In Mario Kart Tour, a driver’s special skill determined which special item that driver could use. For score chasing, players often favored Coin Box, Boomerang, Giant Banana, and Lucky Seven, but Nintendo did not publish an official best-to-worst ranking. These are community strategy picks, not a universal verdict.
Mario Kart Tour’s service ended on September 29, 2026, so this guide explains how the mechanics worked and what players valued rather than suggesting the live service is still playable.
What a driver’s special skill did
A special skill was the special item associated with a driver. Nintendo’s examples include Mario’s Fire Flower and Peach’s Heart. The driver skill was different from the skills assigned to karts and gliders: kart skills affected actions such as Rocket Starts and Mini-Turbo boosts, while glider skills affected the chance of receiving a specified item and the points earned when using it. Nintendo’s special-skills FAQ describes these equipment roles.
How special skills connected to Frenzy and scoring
A Frenzy required two conditions: the driver had to be racing on one of their favorite courses, and the item draw had to produce three of the same item. Nintendo says a Frenzy gives unlimited use of that item for a short time and makes the driver invincible. A higher driver level made Frenzy activation more likely, according to Nintendo’s Frenzy FAQ and level FAQ.

The special skill therefore shaped the actions and scoring opportunities available when the item appeared, particularly during a Frenzy. It did not determine a score by itself: Nintendo’s game description emphasizes combinations of drivers, karts, and gliders as part of high-score play. Course fit, race circumstances, and the rest of the loadout all mattered.
Which skills players often chose for score potential
In score-focused community advice, Coin Box, Boomerang, Giant Banana, and Lucky Seven are often grouped as “plus skills”—items players regard as offering especially strong scoring potential, including during a Frenzy. A Mario Kart Tour community discussion reflects that strategy shorthand. It is not an official Nintendo tier list, and the available evidence does not establish exact performance statistics or a reliable order among those four skills.

- For score chasing: These four are the community picks to consider first, subject to the driver’s course coverage and the race context.
- For defensive or practical utility: A skill may be useful for reasons beyond raw score, so a score-oriented reputation does not make it best for every situation.
- For character preference: Enjoying a favorite driver is a valid goal; the score-focused community heuristic is not a rule for every player.
How to interpret “most useful”
There is no single answer that applies to every goal. If “useful” means maximizing scoring opportunities, the four community-favored skills are reasonable names to know. If it means defense, course-specific fit, or simply racing with a preferred character, the best choice may differ. Nintendo explains the mechanics but does not rank all driver skills against one another, so claims of an exact universal winner or precise skill-by-skill advantage go beyond the evidence.
Service status
Nintendo Support states that Mario Kart Tour service ended at 11:00 p.m. PT on September 29, 2026, and Nintendo UK’s game page marks the service discontinued. Nintendo’s page describes Frenzy as granting an “unlimited supply of a certain item” and invincibility, but that is a description of the game mechanic, not an indication that the online service remains available.
