Choose Makita tools by the work you need them to do and the battery platform you are willing to build around. Makita’s CXT, LXT, and XGT families serve different roles, and their batteries are not universally interchangeable. Before paying, verify the exact tool model, battery and charger compatibility, kit contents, and warranty terms for your country.
Which Makita battery platform fits your work?
Start with the tools you expect to use regularly, not a platform’s voltage label alone. List those tools, check which platform offers each exact model, and consider whether you already own compatible batteries and chargers. Makita describes its cordless families as compact 10.8V CXT, mid-range 18V LXT, and high-power 40Vmax XGT in its 2025 corporate report.
CXT: compact 10.8V tools
CXT is Makita’s compact 10.8V family. Consider it when the specific tools you need are available in CXT and compact size is a priority. Check the tool’s exact model and battery type rather than assuming CXT batteries fit another Makita platform.
LXT: the broad 18V lineup
Makita U.S.A. describes LXT as an 18V slide-style battery platform with more than 350 cordless products. That breadth can make LXT worth considering if you expect to add several tools over time. For work where handling matters, Makita says its LXT Sub-Compact tools are smaller and lighter while retaining LXT compatibility. Confirm the size and specifications of the particular model you are considering; the platform description alone does not establish a model-by-model weight or performance comparison.
XGT: the 40Vmax family
Makita describes XGT as a 40Vmax/80Vmax platform. Its U.S. product page says microchips in the battery and tool monitor heat, overload, and over-discharge. Those are Makita’s platform claims, not an independent comparison against CXT or LXT. Review the XGT product page for the particular tools you need.

There is no universal winner: first confirm that the platform has the exact tools your work requires, then weigh the cost of batteries and chargers, tool handling, local availability, and warranty support. The available official information does not establish a complete independent, model-by-model comparison of platform prices, weights, or performance.

No—not as a general rule. LXT and XGT are separate battery platforms, as are CXT and the other families. Do not infer compatibility from the Makita name, a similar-looking battery, or a voltage figure. Check the exact battery and tool model in Makita’s documentation before purchasing or fitting a battery.

Some specific products have adapter options, but that does not make the platforms natively interchangeable. Makita describes ConnectX adapters for specified XGT and 36V (18V X2) LXT products. Treat this as product-specific compatibility, not permission to use any battery with any tool. The same caution applies to 36V LXT tools: Makita says these use two 18V LXT batteries, not one 40Vmax XGT battery. See Makita’s innovation information and LXT product page.
What should you check about batteries, chargers, and kits?
A bare tool may cost less upfront, but it does not necessarily include the battery and charger needed to use it. Compare the complete cost and contents of each offer rather than comparing a bare tool with a ready-to-use kit.

- Exact tool model: Match the model number in the listing to the manufacturer’s product information.
- Platform and battery: Confirm the battery family required by the tool and whether batteries are included.
- Battery count and capacity: Check how many batteries the kit contains and the capacity of each.
- Charger: Identify the charger model and confirm it suits the included battery.
- Case and accessories: Check whether the offer includes a case or bag and which accessories, if any, are supplied.
If STAR Protection matters to you, Makita says it operates when a STAR-marked LXT battery is used with a STAR-marked tool or a tool with a yellow terminal. Check the markings on the actual battery and tool; being part of LXT alone does not establish that the combination has STAR Protection. Makita describes the requirements on its innovation page.

How should you check warranty and local support?
Warranty terms depend on the country and product. In the United States, Makita’s FAQ states that lithium-ion tools, batteries, and chargers are covered for three years from the original purchase, subject to the stated exclusions; the ConnectX portable backpack power supply is excluded. Read the U.S. warranty FAQ for the applicable terms before buying.
Do not assume that U.S. coverage applies elsewhere. Makita India publishes a separate warranty policy, with terms that differ by product category; consult its India warranty information if purchasing there. In your own market, check who provides authorized service, what proof of purchase is required, whether registration rules apply, and how replacement parts are obtained.
