Reddit’s Mod Tools hub brings together the built-in controls moderators use to review content, manage a team, communicate with users, apply rules, and assess moderation activity. A reliable workflow is to set permissions and community rules first, review queues with context, use manual and automated actions appropriately, then check Insights and the Mod Log for patterns. The exact interface varies across reddit.com, the mobile apps, and Old Reddit; use Reddit’s Moderation Tools overview to find current platform guidance.

What Reddit moderation tools are available?

Start from the community’s Mod Tools hub. Reddit’s overview lists controls for queues, Mod Mail, scheduled posts and events, restricted users, moderator and approved-user management, rules, saved responses, Insights, the Mod Log, Automoderator, safety filters, automations, and content settings. Not every control appears or works identically on every interface; Reddit notes that some tools or actions may require reddit.com rather than Old Reddit.

For interface-level moderation while browsing a community, Reddit also documents Mod Mode. Treat the overview as the map, then follow the dedicated help page for the particular tool and platform.

How should moderators set up their team and rules?

Assign permissions deliberately

Moderator permissions determine which parts of the work a teammate can access or perform. Reddit’s moderator permissions guide describes permission areas and cautions moderators to understand the actions each permission enables. Apply least privilege: give each moderator the access required for their responsibilities, and revisit it when those responsibilities change. This is especially important for permissions that allow content actions or access to private community information. Confirm any prerequisites before granting Automoderator-related access.

Make rules usable in review

Community rules are the standard moderators apply when deciding what to approve, remove, or escalate. Keep them clear enough that moderators can connect a queue item to a rule rather than rely on report volume alone. Reddit includes rules and content controls in Mod Tools; consult the current overview for their platform-specific locations.

How do you use Reddit’s moderation queue?

The queue is more than a reported-content inbox. Reddit documents five views: Needs Review, Reported, Removed, Edited, and Unmoderated. Needs Review brings together content needing attention, including user-reported items and posts or comments caught by filters. The Moderation Queue guide explains the views and platform-specific steps.

  1. Open the community’s Mod Tools and choose the moderation queue. If the control is missing or a step differs, check Reddit’s platform instructions for your interface.
  2. Select the view that matches the content state: for example, Needs Review for items awaiting a decision, Reported for reported content, or Removed to inspect removals.
  3. Open the item’s context. Reddit’s contextual panel shows the original content and discussion; use it to understand how the item fits the conversation.
  4. Review the relevant community rule and available moderation context before acting. A high report count alone does not establish that content violates a rule.
  5. Take the appropriate action using the controls available for that item, and use the user panel when more context or a user-level action is needed.

The user-profile panel can provide moderation context and actions such as adding a mod note, sending Mod Mail, or banning, muting, or reporting a user. Choose the action that addresses the specific issue; a content decision and a user-level action are not the same thing.

When should you use Mod Mail, saved responses, and user-management tools?

Use Mod Mail for moderator-to-user communication, particularly when a decision needs an explanation or more information. Saved responses help the team answer recurring situations consistently; they are reusable text, not a substitute for checking that a response fits the individual case. Both are included in Reddit’s Mod Tools overview.

User-management tools cover moderators, approved users, and restricted users. Use the relevant management area for the access or status you intend to change, and confirm the current permission and interface requirements before making a change. Keep messages factual and tied to the community’s rules, and avoid promising an outcome that moderators have not decided.

What should Automoderator handle?

Automoderator is Reddit’s configurable, rule-based tool for repetitive moderation tasks. Its documented uses include sending Mod Mail alerts, replying with helpful information, highlighting comments, removing or flairing posts based on a domain or keyword, filtering content, and identifying possible spam or low-quality contributors. Rules are configured on the community wiki page config/automoderator. See Reddit’s Automoderator guide for setup and the full documentation for rule behavior and ordering.

Choose the action according to its risk

Automoderator rules can take different actions, so decide whether a condition should trigger an automatic action or flag content for human attention. Filtering for review is a more cautious choice when a rule may catch legitimate posts; automatic removal is appropriate only when the condition is clear and the team is comfortable with that consequence. Test rule logic against the intended cases and review what it catches before relying on it broadly.

Know its limits before designing a rule

Reddit’s documentation says Automoderator does not process old content, delay actions, detect or flag duplicate content, or react to karma, flair changes, or a redditor’s history. It therefore cannot replace retrospective cleanup, a timed-action system, or a human assessment of account history. The Automoderator help page also notes that some enforcement actions may no longer be available in newly created communities or communities where Automoderator has not been used, and points moderators toward Rules and Automation tools in those cases. Because availability can change, check the current help page before building a workflow around a particular action.

How do safety filters and other automation fit in?

Reddit’s Mod Tools overview includes safety filters and automations alongside Automoderator. These are separate controls in the broader moderation workflow; do not assume that every filtered item was produced by an Automoderator rule. Review items surfaced by filters through the appropriate queue, use context to decide what to do, and consult the current tool-specific help guidance before changing a filter or automation. When the cost of a false positive is high, prefer a workflow that sends content for human review rather than silently taking an irreversible action.

How can Mod Insights and the Mod Log help?

Use Insights to look for operational patterns

Mod Insights has three areas. Activity covers traffic and membership growth; Team Health covers fellow moderators’ activity; Reports and Removals shows reported and removed content, including content handled by safety tools or admins. Use these views to frame follow-up questions—for instance, whether a moderation workload is concentrated or whether certain content is repeatedly reaching the team. The figures describe activity and outcomes in the tool; they do not by themselves establish why a trend occurred.

Use the Mod Log to review actions

The Mod Tools overview says the Mod Log lists moderator or admin actions in the community over the last 90 days. Use it to inspect what actions were taken and when, especially when reviewing a decision or coordinating team work. The retention window is the one documented by Reddit’s overview, updated October 6, 2026; check the current page if your workflow depends on a specific history period.

How do you onboard and train new moderators?

Reddit’s Mod Guide and Training Queue are designed to explain expectations, connect new moderators with the team, reinforce community rules, and provide a low-stakes place to practice moderation. Reddit documents availability on reddit.com and the iOS and Android apps. Setting up or editing these tools requires config permissions.

A useful onboarding sequence is to introduce the community’s rules and escalation norms, walk through the queue and communication tools, then let the new moderator practice using the training experience before taking on broader duties. Pair the exercise with clear guidance about which actions the moderator is authorized to take.

How should a team choose the right tool for a moderation task?

Situation Starting point Key consideration
Content is waiting for a decision Needs Review queue Inspect the conversation and apply the relevant community rule.
A user or moderator needs to be contacted Mod Mail and, where suitable, saved responses Personalize reusable text to the actual case.
A recurring, clearly defined condition needs handling Automoderator or another relevant automation Choose between filtering for review and an automatic action based on the risk of a mistaken match.
A teammate needs access to moderation functions Moderator management and permissions Grant only the permissions needed for assigned work.
The team wants to understand activity or review past actions Mod Insights or the Mod Log Insights summarizes activity categories; the log records actions.
A moderator is new to the community Mod Guide and Training Queue Confirm the required config permissions for setup or editing.

Platform is another decision point: desktop, mobile apps, and Old Reddit can expose different steps or availability. Reddit’s overview and the dedicated queue instructions are the authoritative places to resolve interface differences.
