A manufacturer warranty is a written promise to repair, replace, or sometimes refund a product when a problem meets the warranty’s specific terms. It is not blanket protection against every breakdown. For a U.S. purchase, check the actual warranty for its time or mileage limit, covered parts, exclusions, required steps, remedy, and any labor or shipping costs before assuming a repair will be free.

What a manufacturer warranty covers

The written warranty determines what the manufacturer has promised for the particular product. A qualifying defect or malfunction may lead to repair, replacement, or a refund, but the warranty can limit that promise by component, time or mileage, use, maintenance, registration, or other conditions. Read the document that applies to your model rather than relying on a product listing or a general description of the brand’s warranty.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises consumers to check whether specific parts or repairs are listed as covered. If they are not, assume they are not covered. The FTC also notes: “Whenever there’s a warranty, the law says it must be available for you to read before you buy.” FTC guidance on warranties explains what to look for.

Questions to answer in the warranty

  • How long does coverage last? Check the start date and any time or mileage limit.
  • Which parts and repairs are included? Confirm that the failed component and the type of repair are covered.
  • What must you do? Look for maintenance, usage, registration, or claim requirements. Some warranties may require a registration card; registration is not a universal condition.
  • What will the company do? Identify whether the stated remedy is repair, replacement, or refund.
  • Who handles the claim? The warranty may direct you to the manufacturer or allow you to contact the original seller.
  • Who pays extra costs? Check whether you must pay labor, shipping, or other expenses.

Do not treat common examples such as accidental damage, ordinary wear, or misuse as universal exclusions. The product’s terms and applicable law determine whether a particular failure qualifies.

How to compare two manufacturer warranties

The longest coverage period is not automatically the best value. Compare the terms that affect the repair you may actually need, as well as how easy it is to make a claim. The FTC recommends examining the warrantor’s reputation, coverage duration and scope, promised remedy, claim process, and repair expenses.

What to compare What to check
Duration Time or mileage limit, and when coverage begins.
Coverage Parts and repairs named in the warranty, plus maintenance or use conditions.
Remedy Whether the company promises repair, replacement, or a refund for an eligible claim.
Costs Whether labor, shipping, or other expenses are your responsibility.
Claim process Who you contact, what steps you must follow, and whether registration is required by these terms.
Warrantor The company backing the promise and its reputation for handling claims.

How to make a warranty claim

  1. Find the warranty for your product. Check the model’s paperwork or the manufacturer’s warranty page, then confirm the terms and coverage period for the failed part or issue.
  2. Locate the claim contact. Follow the warranty’s instructions and determine whether the manufacturer or original seller handles the claim.
  3. Confirm the remedy and costs. Ask whether the covered remedy is repair, replacement, or refund, and whether labor, shipping, or other charges apply.
  4. Gather your records. Keep the warranty, dated receipt, model and serial details, useful records of the problem, and communications about the claim. The FTC says, “Save your product receipt with the warranty.” The receipt helps prove the purchase date and original ownership.
  5. Describe the problem accurately and follow the stated steps. Keep copies of what you submit and note whom you contacted and when.

How warranties differ from other protections

Written manufacturer warranty

This is the manufacturer’s written promise, limited by its terms. Federal warranty law includes the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, but it does not make every product warranty identical. The FTC’s Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act overview and Businessperson’s Guide to Federal Warranty Law explain the federal framework. The latter describes a warranty as “a contract that commits you to stand behind your product.”

Implied warranties

Implied warranties may provide protections even when a seller has not given you a written warranty. The FTC describes merchantability as an assurance that a product does what it is supposed to do. Fitness for a particular purpose concerns a seller’s recommendation that a product is suitable for a particular job. Disclaimers, “as is” sales, and state law affect how these protections apply. The FTC notes that implied warranties might last as long as four years in some states; that is an example of state variation, not a nationwide duration rule. For a specific dispute, consult your state consumer protection office or a lawyer. See the FTC’s consumer guidance.

Service contracts

A separately purchased service contract is not the manufacturer’s warranty, even when a seller calls it an “extended warranty.” Review that contract on its own terms: its price, term, covered repairs, exclusions, and claim requirements. The FTC distinguishes service contracts from warranties in its warranty guidance.

Third-party parts and repairs

Using an independent repair shop or a third-party part does not automatically cancel all warranty rights. Federal law generally bars a warrantor from conditioning coverage on a named brand of part or service unless the warrantor provides it free under the warranty or obtains an FTC waiver. That does not mean every repair or modification is irrelevant: a claim can still turn on whether the failed item is covered and whether the repair or other damage caused the problem. The FTC explains this distinction in its warranty warning guidance.
