To make audio pause when you take off your headphones, use a model with wear detection and turn on its auto-pause control in the manufacturer’s app. The setting is specific to the headphones and may not work with every media app. Automatic resume is a separate, model-dependent behavior.
What auto-pause does—and what it does not
On supported headphones and earbuds, a sensor detects when you remove or replace the device and can send a pause command to the connected phone or computer. This is a feature of particular products and their software, not a standard behavior of Bluetooth audio. Whether playback resumes when you put the headphones back on depends on the model and its settings.
TV and streaming-device playback is a different case: pausing is commonly done with a remote or an app control rather than a wear sensor. The instructions below cover both situations.

Turn on wear-detection auto-pause
First confirm that your exact headphone or earbud model supports wear detection. Then use its companion app or the model’s support instructions; these example paths are not universal menus.

Sony headphones
- Open the Sound Connect app.
- Select All device settings, then Controls.
- Enable Pauses when the headphones are taken off.
Sony notes that some music apps may not support automatic playback control. For applicable products, connecting the supplied headphone cable also disables wearing detection. Sony’s support instructions explain the feature and its limitations.
Wyze Buds and headphones
For Wyze Buds, open the Wyze app, select the Buds, open Settings, and turn on Auto Pause. Wyze also documents automatic pause and resume behavior for its headphones; check the instructions for the specific model. Wyze’s Buds instructions and Wyze’s headphone instructions give the relevant steps.

AirPods
AirPods behavior and controls vary by generation and model. Apple’s instructions describe different ways to pause, including removing an earbud or using a stem press on supported models; AirPods Max can pause when removed from the head. Some models also support optional pause when falling asleep while listening through specified Apple devices. Check Apple’s instructions for your model rather than assuming every AirPods feature applies to every generation. Apple’s AirPods user guide describes the available controls.
Fix auto-pause that does not work
- Confirm model support. Check the product’s manual or official support page. A Bluetooth connection alone does not mean the headphones have a wear sensor.
- Check the setting. Make sure auto-pause or wear detection is enabled in the manufacturer’s app, if the model provides a toggle.
- Update the app and headphone firmware. Wyze’s troubleshooting guidance includes updating headphone firmware and confirming that Auto Pause is enabled. See Wyze’s troubleshooting steps.
- Try another supported media app. A sensor can detect removal while the app fails to respond to the playback command. Sony specifically warns that some music apps do not support automatic playback control.
- Check the sensor conditions. Sony cautions that moisture inside the ear pads can slow or prevent detection: “Depending on the humidity inside the ear pads when you remove the headphones, wearing detection may respond slowly or may not detect that the headphones have been removed.”
- Disconnect the supplied cable if applicable. Sony says wear detection is unavailable on applicable headphones while that cable is connected.
If playback pauses but does not resume
Look up the documented behavior for the exact model. A headphone that pauses when removed does not necessarily resume when replaced, and a pause setting does not establish that automatic resume is supported or enabled. Apple’s model-specific controls are one example of why the behavior differs between devices.

Pause a TV or streaming device manually
Android TV remote
While media is playing, press the center button on the remote’s D-pad to pause; press it again to resume. Android TV’s playback instructions describe this control.
Google Media Controls
Google Media Controls can control supported Google streaming devices, Cast-compatible TVs and speakers, and Nest or Home devices. The phone and target device must be on the same Wi-Fi network, and availability is subject to platform restrictions. Google’s Media Controls instructions list setup and compatibility details.

For Android apps that accept playback commands from external controls, Android’s MediaSession provides a playback-control interface. Possible control surfaces include headphones, Assistant, Wear OS, TV, and Android Auto; support depends on the app and device. Android’s MediaSession documentation explains the mechanism.
What to check before choosing headphones
If auto-pause is a buying requirement, verify the feature at the model level rather than relying on a broad product-family name. Check these details in the official product documentation:

- Whether the model detects removal and pauses playback.
- Whether it resumes playback when worn again, and whether that behavior can be changed.
- Whether the feature has an on/off control in the companion app.
- Which firmware, phone platform, and media apps are supported.
- What manual button, touch, or remote controls are available if detection does not work.
The documented examples establish that these controls differ by product, but they do not establish a market-wide reliability ranking or measured sensor-accuracy comparison. Confirm current support details for the exact model before buying.
