Matthew Knies made an immediate impact in his Columbus debut, scoring twice and adding an assist as the Blue Jackets opened the 2026-27 season with a 6-3 win over the Buffalo Sabres at Nationwide Arena on Thursday, October 1, 2026.
How Columbus took control
Buffalo struck first, but Columbus turned the game around with three goals in a 5:53 stretch late in the opening period, moving from a 1-0 deficit to a 3-1 lead. The Sabres’ goals came from Mattias Samuelsson, Jack Quinn and Konsta Helenius.
Knies began his scoring in that first-period surge. At 17:58, he converted a Charlie Coyle pass with a power-play one-timer from the slot to put Columbus ahead 2-1. Knies had arrived from Toronto earlier in the week, in a six-player trade that sent Kirill Marchenko to Toronto.
Knies adds another after a key penalty kill
Buffalo had a two-man advantage in the second period, but Columbus killed it. At 7:45, Knies scored again to make it 4-2. His two goals and one assist gave him three points in his first game with the Blue Jackets.
