Mario Kart World ranks first for players who want new movement, connected roads and a large-scale elimination mode; Mario Kart 8 Deluxe ranks second, but offers the more traditional racing structure and a 96-course package when its Booster Course Pass is included. This is a focused ranking of the two games directly compared in the available evidence—not a literal ranking of every Mario Kart release. The series spans console, arcade and mobile releases, as well as real-world and enhanced-edition entries, and there is no established single rule here for counting them as distinct games.

What this ranking includes—and what “every Mario Kart game” can mean

There is no self-evident way to count the whole franchise. A list might include distinct console games only, or also arcade releases, Mario Kart Tour, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit and enhanced editions such as Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Nintendo Life’s catalog groups releases across multiple platform categories, making it useful for discovering the range, but it does not by itself settle a definitive inclusion rule.

To avoid presenting a partial list as exhaustive, this ranking covers the two contemporary Switch-family games directly compared by TechRadar on January 30, 2026: Mario Kart World for Nintendo Switch 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe for Nintendo Switch. The original Mario Kart 8 for Wii U is a separate release, not another name for Deluxe. GameSpot records the original game’s first release as May 30, 2014, and gives separate review scores for it and Deluxe; those are one outlet’s scores, not a series-wide consensus.

How the two games are ranked

The order is editorial judgment, not a claim about universal critical consensus. The ranking weighs how much each game offers in its central racing structure, the variety of ways to play, handling and movement, replay value, and approachability. TechRadar’s handling and mode comparisons are one reviewer’s analysis; Nintendo’s product announcement establishes specific Deluxe features and course totals, not an overall winner.

#1 Best Overall
Mario Kart™ World (Nintendo Switch 2)
  • Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
  • Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode
  • Explore courses at your own pace and wander the world to discover fun surprises in Free Roam

Course totals need version context. Nintendo says the Booster Course Pass adds 48 courses to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, making 96 courses in the expanded offering. That 96-course figure describes Deluxe with the pass, not the base game on its own. Nintendo’s regional announcement says a Mario Kart 8 Deluxe + Booster Course Pass set launched on December 1, 2023; it also notes that additional data is required to play Wave 6 and that online features require internet access and a Nintendo Account.

Mario Kart games ranked from worst to best

Rank Game and platform Course offering Mode and race-size comparison Why it ranks here
2 Mario Kart 8 Deluxe — Nintendo Switch 96 courses with the Booster Course Pass; Nintendo says the pass adds 48. The base-game total is not stated in the cited comparison sources. TechRadar characterizes it as the more traditional Grand Prix-style game and contrasts its 12 racers with World’s 24 racers in Knockout Tour. Its expanded course library and beginner-friendly assist make it a strong all-round package, but this ranking gives more weight to World’s new structure and movement options.
1 Mario Kart World — Nintendo Switch 2 Not stated in the cited comparison sources. TechRadar reports 24 racers in Knockout Tour, compared with 12 in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and highlights Free Roam alongside the new elimination mode. It takes the top spot for changing the shape of the experience: connected roads, additional movement options and modes beyond the familiar Grand Prix format.

2. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe: the broader classic package

Deluxe is the safer pick for someone who wants familiar kart-racing structure backed by a large course selection. The Booster Course Pass materially changes the scale of that library: Nintendo describes the expanded offering as 96 courses, including 48 added courses. Treat that as the pass-inclusive total, rather than a count for the base game.

Rank #2
Mario Kart World Standard - Nintendo Switch 2 [Digital Code]
  • Race from one course to another through interconnected paths that span the world
  • Traverse mountains, forests, cities, and more—with shifting weather patterns and a day/night cycle
  • Ride on rails, jump off walls, skim across water, and more as you race for the finish line
  • Take on the adrenaline-packed Knockout Tour—a fierce 24-driver elimination mode

Approachability is another strength. Nintendo says Smart Steering can help beginners race without falling off the track. That is a specific assist feature, not a general accessibility certification. TechRadar presents Deluxe’s more traditional Grand Prix approach and tighter, more forgiving handling as contrasts with World; those handling judgments belong to that reviewer.

Deluxe places second because this ranking values structural novelty more heavily than sheer course volume or familiarity. For players who prefer a conventional race format—or who prioritize a large course library—the reasons to choose Deluxe over World are substantial.

1. Mario Kart World: the more adventurous format

World ranks first because it offers the more substantial change to how a Mario Kart game is organized. TechRadar highlights connected roads, new movement options, Free Roam and Knockout Tour, describing a broader structure than Deluxe’s traditional Grand Prix focus. Its comparison also characterizes World as more mechanically varied and punishing. That can reward players seeking more ways to move and compete, though it may be less welcoming to someone who values a forgiving, familiar feel.

The scale of Knockout Tour changes the character of a race: TechRadar reports 24 racers in that mode, against 12 racers in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Those figures refer to the comparison’s specific mode context; they should not be read as a blanket player-count specification for every mode in either game.

Puyo Puyo Tetris - Nintendo Switch
  • Ferocious Competition - At the heart of Puyo Puyo Tetris is the fighting spirit of players competing against each other to be most clever, cunning, and quick-witted one to set up devastating attacks on opponents. It's the classic easy-to-learn puzzles mashed up into a multiplayer battle like no other!
  • Adventure Mode - The game also has a single player mode with ten unique acts, eatch with ten stages. They feature different characters from the Puyo Puyo or Tetris universes and have unique challenges to learn and master game mechanics that players must overcome!
  • Arcade Modes - Online play has Puzzle League, which tracks players' ratings, players can save replays to upload and share, and more.
  • There's also an in-game shop players can use their points to unlock different Puyo and Tetrimino skins, background music, stages, and more.

World wins this editorial ranking on format and ambition, not on a verified course-count advantage or an aggregate review score. The comparison sources do not establish World’s course total, and a single reviewer’s analysis cannot settle which game every player will prefer.

Which one should you choose?

  • Choose Mario Kart World if connected-road exploration, Free Roam, new movement options and Knockout Tour are the features you most want.
  • Choose Mario Kart 8 Deluxe if you prefer a traditional Grand Prix structure, want the pass-inclusive 96-course offering, or value Smart Steering as a way for beginners to stay on the track.
  • Compare editions carefully: Mario Kart 8 on Wii U and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe on Switch are distinct releases. Likewise, the 96-course figure applies to Deluxe with the Booster Course Pass, not to the base game alone.
