For fall yard work, match the tool to the task: a blower moves leaves and debris, a string trimmer handles edges and overgrowth, a chainsaw is for suitable tree and branch cutting, and a hedge trimmer shapes shrubs. These are useful categories, not a required four-tool routine—many yards need only the first one or two.
Which Makita tools help with fall yard cleanup?
Makita’s catalog groups outdoor power equipment into categories that fit common seasonal jobs. The models below are examples from Makita’s official catalog, not a ranking of the four best tools or a claim that every yard needs all four. Makita describes its LXT blowers as cleanup tools and its LXT trimmers as tools for trimming and edging. Its catalog also lists chainsaws for tree-cutting work and hedge trimmers for shrub maintenance.
| Yard task | Tool category | Makita example | Platform and kit details |
|---|---|---|---|
| Move leaves and loose debris | Blower | XBU02PT | 36V (18V X2) LXT brushless kit with two 18V LXT 5.0Ah batteries; Makita lists up to 28 minutes at mid-speed with that battery setup. Manufacturer-listed runtime, not an independent test. Makita Outdoor Power Equipment |
| Trim grass and clean up edges | String trimmer | XRU09PT | 36V (18V X2) LXT brushless kit with 5.0Ah batteries. Makita Outdoor Power Equipment |
| Cut suitable limbs or handle tree-cutting jobs | Chainsaw | XCU07PT | 36V (18V X2) LXT brushless 14-inch chainsaw kit with 5.0Ah batteries. Makita also lists the 40V max XGT GCU04T1, an 18-inch chainsaw kit. These are examples on different platforms, not a head-to-head comparison. | Trim shrubs and hedges | Hedge trimmer | EN5950SH or GHU03M1 | EN5950SH is a 24-inch gas hedge trimmer. GHU03M1 is a 40V max XGT cordless 30-inch hedge-trimmer kit. They use different power systems and are not tested equivalents. Makita Outdoor Power Equipment Makita XGT outdoor equipment |
Choose by the work your yard actually needs
Leaves and general cleanup: blower
A blower is the direct choice for moving fallen leaves and loose debris from lawns, paths, and other outdoor areas. Makita’s XBU02PT is a 36V (18V X2) LXT brushless kit. Makita lists up to 28 minutes of runtime at mid-speed using two 18V LXT 5.0Ah batteries; that is a manufacturer figure for the stated model and battery setup, not an independently measured result. See Makita’s outdoor equipment catalog.
Grass edges and overgrowth: string trimmer
A string trimmer addresses grass along borders and areas a mower may not reach. Makita’s XRU09PT is a 36V (18V X2) LXT brushless kit with 5.0Ah batteries. Makita says its direct-drive brushless trimmers transfer up to 30cc gas-equivalent power, comparing them with its EA3201SRBB 2-stroke gas model. Treat that as the manufacturer’s comparison, not an independent equivalency measurement. Makita’s LXT outdoor equipment page.
#1 Best Overall
- Variable speed control by trigger
- 3 air volume settings: Low, Medium, High
- Vacuum function - can be used as a vacuum with a dust bag. Increased air volume.
- Compact and lightweight design and Ergonomic soft grip
- Equipped with Battery protection circuit: designed to protect the battery from damages due to overdischarge, high temperature or overload current.
Tree or branch cutting: chainsaw
A chainsaw is relevant when the job involves appropriate tree or branch cutting; it is not a routine requirement for fall cleanup. The XCU07PT is a 14-inch 36V (18V X2) LXT brushless kit with 5.0Ah batteries. Makita also lists the 18-inch 40V max XGT GCU04T1 kit. Choose only a saw suited to the material and cutting job, and follow the manufacturer’s safety instructions. The catalog examples do not establish one model as suitable for every user or task. LXT equipment and XGT equipment.
Shrub maintenance: hedge trimmer
A hedge trimmer is intended for trimming shrubs and hedges. Makita’s catalog includes the gas-powered 24-inch EN5950SH and the cordless 30-inch 40V max XGT GHU03M1 kit. These models differ in power system and blade length; the available catalog information does not provide a tested comparison between them. Could a two-tool kit cover the basics?
If leaves and edges are your main concerns, Makita’s XT287SM1 combines an 18V LXT brushless blower and string trimmer. The product page lists one 4.0Ah battery and a charger in the kit, along with manufacturer-listed blower output of up to 459 CFM and 116 MPH and trimmer speed of up to 6,000 RPM. Those figures are product specifications, not independent test results. This kit does not include a chainsaw or hedge trimmer, and its inclusion of one battery should not be confused with the two 5.0Ah batteries specified for the XBU02PT blower kit. Makita’s catalog presents LXT and XGT as separate cordless families, and the cited product pages do not establish cross-platform battery compatibility. Check the exact model and included items rather than assuming that a battery from one Makita family fits another. For the examples here, Makita identifies the XBU02PT and XRU09PT as 36V (18V X2) LXT kits, the XCU07PT as a 36V (18V X2) LXT kit, and the GCU04T1 and GHU03M1 as 40V max XGT kits. The XT287SM1 page specifies one 4.0Ah battery and a charger; consult the listing for any other model to confirm what its kit includes. LXT catalog, XGT catalog, and XT287SM1 product details.
