Maker Faire Bay Area’s October return was scheduled for October 13–15 and October 20–22, 2023, at Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo, California. Those dates are past: the July 2023 announcement described a planned relaunch at a new venue, not an upcoming event.
What the July 2023 announcement meant
Make: published Dale Dougherty’s announcement on July 12, 2023. Its “this October” referred to the two weekends of October 13–15 and October 20–22 that year. Maker Faire’s official archived schedule confirms the dates and venue: Maker Faire Bay Area schedule and official event information.
The return marked a move from the earlier San Mateo format to Mare Island Naval Shipyard in Vallejo. Dougherty said organizers wanted to respond to feedback that the previous large event could feel overwhelming. “At Mare Island, our intention is to produce Maker Faire in a smaller footprint while still being engaging and vibrant, full of fun things to see and do,” he wrote. The announcement described the site as having a maximum capacity of 10,000 people; that is a capacity statement, not a count of attendees.

Ideal for open-ended tinkering, maker faires, and advanced DIY robotics showcases.
- Project demonstrations and interactive art installations
- Hands-on workshops
- Maker businesses
- Live music and games
These were categories organizers sought, not a guarantee that every proposed activity appeared in the final program. The archived schedule shows the intended mix in concrete terms: Eben Upton was scheduled to speak about Raspberry Pi, alongside drone demonstrations and an upcycling workshop.
Why the event ran across two weekends
The 2023 plan spread the Faire across two weekends and invited projects able to operate throughout that span. Dougherty’s announcement also welcomed standalone projects that did not require a maker to be present the whole time. The source does not provide a systematic visitor comparison between the San Mateo and Mare Island editions, so the clearest supported distinction is the new venue, smaller-footprint goal, two-weekend schedule, and possibility of rotating maker groups.

What happened after the announcement
The October 2023 dates should not be confused with later editions. Maker Faire’s official 2024 yearbook reports 27,000 attendees and 345 projects for the separate 2024 Bay Area event; those figures do not describe 2023. The official Bay Area page currently lists a 2026 event for September 25–27 at Mare Island. Event schedules and ticket details can change, so consult the official page for current information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDougherty framed the return as a chance to restart and rethink the event, while keeping its maker-centered purpose: “Our goal at Maker Faire, as always, is to showcase the amazing projects of makers and encourage more people to become makers.”
