To make Google Calendar the destination for new events on an iPhone, add your Google account to Apple’s Calendar app, turn on calendar syncing, and choose the Google calendar in Settings > Apps > Calendar > Default Calendar. New events created in Apple Calendar will then be saved there automatically.
This setting does not replace Apple Calendar as the iPhone’s system calendar app. Apple documents a separate Default Apps menu for categories such as browsers, email and calling; Calendar is not one of those categories. If you want Google’s interface to open and manage events, use the Google Calendar app itself.
What “default Google Calendar” means on an iPhone
iPhone has two different ideas that are often confused:
- Default Calendar destination: the calendar account that receives new events created in Apple’s Calendar app.
- Default calendar application: the app that opens whenever a calendar link or calendar action is tapped.
The first option is available. You can select a Google calendar as Apple Calendar’s default destination. The second option is not documented as an iPhone default-app category. Apple’s list includes email, messaging, calling, browser, translation, passwords and codes, contactless apps and keyboards, but not Calendar. Therefore, selecting a Google calendar does not make Google Calendar the system-wide calendar app.

When you create an event afterward in Apple Calendar, the event is assigned to the selected Google calendar unless you change the calendar in that event’s composer. You can move an event later if it was initially saved somewhere else.
Before you change the setting
Have the Google account credentials available and decide which calendar should receive ordinary appointments. A Google account can contain several calendars, so the setting may show more than one choice after syncing is enabled.
- Use an iPhone with the Google account added under Calendar Accounts.
- Make sure the account’s Calendars switch is enabled.
- Know whether you want to keep using Apple Calendar or switch to Google’s own app.
- If several accounts are on the phone, identify the exact calendar name you want to select.
You do not need a hardware accessory, repair tool or physical manual. This is an account and settings change.

Set a Google calendar as the destination for new iPhone events
- Open Settings. On the iPhone, launch the Settings app.
- Open Calendar’s account controls. Tap Apps, then Calendar, then Calendar Accounts.
- Add Google if necessary. Tap Add Account, choose Google, and sign in to the Google account that owns the calendar you want to use.
- Allow calendar synchronization. If iPhone asks which Google services to sync, make sure Calendars is turned on. Finish the account setup.
- Open the default-calendar selector. Return to Settings > Apps > Calendar, then tap Default Calendar.
- Select the Google calendar. Tap the specific Google calendar that should receive new events. If the account has multiple calendars, select the one intended for routine appointments rather than assuming the account name alone identifies the destination.
- Create a test event. Open Apple Calendar, create a short test event, and inspect the event’s calendar field before saving. After saving, verify that the event appears in the selected Google calendar.
Apple says events created after this selection are added to the chosen default calendar automatically. The setting affects new events; it does not reorganize older events that already exist in another calendar.
If the Google account is already on the iPhone
You do not need to remove and re-add an account merely because Google is not appearing as a calendar choice. Open Settings > Apps > Calendar > Calendar Accounts, tap the existing Google account and check that Calendars is enabled. Return to Settings > Apps > Calendar > Default Calendar and look for the Google calendar again.
An account can remain signed in for other services while calendar synchronization is disabled. In that state, the account may not appear as an available destination in Apple Calendar. Enabling the Calendars switch makes its calendars available to the app.
Check that new events are going to Google
After selecting the default, create an event from Apple Calendar rather than from the Google Calendar app. In the event editor, inspect the calendar name. It should show the Google calendar you selected. Save the event, then check the Google Calendar app or Google Calendar on the web.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Also revisit Settings > Apps > Calendar > Default Calendar; a different account may have been selected, or the Google calendar may have been disabled and re-enabled.

The default is a destination preference, not a lock. Apple Calendar still lets you choose another calendar for an individual event, and an event can be moved after creation.
Choose the workflow that fits how you use calendars
| What you want | Recommended setup | What opens and where events go |
|---|---|---|
| Keep Apple’s interface but store new events in Google | Add or enable the Google account, then select its calendar under Default Calendar. | Apple Calendar remains the interface; new events created there go to the selected Google calendar. |
| Use Google’s interface for creating and managing events | Install or open Google Calendar from the App Store and sign in. | Google Calendar is the interface you open manually. Its events sync when the same Google account is used on your devices. |
| See Google events inside Apple Calendar | Add the Google account to Apple Calendar and enable Calendars. | Google events are displayed in Apple Calendar, but some Google-specific functions are unavailable there. |
| Use both apps | Keep the account synced to Apple Calendar and also sign in to Google Calendar. | Both apps can display the account’s events. Review notification settings to avoid duplicate alerts. |
When Google Calendar’s own app is the better choice
Selecting a Google calendar as Apple Calendar’s default destination is useful when you prefer Apple’s built-in interface, widgets or event composer but want the data stored in Google. It does not add Google-only controls to Apple Calendar.
Google’s mobile guidance presents its own iPhone app as the easiest way to keep Google Calendar synchronized with a computer. Open the App Store, download Google Calendar, launch it and sign in to the same Google account used on the iPhone. Use that app when you need Google’s interface or account-specific controls.

Google notes that some features do not work when a Google account is used through Apple Calendar:
- Event email notifications are not available there.
- You cannot create new Google calendars from Apple Calendar.
- Room Scheduler is not available in Apple Calendar.
Those limitations do not prevent ordinary event creation, viewing and synchronization. They do mean that a user who relies on any listed feature should open Google Calendar for that task.
Understand account and calendar selection
A Google account and a Google calendar are not always the same thing. One account can own or subscribe to multiple calendars. The Default Calendar screen selects a particular calendar, not merely “Google” in the abstract.
If an event is saved to a calendar that is not associated with the Google account you expect, Google warns that it may not appear in Google Calendar or at calendar.google.com. Check the calendar field before saving an important appointment. This is especially important when iCloud, work, school and personal accounts are all present.
In the Google Calendar app, use the account-switching controls to confirm that the correct Google account is active and that the relevant calendar is visible. A calendar can be synchronized but hidden from the app’s display list, which can make a correctly saved event appear to be missing.

Use a deliberate test instead of guessing
A two-minute test can identify whether the problem is account setup, calendar selection or display. First, note the exact calendar name shown in Apple Calendar’s event editor. Create a uniquely named event, such as “Calendar test,” for a near-term time. Save it, then look for that same name in the Google Calendar app while the intended account is selected. Finally, check calendar.google.com if the app view is ambiguous.
If the event is present on the web but not in the iPhone app, check whether that calendar is hidden in the app’s calendar list or whether another Google account is active. If it appears in Apple Calendar but nowhere under the Google account, inspect its calendar field; it may have been saved to iCloud or a work account. This test is safer than creating an important appointment and assuming it synced.
Moving an event that was saved to the wrong calendar
Changing the default does not migrate events already created. Open the event in Apple Calendar, tap its calendar field, choose the intended Google calendar and save the change. For a new event, choose the Google calendar before saving. If an event belongs to a calendar that is not connected to the expected Google account, changing the destination is necessary before it can appear in that account’s Google Calendar.

Troubleshoot the most common problems
Google does not appear under Default Calendar
- Go to Settings > Apps > Calendar > Calendar Accounts.
- Tap the Google account and turn on Calendars.
- Return to Settings > Apps > Calendar > Default Calendar.
- If several calendars are listed, look for the individual Google calendar rather than only the account label.
This sequence follows Apple’s account setup and Google’s instruction to enable calendar synchronization for an existing account. If more than one Google account is present, open each account entry and verify which one owns the calendar you want.
New events still go to the wrong account
Open the event composer and inspect its calendar field. The event may be using an explicitly selected calendar rather than the default. If the field is correct but later events continue going elsewhere, check the Default Calendar setting again and confirm that the intended Google account remains enabled under Calendar Accounts.
Older events are missing in the Google Calendar app
Google’s troubleshooting guidance says the iPhone Google Calendar app synchronizes past events for up to one year. Events older than that may not appear in the app. For older records, visit calendar.google.com. This one-year limitation concerns the Google app’s past-event synchronization; it is separate from choosing a default destination in Apple Calendar.

Events appear in Apple Calendar but not Google Calendar
Check which calendar actually owns the event. If it was saved to an iCloud, work or other non-Google calendar, it will not automatically become a Google event. Edit the event, choose the intended Google calendar and save, or create a new event after confirming the Google calendar is selected.

Notifications arrive twice
Running both apps can produce alerts from each app for the same calendar. Google advises changing notification settings in the relevant calendar app when alerts arrive from more than one app. Decide which app should notify you for each calendar, then disable or reduce duplicate alerts in the other app’s notification settings.
A Google calendar is visible but cannot be selected
Return to the Google account entry under Calendar Accounts and verify that Calendars is still enabled. Then check the calendar’s visibility in the app you are using. If you switch between multiple Google accounts, confirm that the selected calendar belongs to the account currently displayed.
The setting seems to revert
Reopen Default Calendar and record the exact selected calendar, not just its color or account grouping. A calendar may have been disabled and later re-enabled, or another account may have become the selected destination. Create one more test event after correcting the selection. The event’s calendar field is the definitive check for that individual event.

Which setup should you use?
Choose Apple Calendar as the working app
Use this arrangement if you want one iPhone-native calendar view and simply need new events stored in Google. Add the account, enable Calendars and select the Google calendar as the default destination. This is also the simplest setup when you want Apple Calendar’s event-entry flow but need the same Google data available on a computer.
Choose Google Calendar as the working app
Use Google’s app if you need event email notifications, creation of new Google calendars, Room Scheduler or Google’s own interface. Sign in with the account that should manage the events and keep the relevant calendars visible. Opening Google Calendar directly is different from changing Apple Calendar’s destination setting.
Use both deliberately
Some people view events in Apple Calendar but open Google Calendar for Google-specific tasks. This is workable, but decide which app should send alerts. Otherwise, the same event can trigger notifications from both applications. Also check the active account before troubleshooting: an event can be correctly synced to one Google account while you are viewing another.

- It does not convert existing iCloud, work or personal events into Google events.
- It does not make Google Calendar the iPhone’s system-wide default app.
- It does not provide Google-only features inside Apple Calendar.
- It does not prevent you from assigning an individual event to another calendar.
- It does not guarantee that every older event will be shown in the Google Calendar iPhone app; Google documents a one-year past-event synchronization window there.
- It does not choose among multiple Google calendars for you; you must select the specific calendar shown in Default Calendar.
The setting has one precise purpose: it chooses the calendar destination for new events created in Apple Calendar.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I make Google Calendar open automatically when I tap a calendar link on iPhone?
Not through the Default Calendar setting. That setting chooses where new Apple Calendar events are saved. Apple’s documented default-app categories do not include Calendar, so use the Google Calendar app directly when you want Google’s interface.
Best Value
Why is Google missing from the Default Calendar list?
Go to Settings > Apps > Calendar > Calendar Accounts, open the Google account and enable Calendars. Then return to Default Calendar. If several calendars exist, select the individual Google calendar rather than the account name.
Will changing the default move my old iPhone events to Google?
No. It affects events created afterward. Edit an existing event and change its calendar to the intended Google calendar, or create a replacement event there.
Can I use Apple Calendar and Google Calendar at the same time?
Yes. Keep the Google account synchronized with Apple Calendar and sign in to the Google Calendar app. Choose one app’s notification settings deliberately to avoid duplicate alerts.
Why does an event show in Apple Calendar but not Google Calendar?
Check the event’s calendar field. It may belong to iCloud, a work account or another calendar not associated with the Google account you are viewing. Also confirm the correct Google account is active and that the calendar is visible in Google Calendar.
Does Apple Calendar support Google event email notifications or Room Scheduler?
Google says those features are unavailable when the account is used through Apple Calendar. Open Google Calendar for event email notifications, creating new Google calendars or Room Scheduler.
How far back does the Google Calendar iPhone app sync events?
Google’s troubleshooting guidance says the iPhone app syncs past events for up to one year. For older events, use calendar.google.com. This limitation is separate from selecting a default destination in Apple Calendar.
The Bottom Line
Add or enable your Google account in Apple Calendar, then choose the specific Google calendar under Settings > Apps > Calendar > Default Calendar. That makes Google the destination for new Apple Calendar events, but it does not replace Apple Calendar as the iPhone’s default app. Use Google Calendar itself for Google-only features and check the event’s calendar field whenever an appointment appears to be missing.
