The right tool depends on where suspicious activity occurs. Intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDPS) monitor networks, hosts, wireless traffic, or network behavior; endpoint detection and response (EDR) focuses on activity on devices; firewalls control network connections; and web application firewalls (WAFs) inspect requests to web applications. Some tools alert or log, while others can also block or contain activity.

Choose a tool based on what you need to monitor

Start by identifying the assets and activity you need to see. A tool cannot reliably protect what it does not monitor, and the term “suspicious activity” can refer to very different events: an unusual network connection, malicious behavior on a computer, an unauthorized wireless device, or a hostile request to a website.

Tool category What it monitors Typical role
Network-based IDPS Network traffic at a monitored point Detects or attempts to prevent suspicious network activity.
Wireless IDPS Wireless network activity Looks for suspicious or unauthorized wireless activity.
Network behavior analysis Patterns in network traffic or behavior Identifies activity that appears abnormal compared with expected behavior.
Host-based IDPS Events on an individual host or device Detects or attempts to prevent suspicious activity on that host.
EDR Endpoint telemetry and alerts Helps security teams investigate activity and take response actions.
Firewall or network protection Connections or traffic passing through a network or host control Allows or blocks traffic according to configured rules or protections.
WAF traffic detections Requests sent to a web application Classifies application-layer traffic for analysis or use in rules.

NIST SP 800-94 describes four IDPS classes: network-based, wireless, network behavior analysis, and host-based. It also discusses SIEM as a complementary technology for bringing security information together. Its guidance was published in 2007; NIST says the later Revision 1 draft was retired and never finalized. See NIST SP 800-94.

Detection and blocking are different capabilities

A detection can produce an alert or log entry without stopping the activity. Prevention requires an enabled response mechanism and a configuration that permits action. NIST describes IDPS as identifying possible incidents, logging information, attempting to stop incidents, and reporting them; the actual capability depends on the system and its deployment.

For example, Microsoft documents audit and block modes for its Network Protection feature. Audit mode records activity for review without blocking it, while block mode can prevent covered connections. This is a Microsoft-specific example, not a description of every firewall or network protection product. Its documentation also notes technical conditions affecting inspection of HTTPS connections in some non-Edge processes, so do not assume every encrypted connection is inspected identically. See Microsoft’s Network Protection documentation.

What each option can and cannot tell you

IDPS: monitor a defined network, wireless, or host environment

Choose an IDPS category according to where the relevant activity is visible. A network-based system observes traffic at its deployment point; a host-based system observes activity on covered devices. Wireless IDPS and network behavior analysis focus on their respective environments. Coverage is bounded by placement, configuration, and the events the system can observe.

NIST also describes firewalls and routers as tools that can filter traffic and log blocked connections. That supports considering a firewall router as a network control, but does not establish that every consumer router includes intrusion detection or prevention. Check the specific model’s official specifications rather than assuming an IDPS feature.

EDR: investigate and respond to endpoint activity

EDR collects endpoint telemetry and raises alerts that support investigation and response. Microsoft’s Defender for Endpoint documentation is one vendor-specific example: it describes response actions that vary by plan, including scanning, isolating a device, stopping and quarantining a file, and blocking or allowing a file indicator. Verify current plan availability and exact actions in Microsoft’s EDR overview and its response-action documentation.

EDR is not necessarily a complete activity log. Microsoft says Defender for Endpoint detection is not intended to record every operation or activity on an endpoint. Use appropriate logging and monitoring alongside it when you need a fuller audit trail; do not treat the presence of EDR as proof that every action will be visible.

Firewalls: control connections at a network boundary or on a device

A firewall is useful when the primary goal is to allow or deny connections according to policy. Network firewalls and routers operate on traffic they handle; host firewalls control traffic at the individual device. Their logs can help explain which connections were blocked, but filtering alone does not mean the firewall provides broad endpoint investigation or application-specific detection.

WAF detections: examine requests to an application

A WAF is relevant when suspicious activity targets a website or web application. Cloudflare documents traffic detections that classify incoming requests and can be examined in Security Analytics or used in rule expressions. This is an example of one provider’s application-layer feature, not a universal capability of every WAF. See Cloudflare’s traffic detections documentation, updated September 8, 2026.

How to select and configure a tool

  1. Map the assets and events. Decide whether you need visibility into network traffic, wireless activity, endpoint behavior, application requests, or several layers. Note which devices, services, and network segments must be covered.
  2. Decide whether you need alerts, prevention, or both. Confirm the specific product and plan can take the action you need. A detection-only setting may report suspicious activity without blocking it.
  3. Check coverage and compatibility. Confirm deployment locations, supported operating systems or network environments, and any plan limits. For encrypted traffic, check the product’s documented inspection behavior instead of assuming all traffic is equally visible.
  4. Begin with a reviewable configuration where available. Use an audit or monitoring mode to understand what would be detected and identify false positives before enabling blocking, if the product supports that approach.
  5. Plan how alerts will be investigated. Decide who reviews events, what supporting logs they need, and how they will distinguish a genuine threat from expected but unusual activity.
  6. Enable and validate response actions carefully. Apply blocking or containment only after checking the relevant rules and operational impact. Confirm that the expected events and response records are available for review.
  7. Reassess coverage and maintenance. Review alerts, rule changes, software and threat updates, compatibility, and subscription or plan changes over time.

Use multiple monitoring layers for a fuller investigation

When activity appears abnormal, checking only one source can leave important context missing. CISA recommends investigating abnormal activity with network monitoring and host-based logs and monitoring tools such as EDR. In its January 11, 2022 alert about Russian state-sponsored threats to U.S. critical infrastructure, CISA discusses using these layers to help identify lateral connections. That guidance is specific to the stated critical-infrastructure context, rather than a product endorsement or a universal incident-response prescription. See CISA’s alert.

For a practical comparison, evaluate each candidate on the assets and events it covers, whether it alerts or can prevent activity, how it handles false positives, what logs it retains, how alerts are investigated, the effort required to deploy and maintain it, and any compatibility or plan constraints. The cited sources do not establish an independent current benchmark that ranks these categories or vendors against one another.
