To switch Samsung accounts on a Galaxy phone, sign out of and remove the current Samsung account, then add the replacement account. There is no separate one-tap account-switch button. Removing the account from the phone does not delete it permanently, but synchronized data may be removed locally, so verify important data first.
The menu names below apply to recent Galaxy phones and tablets, including current One UI versions. Samsung notes that screens can differ by model, carrier, region, and software version, so an older device may show a slightly different route.
Key takeaways
- Samsung accounts cannot be merged, so the replacement account will not automatically inherit the old account’s purchases, history, backups, or cloud data.
- The usual Galaxy path is Settings → Accounts and backup → Manage accounts → Samsung account → Remove account, followed by password verification.
- Removing a Samsung account from a phone is different from permanently deleting the Samsung account.
- Signing out can remove synchronized contacts, events, and other account-linked information from the device without deleting the account’s data from Samsung’s services.
- Switching Samsung accounts does not change the phone’s Google account, Google Play account, or Google device-protection state.
What does “switch Samsung accounts” actually mean?
Switching Samsung accounts means disconnecting one Samsung account from the Galaxy device and signing in with another account. Samsung does not provide a separate “switch account” button for the phone’s primary Samsung account; the practical process is to remove or sign out of the existing account and then add the replacement account.
These three actions are different:
| Action | What it does | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Remove or sign out on the phone | Disconnects the Samsung account from that individual Galaxy phone or tablet. The account remains available and can generally be added again later. | Changing the account used on one device, preparing a phone for another user, or troubleshooting synchronization. |
| Sign out of Samsung.com in a browser | Ends the browser session. Browser sign-out does not necessarily remove the Samsung account from the Galaxy device. | Protecting a web session on a shared or public computer. |
| Delete the Samsung account | Permanently closes the account and may remove associated data, services, usage history, downloads, and purchase history. Deletion is irreversible according to Samsung’s regional account-deletion guidance. | Only when you intentionally want to abandon the account after reviewing its data and services. |
For a normal account change, choose remove/sign out, not account deletion. Samsung’s Galaxy account-removal instructions distinguish removing an account from a device from deleting the account itself.

What should you check before removing the old Samsung account?
Before signing out, identify information and services that depend on the old Samsung account. Samsung account features can include Galaxy Store, Samsung Pay, Bixby, SmartThings Find, Samsung Cloud-related synchronization, Samsung Pass, Samsung Health, Gallery synchronization, contacts, calendars, notes, and other services. Availability and behavior vary by country, device, software version, and service, so do not assume that every Samsung service stores or restores data in the same way.
Use this pre-switch checklist
- Confirm the old account ID and password. The phone may require the old account password before sign-out completes.
- Check two-step verification. Make sure you can access the registered phone number, email, or configured authenticator app.
- Review important data. Check Samsung Cloud-related content, Samsung Pass credentials, Samsung Health information, Gallery synchronization, contacts, calendars, notes, SmartThings devices, and Find My Mobile or SmartThings Find settings as applicable to your device.
- Export or sync anything you still need. Do not rely on a new Samsung account to receive the old account’s content automatically.
- Review purchases and subscriptions. Galaxy Store purchases and account history remain associated with the old Samsung account rather than moving to the new account.
- Decide whether you actually need a new account. If you only changed your email address, name, language, or other profile details, updating the existing account may preserve more continuity than creating a second account.
Samsung’s Galaxy device documentation warns that information such as contacts or events may be removed from the device during sign-out. That warning concerns local device availability; it does not mean that signing out automatically deletes all information stored in the old Samsung account. Read Samsung’s Galaxy device documentation on signing out and local data before proceeding if the data is important.
How do you remove the current Samsung account from a Galaxy phone?
On current Galaxy software, the usual Samsung account switch path is Settings → Accounts and backup → Manage accounts → Samsung account → Remove account. Follow these steps:
PC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Open the phone’s main Settings app.
- Tap Accounts and backup.
- Tap Manage accounts.
- Select the existing Samsung account. Tap the account entry itself, not merely a Samsung app.
- Tap Remove account.
- Tap Remove account again when the confirmation prompt appears.
- Tap Sign out.
- Enter the old Samsung account password when requested.
- Tap OK, or use the equivalent confirmation control shown on your device.
Samsung’s current U.S. support route for removing an account from a Galaxy phone or tablet uses these labels, but Samsung manuals and other software versions may place the control elsewhere.
What if your phone shows “My profile” instead?
Some Galaxy devices show an alternate route: open Settings → Accounts and backup → Manage accounts → Samsung account → My profile → Sign out. The wording is different, but the result is the same: the old Samsung account is disconnected from the device after you complete identity verification.
Do not confuse the phone’s Settings account entry with a sign-out option inside Samsung Internet, Samsung Members, Galaxy Store, or another individual app. An app-level sign-out may affect only that app and may not remove the primary Samsung account from the phone.
How do you add the replacement Samsung account?
After the old account is removed, sign in to the replacement Samsung account through the prompt at the top of Settings or through the account-management menu.

- Open Settings.
- Tap Sign in to your Galaxy if that option appears at the top.
- If the option does not appear, tap Accounts and backup → Manage accounts → Add account → Samsung account.
- Enter the replacement account’s email address or Samsung account ID and password.
- Accept any requested terms or permissions.
- Complete two-step verification if Samsung requests it.
- Review the synchronization and Samsung service options before enabling them.
Samsung supports two-step verification through more than SMS alone. Depending on the account configuration, verification may involve a registered phone number, email, or a compatible authenticator app. Samsung’s Samsung account FAQ and verification guidance lists compatible authenticator options and recovery controls.
After signing in, open the Samsung services you use and review their account and synchronization settings individually. A new Samsung account should be treated as a separate identity rather than as a continuation of the old account.
What changes after switching Samsung accounts?
Removing the old Samsung account disconnects that account from the phone, but it does not transfer the old account’s information to the new account or erase the entire phone.
| Item | Expected result |
|---|---|
| Old Samsung account on the device | Removed or signed out after the password or other identity check succeeds. |
| Old Samsung account itself | Remains active unless you separately delete it. |
| Old account’s cloud data | Not automatically transferred to the replacement account. |
| Samsung purchases and account history | Remain tied to the old Samsung account; Samsung accounts cannot be merged. |
| Contacts, calendar events, or other synchronized information | May disappear from the device after sign-out if they were supplied by the old account’s synchronization. |
| Photos, notes, Samsung Pass data, Health data, and service content | Require service-specific checking or export; do not assume that signing in with the new account restores them. |
| Google account and Google Play account | Unchanged. Samsung account switching does not switch Google accounts. |
| Replacement Samsung account | Must be configured separately, including synchronization, services, devices, and verification. |
Samsung states that each Samsung account is managed independently and that accounts cannot be merged. The Samsung account FAQ is the relevant reference for account separation, supported services, and account recovery.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Does switching Samsung accounts erase the phone?
No. Removing a Samsung account is not the same as performing a factory reset, and account removal alone does not erase the entire Galaxy phone.
However, account-linked data can become unavailable on the device after sign-out. For example, contacts or calendar events synchronized through the old Samsung account may be removed from the phone’s local view. Information that remains in the old account is not automatically copied into the new account.
If you are keeping the phone, verify the old account’s data before removing it and restore or export anything you need. If you are selling or transferring the phone, account removal is only one part of the preparation:

Samsung provides separate information about registering a Galaxy product with a Samsung account. Device registration and account removal are related but are not necessarily the same action.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What should you do if you forgot the old Samsung account password?
If the phone requires the old password, use Samsung account recovery rather than trying to bypass the verification screen. On the Samsung sign-in or recovery screen, choose Forgot ID or Forgot password, then follow the prompts.
- Confirm the Samsung account email address or ID if necessary.
- Verify access to the recovery email address or phone number.
- Complete the requested identity checks.
- Use the configured authenticator app if Samsung presents that option.
- Return to the phone’s Settings and retry the account-removal process after recovering access.
If recovery cannot be completed, contact Samsung Support or use the Samsung Members app. Samsung’s account recovery and two-step-verification information is safer and more appropriate than factory-resetting the phone to evade authentication.
What if Samsung two-step verification does not work?
If two-step verification fails, the problem is usually access to the configured verification method rather than the account-switch menu itself. Common cases include a missing phone number, a code that does not arrive, lost access to an authenticator app, or an automatic verification failure.
- No access to the registered number: Use Samsung’s account-recovery or phone-number-reset guidance instead of repeatedly requesting codes.
- The code does not arrive: Check the registered number, network service, email inbox, and any available alternate verification method.
- Authenticator access was lost: Use Samsung’s recovery process or contact Samsung Support; do not assume that reinstalling an authenticator app will restore the old account configuration.
- Automatic verification fails: Samsung says automatic verification may use the phone’s SIM or network number. Return to the previous screen and enter a verification code manually when that option is available.
Samsung supports compatible authenticator apps, including Microsoft Authenticator and authenticator apps available through the Galaxy Store, but the available options depend on the account’s configuration. See Samsung’s two-step-verification guidance for the current recovery choices.
What if “Remove account” is missing?
If Remove account is not visible, the phone may be using a different Settings layout, an older software path, or a restriction that prevents account changes.
- Open the main Settings app and search for Samsung account.
- Try Settings → Accounts and backup → Manage accounts.
- Tap the Samsung account entry itself rather than opening an individual Samsung service.
- Check for available system and One UI updates.
- Restart the phone and repeat the search.
- On older Galaxy software, look for a legacy path such as Cloud and accounts → Accounts.
- If the phone is managed by an employer, school, family organizer, or other administrator, ask the administrator whether account changes are restricted.
- Contact Samsung Support if the device remains associated with a previous owner or the account control is still unavailable.
Samsung explicitly cautions that account screens can vary by carrier and software version. The Samsung account-removal support page is the best starting point for region-specific instructions.

What should you do with a used Galaxy phone linked to someone else?
If a used Galaxy phone asks for the previous owner’s Samsung account credentials, do not attempt to bypass the prompt. The previous owner must properly sign out of the phone and may also need to remove or unregister the device from their Samsung account.
Ask the seller or previous owner to complete these actions:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Sign in to the phone with their Samsung account.
- Remove the Samsung account through the phone’s Settings.
- Check their Samsung account device list and remove or unregister the phone if it remains listed.
- Perform the appropriate factory-reset and handover process before giving the phone back to you.
If the seller cannot remove the account, return the phone or request a refund. Contact Samsung with proof of purchase if you need assistance. An account prompt on a second-hand phone is an ownership and authentication issue, not a setting that should be circumvented.
Does changing the Samsung account change the Google account?
No. Samsung and Google accounts are separate accounts. Switching the Samsung account does not replace the Google account used for Gmail, Google Play, Google Drive, Android synchronization, or Google device protection.
Do not remove the Google account merely because you are changing the Samsung account. Remove the Google account only if you specifically intend to change or clear the Google identity on the phone, particularly before transferring ownership. Samsung provides separate Google-account removal guidance and notes that identity verification may be required when device-protection features are enabled.
Can two Samsung accounts be used on one phone?
A Galaxy phone normally has one primary Samsung account connected to its main Samsung services, although separate Samsung apps or services may offer their own account controls. A second Samsung account is not a way to merge identities, combine purchases, or make the phone’s primary account share all data automatically.
Samsung Family groups can include multiple Samsung account IDs, but each participant keeps a separate account. Samsung’s Family groups and parental-controls guidance describes family participation as a group feature, not as account merging or a replacement for switching the phone’s primary Samsung account.

Should you remove the account, update its profile, or delete it?
The right choice depends on whether the problem is the phone assignment, the account’s profile information, or the account itself.
| Your situation | Best action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You want another Samsung account on one phone. | Remove/sign out, then add the replacement account. | Changes the account connected to the device without destroying the old account. |
| You changed your email address, name, language, or similar profile details. | Update the existing account profile. | Preserves the existing account’s purchases, history, and service relationships where Samsung allows the change. |
| You want to preserve old Samsung purchases, backups, or service history. | Keep the existing account. | A new account will not automatically inherit the old account’s data, and Samsung accounts cannot be merged. |
| You are permanently abandoning the Samsung account. | Consider account deletion only after a full review. | Deletion is separate from device removal and can permanently remove account data, purchases, and services. |
| You are changing the phone’s owner. | Transfer data, remove Samsung and Google accounts, then factory-reset. | Signing out of Samsung alone is not a complete resale wipe. |
Samsung’s account-deletion guidance explains that permanent deletion is a separate, irreversible action. Review the Samsung account deletion information for the applicable regional policy before choosing deletion.
Final Samsung account switching checklist
- Important contacts, events, photos, notes, credentials, health information, and other needed data have been checked or exported.
- The old Samsung account password and two-step-verification method are available.
- The old Samsung account has been removed from the phone through Settings.
- The replacement Samsung account has been added and verified.
- Samsung synchronization and individual services have been reviewed under the new account.
- Samsung purchases and history have been left with the old account if applicable; they have not been assumed to transfer.
- The Google account has been checked separately.
- For a transferred phone, Samsung and Google accounts have been removed before the factory reset.
- A used phone that still requests the previous owner’s credentials has been returned to the seller or handled through Samsung Support rather than bypassed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will removing a Samsung account from my phone delete the account?
No. Removing a Samsung account from a Galaxy phone disconnects the account from that device; it does not normally delete the Samsung account. Permanent account deletion is a separate and irreversible process.
Can I transfer Samsung Cloud data and Galaxy Store purchases to a new Samsung account?
Not automatically. Samsung accounts are separate and cannot be merged, so data, purchases, and account history remain associated with the old account unless a particular service provides its own supported transfer or export process.
Does switching Samsung accounts remove my Google account?
No. Samsung and Google accounts are separate. Changing the Samsung account does not change the Google Play account, Gmail account, or Google device-protection state on the phone.
What should I do if a used Galaxy phone asks for the previous owner’s Samsung account password?
Ask the previous owner to sign out properly and remove or unregister the device from their Samsung account. Do not attempt to bypass the prompt; return the phone to the seller or contact Samsung with proof of purchase if the previous owner cannot resolve it.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: To switch Samsung accounts on a Galaxy phone, remove or sign out of the old account in Settings, complete the password and verification checks, and then sign in with the replacement account. Do not delete the old Samsung account unless permanent deletion is intentional, and verify synchronized data first because a new account will not inherit the old account’s content or purchases.
