Indian shares rose on Monday, October 5, 2026, but the session’s reported stock rankings are for the NIFTY 50—not a verified Sensex-only list. ITC led NIFTY 50 gainers, while HCL Technologies was the biggest decliner in that index.

How the Nifty and Sensex closed

The Nifty 50 ended at 22,555.75, up 133.80 points, or 0.60%. The Sensex closed at 72,382.47, gaining 472.77 points, or 0.66%. The Economic Times and Upstox reported matching benchmark closes for the session: The Economic Times’ October 5 market wrap and Upstox’s October 5 report.

The Economic Times described the rise as a rebound after a prolonged losing run. Its report associated support for the session with softer-than-expected US jobs data and moderating crude oil; Upstox also pointed to easing crude and positive Asian-market cues. These are explanations cited by the reports, not proof that any one factor caused the gains.

NIFTY 50’s biggest reported gainers and losers

The following rankings and percentage changes are for the NIFTY 50 on October 5, as reported by Upstox. Angel One independently corroborated the top three names on each side; Angel One’s report also identifies the leading movers.

Sector performance and market breadth

The benchmark gains did not mean that every share rose. The Economic Times reported 1,846 NSE stocks advancing, 1,745 declining and 115 unchanged. Among broader indices, the Nifty Midcap 100 rose 0.67% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gained 0.47%.

Sector performance was mixed: the Nifty FMCG and Nifty Consumer Durables indices rose around 2% each, while the Nifty Healthcare and Nifty Pharma indices fell nearly 1% each, according to the same report. The split between advancing and declining shares, alongside divergent sector moves, shows why a positive headline-index close alone does not describe the whole session.

What the reported technical view said

Hariselvan Radhakrishnan, founder and CEO of HST Wealth, told The Economic Times that the Nifty tested a broken weekly 200-day simple moving average zone at 22,580–22,600 but finished below it. He described the levels as conditional: “A sustained move above this band could extend the recovery toward 22,800, while rejection would keep 22,400 as the immediate support.”

The same report framed a stronger rebound scenario around a Nifty close above 22,600 with broader participation and Bank Nifty above 55,175. It also cited renewed crude strength or a hawkish RBI outcome as risks. These are attributed market commentary, not assured outcomes or investment recommendations; the figures refer to the October 5, 2026 report, not current market levels.
