Mario Ferraro scored his first goal as a Winnipeg Jet in his Winnipeg debut, but the Jets’ 2026–27 opener ended in a 4–3 overtime loss to the Boston Bruins on October 2. Ferraro’s second-period goal briefly put Winnipeg ahead; Boston tied the game late in the third, then won in overtime.
What happened in Ferraro’s Winnipeg debut?
At Canada Life Centre, Dylan DeMelo gave Winnipeg an early lead before Boston went ahead 2–1 after the first period. Kyle Connor tied it with a second-period power-play goal. The Jets said the goal extended Connor’s NHL-record run of scoring in nine consecutive season openers.
With fewer than 15 seconds left in the second, Adam Lowry worked the puck down low and passed it back to Ferraro. Ferraro’s shot deflected off a Boston player and went in, making it 3–2 and giving him his first goal as a Jet, according to the Jets’ game recap.
How did Boston win?
The Jets carried their one-goal lead into the third, but Elias Lindholm tied the game at 18:22 with Boston goaltender Jeremy Swayman pulled for an extra attacker. JJ Peterka scored 3:21 into overtime to give the Bruins a 4–3 win. Boston’s official recap also confirms the final score and lists Ferraro among Winnipeg’s scorers.

Why Ferraro’s goal matters—and what it does not establish
This was Ferraro’s Winnipeg debut, not his NHL debut. Before joining the Jets, he had played 490 NHL games for San Jose, according to Winnipeg’s signing announcement. His first goal in a Jets uniform was a milestone in a game that briefly swung Winnipeg’s way, but one goal in one game is not evidence of a changed offensive role.

The Jets announced on July 1, 2026, that Ferraro had agreed to a three-year contract with a $4 million average annual value. The team’s July 2 release described him as a 27-year-old Toronto native who shoots left.

Ferraro’s recent Sharks production
Winnipeg reported that Ferraro played all 82 games for San Jose in 2025–26, recording 23 points (7 goals and 16 assists) and 35 penalty minutes. He led the Sharks with 150 blocked shots and averaged 21:02 of ice time per game. Those team-reported figures give context to his established workload as a defenceman; the Winnipeg goal added a scoring moment to his first appearance for his new club.

CBS Sports/RotoWire’s secondary recap reported that Ferraro recorded three shots, three blocked shots and 17:58 of ice time in the debut. Those individual totals were not included in the Jets’ recap.
