To use F1–F12 without holding Fn, change which top-row action is the default on your keyboard. Check first for a manufacturer-documented Fn Lock shortcut; if your model has none, look for a function-key or hotkey setting in BIOS/UEFI. Windows does not have a universal Fn control established by the manufacturer guidance cited here, and the correct shortcut and setting vary by device.

What changing the Fn behavior does

A laptop’s top row may offer standard F1–F12 commands as well as secondary actions such as volume or brightness. The Fn setting determines which of those behaviors happens when you press a top-row key by itself. Changing the default does not remove either function; it changes which one is primary and whether Fn is needed to access the other.

First decide which behavior you want on a plain keypress: the standard F1–F12 command used by applications, or the icon-marked hotkey action. The steps below focus on making standard F1–F12 commands the default.

Try the device’s documented Fn Lock shortcut

  1. Look across the keyboard for a key marked Fn Lock or a lock icon.
  2. Check the manual or support page for your exact computer or keyboard to find the documented toggle. Press that key or combination, then test a top-row key.
  3. Do not assume Fn + Esc works on every computer. ASUS documents that combination for covered notebook keyboards, but cautions that steps can vary by product and software version. See ASUS’s keyboard guidance.

Fn Lock behavior is device-specific. For example, the service manual for the Dell Latitude 7424 Rugged Extreme says activating Fn Lock makes secondary top-row functions the default. That example does not establish the same shortcut or behavior for other Dell models.

Change the setting in BIOS/UEFI if there is no shortcut

  1. Use your computer maker’s instructions to restart into BIOS/UEFI. The key or startup procedure varies by model.
  2. Inspect keyboard, system-configuration, or hotkey menus for a setting named something like Action Keys Mode, Hotkey Mode, or Function Key Behavior.
  3. Read the setting’s on-screen description before changing it. The labels and the meaning of Enabled or Disabled differ between manufacturers and models. Choose the option that makes standard F1–F12 commands work without Fn.
  4. Save the change and restart if prompted. Test the keys in the application where you need them.

For many notebooks, HP documents Action Keys Mode in BIOS Setup: Enabled makes the printed action-key functions work without Fn, while Disabled makes Fn necessary for those actions and leaves standard function-key behavior primary. HP also documents different menu routes for some product families, so use the instructions for your model at HP Support.

Lenovo describes a BIOS Hotkey Mode setting for applicable Lenovo and Think-branded devices, including ideapad and ThinkPad families. The intended default depends on whether you want hotkeys or standard F-keys to take priority, and the option may not be present on every device. Check the exact model’s instructions at Lenovo Support; the page also advises checking the product support page for BIOS updates if Hotkey Mode is unavailable.

Check external keyboards separately

An external keyboard may have its own Fn or F Lock behavior, independent of the laptop’s built-in keyboard. Microsoft’s guidance covers its accessories: keyboards with an F Lock key can toggle between standard and alternate commands, and the All-in-One Media Keyboard uses Fn + Caps Lock to toggle Fn Lock. Those instructions are accessory-specific, not a universal setting for laptop keyboards. See Microsoft Support.

If F1–F12 still do not work as expected

  • Recheck the intended default: Your change may have made volume or brightness the primary action instead of standard F-keys. Consult the device’s description of the setting and select the opposite behavior if needed.
  • Confirm the exact model: A shortcut or BIOS menu documented for another device may not exist on yours. Look up the full model number on the manufacturer’s support site or in its manual.
  • Restore the previous setting if necessary: If the change causes an unexpected result, return to the same BIOS/UEFI option and restore its original value.
  • Keep the keyboard in view: If you are using an external keyboard, check its own manual and toggle rather than assuming the laptop’s Fn setting controls it.

Fn is implemented differently across keyboards, as also noted in this Microsoft Learn Q&A. The maker’s instructions for the specific device are the best basis for its shortcut and settings.
