Choose Marrow if you want an MCP server to run on your iPhone and your AI client can reach that phone over the local network. Choose MetricBridge if you prefer a local server that reads Apple Health data exported to JSON files. The key difference is where the agent must be able to reach your data—not simply that both options are described as local.
How the two Apple Health MCP options work
Both products aim to make Apple Health data available to AI tools, but they use different paths. Marrow serves data from the iPhone, with an optional self-hosted mirror for access when the phone is away. MetricBridge’s health-export-mcp server reads JSON files created by its companion app and communicates with a client over stdio.
| Question | Marrow | MetricBridge |
|---|---|---|
| Where does MCP run? | On the iPhone over the local network; an optional self-hosted mirror is also documented. | On a local computer, reading exported JSON files and communicating over stdio. |
| What must the AI client be able to reach? | The phone’s network endpoint, or the mirror endpoint if you use that option. | The computer running the server and the exported files it reads. |
| Does the architecture require buying additional hardware? | Not for the on-phone option. The vendor lists a Pi, NAS, or old laptop as possible mirror hosts. | The project describes a local server, but its documentation does not establish whether you need new hardware. |
| What setup detail matters most? | Whether the client can reach the phone on your network, and whether you need a mirror when the phone is away. | Whether the server can access the export destination and how often the app refreshes the files. |
When Marrow’s on-phone server is the better fit
Marrow’s product page describes a free iPhone app requiring iOS 17 or later and access to Apple Health. Its setup guide says you enable the on-phone server yourself; the server is read-only, uses bearer-token authentication, and binds to the local network. Marrow says this option requires neither a Marrow account nor a hosted API. See the Marrow product page and Marrow setup documentation.

When MetricBridge’s local server is the better fit
MetricBridge’s health-export-mcp project describes a read-only local server with no external package dependencies. The companion app exports Apple Health data to JSON files in a location you select; the server reads those files and exposes tools over stdio. The project documentation states coverage of 190 Apple Health metrics, a vendor-stated count rather than an independent assessment of accuracy or usefulness. See the health-export-mcp project documentation.
This architecture may suit a client already running on the computer that holds the server and files. Before relying on it, confirm that the server can read the export location and check how frequently the app refreshes the files. The available project description does not establish that refresh schedule.

Do you need a Marrow mirror?
The mirror is optional. Marrow documents running it on a Pi, NAS, or old laptop so you can access data when the phone is away. The vendor recommends using a LAN or tailnet and warns against forwarding the server’s port to the open internet. Read the Marrow mirror documentation before configuring remote access; do not assume the mirror is necessary for ordinary on-phone use.
Cost and coverage claims to verify
Marrow describes its core app and MCP access as free, with an optional Pro tier. Its product page lists 178 data series; that is a vendor-stated coverage figure, not an independent quality measure. MetricBridge’s App Store listing describes a seven-day free trial followed by a one-time purchase that unlocks export, on-device Ask, and Weekly Brief. Price and storefront terms can vary or change, so check the live listing for your region. The listing’s trial and purchase details were retrieved on 2026-10-07; see the MetricBridge App Store listing.

A practical way to choose
- Locate the MCP client. If it can reach the iPhone over your intended local network, Marrow’s on-phone option is direct. If it will run beside the exported files, MetricBridge’s file-based server may fit better.
- Decide whether access must continue when the phone is away. If yes, consider Marrow’s optional mirror and its LAN or tailnet guidance.
- Check data freshness needs. With MetricBridge, verify the export destination and refresh behavior in the app’s current documentation. With either option, confirm that your client can reach the relevant endpoint or files.
- Review current setup and commercial terms. App requirements, supported clients, feature counts, trials, and prices may change; consult the linked product and project pages before installing.
What the available evidence does—and does not—show
The architecture and feature details above come from vendor product pages, project materials, setup documentation, and an App Store listing. They do not establish that either option has been independently security-audited or performance-tested, and they do not provide a comparative benchmark. Treat feature counts and commercial terms as vendor or storefront statements, not proof of data accuracy. These integrations also should not be used as a basis for clinical advice.
