California’s State Athletic Commission reportedly ordered REK to stop holding or promoting certain combat-sport events involving humans without approval and licensing. That was a cease-and-desist notice—not a court ruling that the September 18, 2026, man-versus-robot exhibition was illegal. Reporting says the San Francisco event paired influencer Frankie LaPenna with REK’s remotely piloted Rekbot, but accounts disagree about who won.
What happened in the man-versus-robot fight?
Reports place the event in San Francisco on September 18, 2026. Influencer Frankie LaPenna faced Rekbot, a humanoid robot associated with REK, in a cage-style exhibition. Circulated footage showed the robot kicking LaPenna down. REK later reportedly said LaPenna prevailed over the full encounter, so the brief clip and the promoter’s account describe different outcomes. The result has not been independently established in the reporting.
Was the robot controlled by a person?
Reporting describes Rekbot as teleoperated: a human pilot directed it using VR equipment, while software assisted with balance and stability. The reports do not identify which headset, if any, was used in this bout. They also do not establish that the robot was autonomous or that AI selected its attacks.
A report says LaPenna was required to wear protective motorcycle gear and specialized gloves. It does not name brands or models, so the account does not establish that any particular product was tested or recommended.

Why did California order the promoter to stop?
Secondary reporting says the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) sent REK a cease-and-desist notice concerning boxing or mixed martial arts contests, matches, or exhibitions involving a human in California. Tom’s Hardware reproduces language attributed to the notice ordering the recipients to stop holding, promoting, or advertising such events without prior commission approval, and to stop promoting or participating in them without a license under California Business and Professions Code section 18640. The quoted wording is reported by Tom’s Hardware; the specific notice was not independently verified against an official commission document.
The state’s official description confirms CSAC regulates professional and amateur boxing, kickboxing, and mixed martial arts statewide through participant licensing and event supervision. That general remit explains why an event presented as a human-involved boxing or martial-arts exhibition could draw the commission’s attention. It does not, by itself, resolve how the rules apply to a human facing a remotely operated robot.

Did a court rule the event illegal?
No court ruling resolving this event’s legal status was identified in the reporting. A commission cease-and-desist notice is an agency action, not a final court judgment.
