Washington released rookie linebacker Marvin Jones Jr. from its practice squad on October 1, 2026, after reaching an injury settlement, according to CBS Sports. The injury has not been disclosed. CBS Sports says Jones may pass a physical and sign with another team, but the cited reports do not say that he has done so.
What happened to Marvin Jones Jr.?
The Washington Commanders released Jones from their practice squad after reaching an injury settlement, CBS Sports reported on October 1, 2026. A transaction recap published the following day also lists the release with an injury settlement.
Jones had been placed on Washington’s practice-squad injured list earlier in the week. The reports differ on the date: CBS Sports says Tuesday, while the October 2 transaction recap lists September 30. The available reporting does not resolve that discrepancy.

The injury is undisclosed, and the cited reports provide no diagnosis or recovery timetable. CBS Sports says Jones will have an opportunity to pass a physical and sign elsewhere. Neither report identifies a new team or confirms a signing.

Who is Marvin Jones Jr.?
Jones is a linebacker and an undrafted rookie in 2026, according to Heavy. The outlet reports that he played college football at Georgia, Florida State, and Oklahoma. Heavy lists his college production as 16 combined tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks in 25 games at Georgia; four sacks at Florida State; and 21 combined tackles, five tackles for loss, two sacks, and one pass defense in 13 games at Oklahoma.
Heavy also reproduces an assessment by NFL.com draft analyst Lance Zierlein: “He has good size and comes from NFL bloodlines. His play strength and aggression at the point of attack are average, but his hands stay active and he gets off blocks when needed.”
