To improve the chances that people can find and use your interactive tool through AI-mediated search, make its pages crawlable, its purpose and results clear in visible text, and its controls understandable to people and agents. GEO—generative engine optimization—is a useful shorthand for this work, not a universal ranking formula. Google, OpenAI, and Anthropic document different systems and crawler controls, and none promises placement or citation.
What GEO means for a tool site
For a tool site, GEO is best treated as practical work on discoverability and comprehension: help search systems access the right pages, help readers understand what a tool does, and make its interface legible when an agent interacts with it. It does not mean adding a special tag that guarantees an AI answer will cite you.
Keep platform claims in scope. Google’s guidance addresses Google Search features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode; it does not explain how every assistant retrieves or ranks pages. OpenAI and Anthropic publish separate guidance for their products and crawlers.
Start with crawlability and indexability
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet in ordinary Google Search. Google says there are no additional technical requirements for those features, while also warning that eligibility does not guarantee crawling, indexing, or serving. Google Search Central puts it plainly: “Indexing and serving isn’t guaranteed.” See AI Features and Your Website.

Check important tool pages in Google Search Console, including URL Inspection, to diagnose what Googlebot can access and how Google sees the URL. Also check that robots.txt, CDN rules, hosting protections, or authentication have not unintentionally blocked the page. A page that works only after a user signs in may not be accessible to a crawler.
For other assistants, check each vendor’s current crawler documentation rather than assuming that permission for one “AI bot” covers all systems. OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot to help a site appear in ChatGPT search results. Anthropic documents Claude-SearchBot for search and Claude-User for retrieval in response to an individual query. Crawl access supports discovery or retrieval; it does not guarantee that a page will be selected.

Make the tool’s purpose and output clear in text
Give each important tool page a concise, visible explanation of what the tool does, who it is for, what information it takes in, what it produces, and any important limits. Explain results in text rather than relying on an image, canvas, or interaction that leaves no meaningful content for a reader or crawler to interpret. This clarity helps people decide whether the tool fits their task; it is not a promise of an AI citation.

Google recommends people-first content and says important content should be available in textual form. It also says there is no ideal page length for AI search and no rule requiring content to be broken into tiny pieces; its systems can understand context across a page. Keep explanations as long as users need, not as long as a supposed GEO formula suggests. See Creating helpful, reliable, people-first content.

Make interactive controls understandable
Use semantic HTML and accessible names, roles, and states for buttons, fields, menus, and other controls. A button labeled “Calculate monthly payment” communicates more than one labeled only “Go.” Associate form labels with their inputs, expose validation messages, and make state changes—such as a selected option or expanded panel—programmatically discernible.
OpenAI says ChatGPT Atlas uses ARIA tags to interpret page structure and interactive elements, and its publisher FAQ states: “Making your website more accessible helps ChatGPT Agent in Atlas understand it better.” Google describes browser agents as potentially using rendered visual output, the DOM, and the accessibility tree. These are reasons to build a usable, accessible interface, not evidence that a particular agent has tested or passed on your site. See OpenAI’s Publishers and Developers – FAQ.

- Test core tasks with a keyboard, at narrow screen widths, and with assistive technology.
- Ensure the result is presented in readable text and that errors explain how to recover.
- Do not make essential controls or explanatory information available only through hover or visual styling.
Use structured data accurately, not as an AI shortcut
Google says structured data is not required for generative AI features and there is no special schema.org markup to add for them. Structured data can still support an overall SEO strategy, including eligibility for rich results, but it should accurately match content that users can see on the page. It cannot compensate for missing or misleading visible information. See Google’s AI-features guidance.

A sitemap can tell Google which URLs you consider canonical, but submission is a hint: it does not guarantee that Google will fetch the sitemap or crawl its URLs. Keep sitemap entries current and make lastmod truthful. Google says it uses lastmod when it is consistently and verifiably accurate; it should reflect a significant change, such as a change to main content, structured data, or links—not merely a copyright-year update. See Build and submit a sitemap.

Choose crawler access by purpose
Search discovery, possible training use, and user-directed retrieval are different choices. Review each bot’s purpose, the pages or subdomains it can reach, your business objective, and how you will observe its activity. Do not assume that allowing a search crawler also means opting into training, or that blocking a training crawler blocks search.
| Vendor and crawler | Documented purpose | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| OpenAI OAI-SearchBot | Search discovery for ChatGPT search | Allow it if you want to support discovery; access does not promise appearance. |
| OpenAI GPTBot | Content that may be used for training | Make this a separate data-use decision from search visibility. |
| OpenAI ChatGPT-User | Some user actions and page visits | Consider whether user-initiated retrieval should be able to reach the relevant pages. |
| Anthropic Claude-SearchBot | Search quality | Assess separately from Anthropic’s other crawlers. |
| Anthropic ClaudeBot | Potential training use | Its documented role is not the same as search crawling. |
| Anthropic Claude-User | User-directed retrieval | Consider access in light of user-requested page retrieval. |
OpenAI documents the distinctions in its GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, and ChatGPT-User overview and publisher FAQ. The FAQ says a noindex directive may be used when a publisher does not want a disallowed page surfaced as a link and title in the described Atlas circumstance; the crawler must be allowed to read the directive. Anthropic explains its crawler roles and robots.txt behavior in About Claude’s web crawler. Apply the instructions for the specific vendor; bot behavior is not interchangeable.
Measure signals you can actually observe
Use Search Console for Google Search diagnostics and reported performance data. Google cautions that third-party services do not have access to its internal ranking or AI systems, so an external “AI visibility score” is that tool’s own measurement—not an official Google signal. For ChatGPT referrals, OpenAI says referral URLs carry utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can help identify visits in analytics. Server logs can also show crawler requests, but a request is not proof of indexing, citation, or meaningful traffic. See Get started with Search Console and OpenAI’s publisher FAQ.

Prioritize work by whether it removes a concrete barrier: first indexability, then clear textual explanations, then accessible interaction, followed by measurement. If the page is already accessible and understandable, adding speculative AI-specific markup is not an evidence-based substitute for improving the product or its documentation.
