Plasma Firewall gives KDE users a firewall settings page inside System Settings, but it does not replace the firewall itself. It is a graphical front end for an installed UFW or firewalld backend. KDE described the module as a simplified way to configure those backends when it announced Plasma 5.21 in 2021; whether it is “better” than another firewall GUI depends on how much control you need.

What Plasma Firewall does

Plasma Firewall is a KDE System Settings module for configuring an existing Linux firewall. KDE’s Plasma 5.21 announcement says it provides a simplified way to configure UFW and firewalld. The module is a control panel, not a separate firewall that independently filters network traffic. KDE’s Plasma 5.21 announcement describes the original release, while the project repository identifies UFW or firewalld as dependencies.

That distinction matters: the backend applies firewall rules, and the KDE module provides a desktop interface to manage it. Your Linux distribution determines which backend and graphical tools are installed or available. The cited KDE material does not establish current package names, defaults, or installation steps for particular distributions, so check your distribution’s documentation before installing or changing firewall software.

How it compares with firewalld’s own GUI

firewalld is a firewall backend; firewall-config is a separate graphical configuration program for it. The firewalld manual describes firewall-config as a GUI configuration tool. Plasma Firewall’s distinguishing point is KDE integration: it is accessed as a System Settings module rather than as a separate application.

The firewalld project documents network zones, which associate a trust level with networks and their connections, interfaces, or sources. It also distinguishes runtime settings from permanent settings. These are firewalld concepts that help explain why its own tool can involve more configuration detail than a simplified desktop panel; the available sources do not establish a control-by-control comparison of the two interfaces.

For firewalld’s own explanation of its zone model and capabilities, see the firewalld documentation. Its manual documents firewall-config as a GUI for the backend. The presence of more concepts in firewalld does not by itself show that one interface is superior for every user.

Is Plasma Firewall “way better”?

A Yahoo-hosted search result for a ZDNET article by Jack Wallen, dated September 24, 2026, characterizes Plasma Firewall as easier to use than the default firewalld GUI and notes its integration into Settings. The article page was not accessible for independent review, so that characterization should be treated as the article’s claim rather than a verified, comprehensive comparison.

KDE itself called the Plasma 5.21 module a “simplified way” to configure UFW and firewalld. That supports describing its intended appeal as a more integrated, simplified interface, but does not establish that it exposes every option available through firewalld’s own tool or that all users will find it better. If you want a settings page within KDE for common firewall configuration, integration may be an advantage. If you need to work directly with firewalld’s zone and runtime-versus-permanent model, consult firewalld’s documentation and choose a tool that exposes the controls you need.

Another firewalld GUI to know about

Cinderward is a separate project that describes itself as a GUI for firewalld, with zone-based controls for services, ports, and forwarding. Its repository lists Nitrux 5.1.0 or newer and firewalld 2.3.1 or newer among its requirements. Those requirements make it a project to investigate in the context of its stated environment, not a universal recommendation for KDE or other distributions. See the Cinderward repository for its project details.
