Majora’s Mask makes exploration a race against a clock that keeps moving; The Blood of Dawnwalker makes it a set of choices about which actions are worth spending time on. In Nintendo’s manual, the first game’s three-day cycle lasts 72 in-game hours and can be rewound with the Song of Time. In Bandai Namco’s official descriptions of the second, roaming and observing do not advance the 30-day deadline, but quests and selected actions do. That difference changes what planning means in each game.
How does Majora’s Mask’s three-day time limit work?
In the Nintendo 64 version documented by Nintendo’s manual, in-game time advances continuously except during conversations and while the game is paused. Each cycle lasts three days—72 in-game hours—and the manual warns that the game ends if those hours pass without using the Song of Time or Ocarina of Time. The deadline is therefore present even when Link is not taking a specific quest action: the player has to account for the clock while moving through the world and its events.
Playing the Song of Time sends Link through a time vortex back to 6:00 a.m. on the first day. Nintendo describes the three-day system as one in which players control time and repeat days to complete the adventure, so the cycle is not merely a story countdown. It is part of the game’s progression structure: players learn when things happen, decide what to attempt in the current cycle, then use a reset to plan another run. Nintendo’s Majora’s Mask manual and its Iwata Asks interview describe these mechanics and the repeating-day design.

What progress carries over when you play the Song of Time?
A reset does not preserve every task, but it is not a complete restart either. Nintendo’s manual says masks, songs and items listed on the Quest Status Screen, notebook notes, maps, dungeon maps and compasses, and deposited rupees are saved. Among the things that are lost are cleared maze puzzles, sub-events, conversations, keys, stray fairies and rupees Link is carrying.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
This selective persistence gives repeated exploration a purpose. Knowledge and certain collected tools can support future attempts, while many local accomplishments must be completed again. The player can use what was learned about a schedule or location to make a better plan, rather than treating each cycle as an entirely new save.
Does exploration advance time in The Blood of Dawnwalker?
According to Bandai Namco and Rebel Wolves’ official descriptions, free roaming and observation do not move the day forward. Players can wander, watch and listen, and then choose when to take actions that spend time. The gameplay reveal recap illustrates the distinction: the player investigated a burning house in real time without advancing in-world time. In a PlayStation Blog feature, creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz put it this way: “Roaming the open world does not advance time, giving you the freedom to explore without pressure.” That is the developer’s description of the intended mechanic and feel, not a measured claim about how every player will experience it.

The deadline still matters. Bandai Namco says Coen has 30 days to prevent his family’s execution, and official descriptions identify quests and selected major actions as ways time advances. A separate PlayStation Blog feature says quests can be done in different orders, skipped or left undiscovered. Exploration therefore has two distinct modes: gathering information without spending time, and committing to actions that may use part of the limited window.

What kinds of choices spend time?
PlayStation’s April 2026 feature says some side quests, dialogue choices and skill learning have visible time costs. That makes the clock an opportunity-cost system: an action may be worth doing, but it uses time that could have gone to another quest or decision. The sources do not establish that every conversation or activity costs time, so the mechanic should not be read as a universal charge for interacting with the world.
Developer comments describe consequences rather than an automatic game over when the deadline runs out. Game director Konrad Tomaszkiewicz said, “We don’t want to punish you for doing stuff,” and lead quest designer Rafał Jankowski said time pressure “made many of the game’s stories optional.” These are statements about design intent; they are not independent player testing or a guarantee that every missed objective is consequence-free. See PlayStation’s article on choices and consequences.

How do the time limits change exploration?
| Exploration question | Majora’s Mask | The Blood of Dawnwalker |
|---|---|---|
| What advances time? | Continuous in-game time except during conversations and while paused, according to Nintendo’s manual. | Quests and selected actions; official descriptions say roaming and observing do not advance time. PlayStation Blog. |
| How is the limit framed? | A repeating three-day, 72-in-game-hour cycle, with the moon falling if the player does not reset in time. Nintendo’s manual. | A 30-day deadline to prevent Coen’s family’s execution. Bandai Namco. |
| What does planning ask of you? | Fit scheduled activities into a moving clock, choose what to accomplish before the cycle ends, and use resets to attempt more. | Choose which time-costing actions and quests to pursue; use non-advancing roaming and observation to explore before committing. |
| What happens to progress? | Song of Time returns Link to the first morning. Specific progress persists, while many event and carried-resource gains are lost; Nintendo lists the categories in its manual. | The cited official descriptions emphasize choices, consequences and optional or missed quests; they do not describe an equivalent universal rewind. |
| Where is the pressure? | In the immediate, continuously advancing clock and the need to plan around recurring events. | In the opportunity cost of choosing actions while a narrative deadline approaches. |
The key distinction is the trigger and reset behavior, not simply that both games display a deadline. Majora’s Mask makes ordinary passage through the world part of the pressure, then gives players a repeatable reset with selective persistence. The Blood of Dawnwalker separates roaming from time-spending actions, making the player’s commitments the main source of pressure. Neither description establishes which system players find more stressful or enjoyable; they are different design approaches to structuring exploration.

Nintendo’s manual is for the Nintendo 64 game; Nintendo’s game page identifies the Nintendo 64 title and notes a separate 3DS version. The mechanics described here should not be treated as a version-by-version comparison. The official PlayStation Store listing names The Blood of Dawnwalker for PS5 and gives September 3, 2026 as its release date; its listing also says that taking a quest moves time forward. That is platform and release information from the listing, not evidence about player reactions. Nintendo’s game page and the PlayStation Store listing provide those product details.
