The best-supported updated count is 672,075 people notified, not “over 780,000.” Maine’s Attorney General filing and March 2026 reporting on Marquis Software Solutions’ notices support the lower figure. The breach was recorded on August 14, 2025, and involved Marquis’s systems—not, according to Marquis, its customers’ systems.
What happened in the Marquis data breach?
Marquis Software Solutions, a vendor that handled data for business customers including banks and credit unions, reported an external system breach, classified in Maine’s filing as hacking. The filing lists August 14, 2025, as both the occurrence and discovery date. California’s Attorney General registry also lists notices related to an August 14 breach, with reports dated December 2, 2025, and February 11, 2026. Marquis reported the event on behalf of business customers that owned the affected data. That distinction matters: a vendor’s breach does not, by itself, mean a bank’s own computer systems were compromised. BleepingComputer reported that the incident disrupted operations at 74 banks and quoted Marquis’s notification letter: “The incident was limited to Marquis’s systems and did not affect our customer’s systems.” BleepingComputer’s March 18, 2026 report.

The current supported figure is 672,075 people notified, according to the Maine filing and BleepingComputer’s March 2026 report. The “over 780,000” figure in the earlier headline is not substantiated by those updated records, so it should not be treated as the confirmed total. Counts reported during an evolving disclosure can differ; the filings and later reporting cited here identify 672,075.

What information may have been involved?
Maine’s filing lists these categories as potentially involved for Maine residents:
- Names and addresses
- Telephone numbers
- Social Security numbers
- Taxpayer identification numbers
- Financial account information, excluding security or access codes
- Dates of birth

Was my bank account or bank affected?
A notice connected to Marquis does not establish that your bank’s systems were breached or that funds were accessed. The incident was at Marquis, and Marquis said customer systems were not affected. Reporting described disruption to the operations of 74 banks, which is distinct from evidence that those banks’ own systems were compromised.

What should you do if you received a notice?
- Verify the notice. Contact the bank or other business named in the letter through its established official channels. Ask whether it issued a Marquis-related notice for you.
- Read the notice for your specific data. Identify which information types it says may have been involved, along with the monitoring offer, eligibility terms, enrollment method, and deadline.
- Decide whether to enroll in the offered monitoring. Maine filings describe complimentary Epiq Privacy Solutions ID services, but the terms are not identical across filings. One filing describes 12 months of credit and identity monitoring, including identity insurance and resolution services; a separate filing describes 12–24 months of Epiq credit monitoring with alerts, dark web monitoring, credit protection, and identity restoration. - Respond to suspicious activity. A sample notice reported by Marquis advises recipients to change passwords, notify their financial institution or company as applicable, take additional protective steps, and report suspicious incidents to local law enforcement or the state Attorney General. Is the Marquis breach linked to SonicWall?
The incident is recorded as a breach of Marquis’s external systems, but the precise causal link to SonicWall is disputed. Marquis has attributed the attack to information from SonicWall’s cloud backup incident; SonicWall has disputed that the events are connected.
