Marketer Jack Ryan expected a job interview—not a video call with a computer-generated interviewer. In a 2024 interview reported by 404 Media, he encountered a red-haired woman avatar representing Fairgo, an AI recruiting startup. The exchange drew attention to a practical question for applicants: what does an AI interviewer actually assess, and where does a human fit in?
What happened in Jack Ryan’s AI-avatar interview?
Ryan was applying for a job when he met Fairgo’s interviewer avatar over video. The exchange included the avatar asking about his work experience and offering this advice: “I find it helps when candidates tell me a story in answering the questions.” 404 Media reported the interaction on September 27, 2024.
Ryan’s smirk and critical reaction helped make the clip memorable, but the story was not simply that an avatar appeared on screen. It was a real job application handled through an automated interview experience—one that left Ryan questioning whether a system could understand the human side of an interview.

Futurism’s October 1, 2024 follow-up described Ryan as a marketer and self-described disabled athlete. He questioned whether AI could interpret emotion and facial reactions well enough to provide a well-rounded interview, saying, “I can’t imagine AI, [large language models], and other tools are able to interpret the human emotion and facial reactions to provide an actual, well-rounded interview.” The bracketed wording is part of the quote as published by Futurism.

Ryan also raised concerns about disability disclosure and remote work, and about the value of human interaction in hiring. He called the experience to 404 Media “a perfect demonstration of late stage capitalism.” Futurism quoted him concluding, “it’s laughable at best and terrifying at worst.” Those remarks explain his reaction; they do not establish that this particular system discriminated against him or that similar interviews commonly produce the same experience.
What does Fairgo say its AI interview platform does?
Fairgo’s current website describes an employer-facing platform for live AI video interviews, candidate screening, transcripts, scorecards, and shortlists. It says candidates can interview on their own schedule, after which employers can review summaries and decide whom to advance. Fairgo also says its AI evaluates skills, culture fit, and potential. These are the company’s current product descriptions, not independently verified findings about the configuration Ryan encountered in 2024. Fairgo’s website.

In Futurism’s 2024 report, Fairgo CEO Julian Bright said the AI was intended to reduce human bias, did not select candidates, and did not use interview audio or video to evaluate them. That is a statement attributed to Bright at the time. The current website’s description of AI-generated assessments and shortlists is not enough to determine whether the product’s 2024 configuration or data handling matched today’s marketing description. The specific setup used in Ryan’s interview remains unclear in the reported material.
How should applicants interpret AI-interview claims?
Fairgo’s homepage currently displays the following performance figures. The company page gives no study, sample, methodology, or publication year for them, so they should be read as vendor claims rather than independently substantiated results.

The reported incident also cannot show how often AI-avatar interviews occur, whether candidates fare better or worse in them, or what accessibility effects they have. It is one reported case, not a representative study.
For applicants trying to understand a particular company’s process, useful questions are whether AI only asks questions or also scores candidates; what criteria and information feed any assessment; what accommodations and notice are available; whether a person reviews or can override the result; and how audio, video, transcripts, and other candidate data are handled. The answers depend on the employer and the product configuration, so an avatar’s presence alone does not reveal how a hiring decision is made.
