The Marshall Kilburn III is a large, heavy Bluetooth speaker built for loud, room-filling stereo sound rather than pocket-sized travel. It is well equipped, with physical controls, a 3.5 mm input and a splash-resistant IP54 rating, but two numbers need careful reading. Marshall advertises more than 50 hours of playtime, while RTINGS measured a little over 23 hours in its own battery test. If sound output matters more to you than weight, the Kilburn III is a strong choice. If you plan to carry it in a bag every day, a lighter model will suit you better.
Who the Kilburn III suits
The Kilburn III makes sense for a patio, a kitchen, a shared living room or a garage workshop, where a speaker stays in one or two places and needs to fill the space with sound. It is a poor fit for commuters or anyone who wants a speaker to fit in a backpack or a jacket pocket. At 2.8 kg (6.17 lb), it is a speaker you lift with both hands and carry by its strap.
Design, size and specifications
Marshall’s styling borrows from its guitar amplifiers, and the top panel carries physical knobs for volume, bass and treble rather than touch-only controls. That matters if you adjust sound often, because you can change it without opening an app. Marshall’s published specifications are below. These are manufacturer figures, not independent measurements.

#1 Best Overall
- 50+ HOURS OF PORTABLE PLAYTIME: Portable playtime for over two days.
- TRUE STEREOPHONIC: 360° sound you can hear wherever you stand.
- DUST & WATER-RESISTANT: IP54 rated, resistant to dust and water splashes.
- DYNAMIC LOUDNESS: Perfect audio at every volume.
- TACTILE CONTROLS: Intuitive controls in Marshall’s signature style.
Sound quality and loudness
The Kilburn III pairs one 4-inch woofer with two 2-inch full-range drivers, and Marshall gives the woofer its own 30 W amplifier. That split is the core of its sound: the woofer handles low frequencies, and the full-range pair carries the stereo image. Marshall rates the maximum output at 91 dB SPL at 1 metre. That is a manufacturer figure, and it describes capacity rather than how the speaker will sound in your room.
Marshall positions the Kilburn III as a redesign of its acoustic approach rather than a refresh. Its launch announcement, dated May 27, 2025, said the speaker went on sale globally on Marshall.com that day and would reach retailers from June 10, 2025. Hanna Wallner, Product Manager Marshall Speakers, described the change this way: “Kilburn III represents a groundbreaking evolution in our product line, showcasing a completely reengineered acoustic design. We’ve enhanced its visual appeal, refined usability, and extended the playtime to over 50 hours. The Kilburn III is a remarkable upgrade from the highly appreciated Kilburn II.”
Battery life: the claim and the measured result
Marshall’s current product page claims more than 50 hours of portable playtime. The launch material does not spell out the volume level or content behind that figure, so treat it as a headline number rather than a benchmark you can reproduce at home. RTINGS’ battery test, updated July 13, 2026, measured a little over 23 hours under its own methodology and conditions.

| Source | Figure | What it represents |
|---|---|---|
| Marshall, current product page (accessed 2026) | 50+ hours | Manufacturer claim for portable playtime |
| RTINGS battery test (review updated July 13, 2026) | A little over 23 hours | Measured result under RTINGS’ test conditions |
The gap between these numbers is large, and your own result will depend on volume, content and how often you use the speaker. Plan for a runtime closer to the measured figure than the advertised one, and treat either number as a reference point rather than a promise.
Charging and using it as a power bank
The Kilburn III charges over USB-C, and Marshall also describes using it to charge another device. Marshall’s specified figures are these: a 20-minute charge can give eight hours of playtime when using a 30 W USB-C PD charger, and a full recharge takes three hours under its stated conditions. The speaker’s USB-C input is listed at 5 V/3 A or 9 V/3 A, and Marshall’s charging instructions recommend a 15 to 27 W supply.

- Make sure the speaker is completely dry before you connect anything.
- Switch the speaker on. It will not charge another device while it is off.
- Confirm the speaker’s battery is above 20%.
- Connect your device with a separate cable that suits it. The speaker does not include one for this purpose.
Outdoor use and what IP54 means
IP54 is the Kilburn III’s main protection rating. Under the standard, it offers limited protection against dust and protection against water splashes. Marshall does not describe the speaker as suitable for immersion, so the Kilburn III is not waterproof. It is reasonable to use on a covered patio, near a sink or during light rain, but keep it out of pools, sinks you fill, or any place where it could be submerged or hosed down.

Marshall lists Bluetooth 5.3 with Auracast, plus Bluetooth multipoint, so you can keep two sources connected at once. Supported codecs are SBC, LC3 and MPEG-2 AAC. Marshall states a Bluetooth range of 10 m. For wired use, there is a 3.5 mm AUX input. The speaker has no microphones, so it is not designed for speakerphone calls.
Playback does not require the Marshall Bluetooth app. Marshall recommends installing it for firmware updates and for the overall product experience.

The Kilburn III earns its price if you want loud, full stereo sound, physical controls, USB-C charging with a power-bank function, and a speaker you keep in one place. It is the wrong choice if portability is a priority, since RTINGS judged the Emberton II the easier speaker to carry. It is also not the right pick if you need a waterproof speaker or the 50-hour runtime Marshall advertises for a daily all-day use case.
Materials, sustainability and repairs
Marshall states that 84% of the plastic in the main unit is recycled and that the product is PVC-free. These are manufacturer claims, and we have not seen third-party lifecycle verification for them.
Marshall advertises authorised repairs and spare parts for the Kilburn III. Eligibility varies by market, so if service matters to your decision, check your local Marshall support page before you buy.
