Your goal | What actually helps | What does not help |
|---|---|---|
| Longer runtime on the current charge | Reviewing battery usage, lowering display demands, limiting background activity for unused apps, Power saving mode | A faster charger, which affects charging time rather than how long a full charge lasts |
| Faster charging | A compatible USB-C PD 3.0 adapter and the Super Fast Charging setting | Any change to usage settings, which does not alter charging speed |
| Restoring lost capacity | Battery status diagnostics in Samsung Members, followed by Samsung Support or an authorized service center if needed | Software tweaks. Samsung states that settings cannot restore worn capacity |
Step 1: Check what is using the battery
Change one thing at a time, starting with evidence. On most One UI versions, the battery usage list is under Settings > Battery. Labels, time ranges, and the exact layout vary by software version, region, and carrier, so look for a usage or “battery usage” list rather than a fixed label.
- Open Settings > Battery and note the apps or services at the top of the list.
- Look for anything that is high in the list but that you did not expect, such as a social app used heavily in the background or a navigation app left running.
- Note whether the heavy use is in the foreground (you were using the app) or background (the app ran while you were not). Foreground use is usually a habit to change. Background use is often a setting to change.
- Only then adjust the settings below, and check the usage list again after a day to see whether the change made a difference.
Step 2: Adjust display behavior
The display is one of the largest and most controllable drains. Samsung states that high brightness and a long screen timeout can both reduce battery time. Start with these adjustments:

- Brightness: Set a comfortable level under Settings > Display. Adaptive brightness can help, but it raises screen brightness in strong light, which uses more power outdoors.
- Screen timeout: Shorten the time before the screen turns off under Settings > Display > Screen timeout (the exact path can differ by One UI version). A shorter timeout is most useful if you often leave the phone on a table with the screen awake.
- Always On Display: If it is enabled, consider turning it off, or limiting it to a schedule, from the Lock screen settings. Its exact location varies by version.
- Connectivity you do not need: Turn off Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or hotspot when they are not in use. This is a habit change rather than a setting, and it matters most when you are away from a charger for a full day.
Lowering the screen brightness is simple, but it changes how the phone looks outdoors and in dim rooms. Choose the level that keeps the screen readable for you.
Step 3: Limit background activity for apps that do not need it
Samsung recommends checking high-use apps and limiting apps you rarely open. The usual route is Settings > Battery > Background usage limits, where One UI can place unused apps into a sleeping or deep sleeping state. The exact labels depend on the version installed.
The trade-off is important. A sleeping app may not run background functions or send notifications as it normally would. Restrict apps that you open on your own terms, such as a shopping app or a game. Leave alone messaging, calendar, authentication, alarm, and delivery apps unless you have confirmed you can live without timely alerts. After making a change, send yourself a test message or wait for a known notification to confirm it still arrives.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStep 4: Use Power saving mode when the charge matters most
Power saving mode is the broadest tool and the one to use when a full day is at risk. It reduces power use by limiting features and background activity. What it limits, and where the switch appears, varies by software version and region, so read the options on your own phone before turning it on.
Samsung’s guidance has shown different sets of controls across models and years:
- Canadian Samsung guidance dated May 23, 2026 describes Power saving as limiting features and background activity, along with sleeping unused apps, Device care, and a Light performance mode. Light performance mode is not guaranteed on every S21, so look for it rather than assuming it exists.
- An older Samsung Singapore guide dated July 19, 2022 lists examples of configurable options such as turning off Always On Display, limiting CPU speed to 70%, lowering brightness by 10%, disabling 5G, and limiting apps and the Home screen. Treat that list as an example of what a power-saving menu can contain, not as a fixed set of S21 toggles in 2026.
Power saving mode can also limit location and background data. Before you rely on it for a long day, check that navigation, alarms, and any apps you need during the day still behave correctly.
Other factors that drive drain
Samsung’s battery optimization guidance, which is based on Android 13, identifies several everyday causes beyond app settings. These are often where the biggest unexplained drain comes from:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Weak or overlapping cellular signal: The phone works harder in poor coverage, so a day in a building with weak reception can use more battery than the same day on a strong connection.
- Bright ambient light: Outdoor brightness raises screen power demand.
- High-resolution streaming: Video at higher quality uses more power. Lowering streaming quality is a direct change if you watch a lot on mobile data.
- Long screen-on time: The biggest factor is usually simply how long the screen is on.
- Location and other allowed services: Location access for apps that do not need it is worth reviewing in the battery usage list.
Charging faster is a separate question
A compatible adapter can make topping up quicker, which is useful when you cannot wait for an overnight charge. It does not change how long a full charge lasts.
Samsung’s S21 Series charging guidance says the charging adapter is not included in the box and recommends approved wired or wireless charging equipment. For Super Fast Charging, activate the setting under Settings > Battery > More battery settings, and use a charger that supports USB Power Delivery (PD) 3.0. Samsung describes Samsung-branded Super Fast Charging adapters as 25 W or 45 W. Third-party fast chargers may not be compatible. Because adapter support can vary by region and by S21 variant, check the charger’s specification against your phone before buying.
When settings do not explain the drain
If the phone still drains quickly after a full charge, or shuts down unexpectedly even with a reasonable charge level, the battery may be aging. Samsung lists rapid drain after charging and unexpected shutdowns as common signs of battery aging.
Samsung’s support guidance describes the battery this way: “The battery in your Galaxy device is a consumable component that naturally degrades over time.” Settings cannot reverse that wear.
- Restart the phone and confirm it is running the latest available software through the usual update settings.
- Open Samsung Members > Support > Get Started > Battery status and review the result.
- If the symptoms continue, contact Samsung Support or take the phone to a Samsung service center. Replacement may be covered or paid, depending on your warranty terms and where you live. Samsung’s guidance does not give a repair price, so confirm costs with the service provider before booking.
What to expect
None of Samsung’s battery guidance gives a controlled figure for how many extra hours these steps add to a Galaxy S21. Results depend on your apps, signal, screen habits, and battery age, so judge the changes by how the battery usage list and your day actually look after a few days.
