Manulife’s long-term care (LTC) reinsurance transaction with Munich Re Life US has closed and is effective July 1, 2026. The often-cited C$3.2 billion is the IFRS reserve amount covered at an 80% quota share—not a cash purchase price. Manulife’s October 1, 2026 close notice confirmed the deal.

What closed, and when?

Manulife announced the agreement on August 5, 2026, and said it had closed on October 1, 2026. The agreement’s effective date is July 1, 2026. The closing announcement supersedes the original expectation that the transaction would close in the fourth quarter, subject to regulatory approvals. Manulife’s closing release identifies the counterparty as Munich American Reassurance Company, also known as Munich Re Life US, a subsidiary of Munich Re Group.

What does the C$3.2 billion figure mean?

Manulife reported C$3.2 billion of IFRS 17 reserves at an 80% quota share. The company defines the reserve measure as an IFRS current estimate comprising the present value of future cash flows, a risk adjustment and a contractual service margin. It is not a stated purchase price, premium or amount of cash paid to Manulife. The August 5 announcement and the close notice report the transaction details.

Which risks and assets are involved?

Manulife said the agreement transfers the full biometric risk on the covered LTC block and that no assets will transfer. Biometric risk concerns uncertainties such as claims arising from policyholders’ health and longevity experience. The public releases do not provide the complete contract or explain how policy administration will change, so the statements about risk transfer should not be read as a description of every contractual or operational term.

What effects does Manulife expect?

The impacts below were estimates disclosed by Manulife in its August announcement, not results independently measured after closing. The company said its figures and estimates were based on June 30, 2026 positions unless otherwise stated.

  • Morbidity sensitivity: Manulife estimated a 24% cumulative reduction in LTC morbidity sensitivity upon closing across its three LTC reinsurance transactions. This is a change in the company’s sensitivity measure, not evidence that claims or morbidity themselves fell by 24%.
  • Cede: The company described the transaction as a modest negative 5% cede on an IFRS basis.
  • Earnings: Manulife estimated an approximately C$30 million first-year impact to core earnings and net income attributable to shareholders, with the impact declining over time. Core earnings is a non-GAAP measure.

These are Manulife’s own estimates and characterizations, not independently verified forecasts. Its October close notice confirmed completion but did not restate each impact estimate. The August release contains the company’s impact disclosures.

How does this fit Manulife’s earlier LTC reinsurance deals?

Manulife described the Munich Re deal as its third LTC reinsurance transaction in under three years and its first on a standalone LTC block. Its comparison of the three transactions gives these figures and dates:

Munich Re Life US C$3.2 billion of IFRS reserves at an 80% quota share; standalone LTC block August 2026 October 1, 2026; effective July 1, 2026

The Global Atlantic and RGA figures are reported transaction amounts, while the Munich Re figure is an IFRS reserve measure; they are not directly comparable measures of deal value. Manulife’s comparison is in its August announcement.
