To stay safer on the web, check the actual domain, distrust unexpected pressure, avoid downloads from ads and pop-ups, heed browser warnings, and open important services independently. Keep your software updated and protect accounts with unique passwords and multifactor authentication. No single visual clue or security tool can prove that every website is safe.
How can I tell if a website is a scam?
Start with the address and the reason you arrived there. Scam pages can imitate familiar organizations, ask for passwords, offer harmful downloads, or send visitors through several redirects. A familiar logo or a high search result does not prove a page is legitimate.
1. Read the actual web address
Look closely at the domain for misspellings, extra words, or unexpected subdomains. A deceptive address may resemble a real organization’s site while belonging to someone else. The FBI warns that malicious URLs can look legitimate and that criminal traffic distribution systems can route visitors through intermediate destinations before they reach a phishing page, financial scam, or malware. The destination may vary according to details such as a visitor’s device, location, operating system, or browser, so a quick preview cannot conclusively clear a link. The FBI’s June 18, 2026 public service announcement explains these redirect systems.

Consider the precise domain and context instead: whether you expected the message, whether the address matches the organization you intended to visit, and whether you reached it through a trustworthy route.

2. Pause when a message creates urgency
Unexpected demands to verify an account, pay immediately, share credentials, or install software are reasons to stop—not reasons to act faster. Don’t use the link or phone number in the message. Contact the organization through a website or number you already know is genuine. The FTC’s phishing guidance recommends this independent verification approach.
3. Don’t download from ads, pop-ups, or unfamiliar sites
Fake software ads can appear in search results and social media. Navigate to the software maker’s known address yourself rather than relying on an ad or an unexpected download prompt. Avoid unfamiliar free-download sites, and never call a support number displayed in a pop-up. The FTC’s malware guidance warns that pop-up numbers may be part of a scam.

4. Heed browser warnings
A browser warning about a dangerous site is a signal to stop. Chrome says its phishing and malware detection is on by default and advises users not to visit a site that triggers a dangerous-site warning. An unflagged page is not thereby guaranteed safe; browser protection cannot establish the safety of every site. See Chrome Help’s guidance on warnings about unsafe sites.
How should I reach important accounts safely?
5. Navigate independently
For banking, email, shopping, and account recovery, use a saved bookmark or type the address you know. That avoids relying on an unsolicited message, an ad, or a redirect chain to take you to the right place. If you need to contact a company, use contact details from a source you already trust—not a number or link in a suspicious message.

6. Keep software current
Updates for your browser, operating system, and security software can fix known weaknesses. Turn on automatic updates where available, and use security software that stays current and scans new files. The FTC’s malware guidance recommends updated security software and cautious downloading; CISA’s Secure Our World guidance also emphasizes software updates.
7. Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication
Use a different strong password for each important account, and turn on multifactor authentication (MFA) wherever it is offered. A password manager can help you maintain unique passwords. A compatible hardware security key is another possible MFA method, but availability depends on the account and device. MFA helps protect accounts; it does not make clicking a risky link safe. Should I use Chrome Enhanced Safe Browsing?
Chrome’s Standard and Enhanced Safe Browsing offer different balances of protection and privacy. Google describes Enhanced Protection as stronger and more customized, while noting that it sends more browsing information to Google, including URLs and a small sample of page content. Choose based on your comfort with that data sharing. Google’s claim that Enhanced Protection is “twice as safe” compared with Standard Protection is Google’s own product comparison, not an independent study or a guarantee. Can a website give my device a virus?
A malicious site can try to trick you into downloading harmful software, and deceptive redirects can lead to malware. The sources here do not establish that every visit to a suspicious page infects a device; the risk depends on what happens during the visit and on the device’s protections. Don’t download unexpected files or install anything prompted by a suspicious page.

What should I do if I clicked a suspicious link?
A click alone does not prove that your device or accounts have been compromised. If you entered a password, installed a file, or notice unusual behavior, take these steps:
- Stop entering sensitive information. Don’t sign in to banking, email, or other important accounts on a device you suspect may be compromised.
- Don’t call pop-up numbers. The FTC says, “Never call a phone number that appears in a pop-up window.”
- Update security software and run a scan. Follow the security software’s instructions for handling anything it detects.
- Secure affected accounts. From a device you trust if you suspect compromise, change passwords and turn on two-factor authentication.
- Use trusted help or report the incident. Contact a support provider using details you know are genuine. The FTC accepts reports of suspected scams or malware; use the FBI’s IC3 for suspected criminal intrusion into a website.
Unexpected browser redirects, new toolbars, frequent pop-ups, slowdowns or crashes, disabled system tools, and messages you did not send can be signs of malware, but none proves infection on its own. The FTC explains warning signs and response steps. For suspected criminal activity involving a website, the FBI’s IC3 announcement provides the relevant reporting context.
