CVE-2024-23832 was a critical Mastodon server vulnerability, but the project’s advisory does not say hackers could take over every account across the decentralized network. It says an attacker could impersonate remote ActivityPub actors and overwrite remote objects as seen by a vulnerable Mastodon server. The fix is to run a patched Mastodon release.

What CVE-2024-23832 allowed

Mastodon disclosed the flaw on February 1, 2024. A gap in validation of federated content meant that, in some code paths, Mastodon trusted an ActivityPub object’s id property instead of correctly checking it against the URL that had been queried. An attacker could exploit that behavior with a crafted payload to impersonate a remote ActivityPub actor from the perspective of an affected server. Mastodon’s security advisory describes the issue and affected releases.

The advisory says the flaw could also let an attacker overwrite existing remote objects, including protocol details. That could make it possible to intercept further traffic between a vulnerable Mastodon server and an impersonated remote actor. The impact described is tied to how the vulnerable server sees and handles federated content; it is not evidence that every account on every service in the fediverse was globally compromised.

Which Mastodon releases were affected

The following thresholds come from Mastodon’s February 1, 2024 advisory. They are historical patch levels, not a statement of the latest releases today.

Release branch Affected versions listed by Mastodon Patched version listed
3.5.x and earlier Every version before 3.5.17 3.5.17
4.0.x Versions before 4.0.13 4.0.13
4.1.x Versions before 4.1.13 4.1.13
4.2.x Versions before 4.2.5 4.2.5

Operators should compare their installed version with the advisory and upgrade to a patched release using the appropriate supported upgrade path. The advisory does not establish whether any particular instance is still vulnerable now, so check the instance’s actual software version rather than inferring its status from the old thresholds.

How severe was the vulnerability?

Mastodon classified CVE-2024-23832 as Critical and assigned it a CVSS 3.1 score of 9.4 out of 10. The project’s vector was AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:L/I:H/A:H. The score and severity are Mastodon’s assessment in its 2024 advisory.

The advisory was published by Mastodon maintainer Gargron and credits arcanicanis as the reporter. The reviewed sources do not establish a count of affected users, confirmed in-the-wild exploitation, or the current status of individual servers.

What Mastodon users should do

This was a flaw in server-side handling of federated ActivityPub content, so the direct remediation is updating Mastodon—not changing a personal password or buying a security product.

  • If you operate an instance: check its installed Mastodon version and follow the project’s upgrade guidance to reach a patched, supported release.
  • If you use someone else’s instance: ask the administrator whether the server is running a patched release. A user generally cannot apply the server update themselves.

A report published by The Hacker News on February 3, 2024 used the broader “hijack any decentralized account” framing. Read that phrase in light of the technical scope in the Mastodon advisory: remote actors could be impersonated as observed from a vulnerable Mastodon server, with possible overwriting of remote objects. Neither source establishes that every account across decentralized services was taken over.
