Marvel Puzzle Quest (MPQ) pairs Marvel character collecting with match-3 role-playing: build a team of three, match tiles to deal damage and generate Action Points (AP), then spend AP on character powers. Its roster includes heroes, villains, original characters, and alternate versions, so a character’s in-game identity and star tier matter as much as the Marvel name.
What makes the Marvel Puzzle Quest roster different?
MPQ is not simply a catalogue of Marvel characters. Each roster entry is a playable version with its own star tier, powers, colors, and AP costs. Familiar characters can appear in multiple incarnations, while the roster also reaches beyond headline heroes: the official game description cites examples including Samurai Wolverine, Peggy Carter as Captain America, Spider-Ham, Devil Dinosaur, and Howard the Duck. The publisher says new characters are added consistently, so the roster changes over time.
The official Marvel Puzzle Quest description says the game has “over 250” Marvel heroes and reports “over 20 million players worldwide.” The page does not date either figure, so treat them as undated publisher claims rather than independently verified current counts.

Matches connect the character roster to the board. Matching three or more tiles deals damage and generates AP in the corresponding color; basic colored tiles are therefore both an attack and a way to charge powers. Characters’ abilities spend AP, and their colors and costs determine how they interact with the resources your team generates. The official Gameplay Tips help center covers these mechanics and other player-facing systems.

Character abilities can fill different tactical roles: dealing damage, healing, stunning or sending an enemy airborne, creating special tiles, changing the board, or generating resources. These descriptions are more useful than assuming a character is universally strong or weak: a power’s value depends on its cost, its effect, and the rest of the team.
How to read a character entry
When you compare two entries in the live roster, focus on the in-game version rather than just the shared Marvel identity. Record the star tier, power colors and AP costs, and what each ability actually changes on the board or for the team. Then consider whether those effects complement the other two characters you plan to use.

- Identity and variant: Check the full in-game name and version label. A variant is a distinct playable entry, not necessarily interchangeable with another version of the same character.
- Star tier: Note the roster’s displayed tier. It is part of the entry’s identity and progression context, not by itself a guarantee of a particular team role or outcome.
- Power color and cost: Each ability uses AP. Color indicates which matching tiles help build that resource; cost tells you what must be accumulated before activating the power.
- Board and team effect: Identify whether an ability deals damage, heals, applies control, creates or converts tiles, or supports resource generation.
- Conditional synergy: Look for a specific interaction between abilities. For example, tile effects may matter more when another teammate benefits from those tiles; that is a mechanical fit, not a permanent “best team” ranking.
The official Heroes roster shows how live entries distinguish characters and powers. For example, it lists Power Man (Víctor Álvarez) as a 5-star character with a Black power costing 10 AP. Because roster content and displayed ability details can change, check the live entry for current values rather than relying on a static list.

Recruiting and developing characters involves several related but distinct systems. Covers represent powers, while Shards can be used toward recruitment, a power upgrade, or a Champion Level. The official Shards FAQ says Shards are available for 3-, 4-, and 5-star heroes, can be redeemed for any of that hero’s three powers, and do not expire. The FAQ also describes Favorites, Covers, and Champions among the game’s progression topics.

Other systems affect how a roster is used or presented rather than changing the basic match loop. The help center includes guidance on Clearance Levels, Powered-Up Levels, Supports, and costumes. These terms are worth keeping separate: a costume concerns a character’s appearance, while a Support is a distinct game system, and a Powered-Up Level or event context can affect how a character appears in play.
Where characters fit into MPQ’s modes
Characters are used across the game’s solo and competitive activities. The official help center describes Story Events as solo PvE battles with story content, and Versus Tournaments as competitive events. The game description also highlights daily quests, alliances, and raid bosses alongside team-building and character collection. A roster choice that suits one event or objective is not automatically the right choice for another.

Why there is no permanent “best character” list
Star tier, power details, balance, event availability, and roster additions can change, while team usefulness depends on the other characters and the match objective. The official materials support comparing mechanics and team interactions, but not declaring a universal current ranking. A more reliable choice is to compare the actual live versions available to you, their costs and effects, and the role your team needs.

Marvel’s historical America Chavez design interview offers an example of a power concept: its search excerpt describes a design focused on storing AP to deal damage. That is a useful illustration of how resource management can shape a character’s identity, but it should not be taken as a current balance assessment.
