MAINGEAR lets customers supply compatible RAM for a new custom PC order, and the company installs, tests, and tunes it before shipping. The option can lower the configured system price, but it is not a way to buy a RAM-free PC: MAINGEAR says memory must be installed so it can validate the completed system.
What MAINGEAR’s BYO RAM option includes
With the program, you provide compatible memory for a new MAINGEAR PC. The company says it will install the RAM, test system stability, and tune settings for performance and reliability. The option is limited to memory; you cannot supply the GPU, motherboard, or other components.
MAINGEAR says the service has no additional fee and that providing RAM reduces the system purchase price. The exact reduction depends on the configuration and current pricing; the program page does not promise a fixed saving. Check the current system configurator and program details at MAINGEAR’s BYO RAM page.

You can send compatible memory you already own or have newly purchased memory delivered to MAINGEAR. The company says it can provide a prepaid envelope for fast two-day shipping. It accepts new or used RAM and says buyers may send multiple kits so it can test them and select the best fit. Confirm the current shipping instructions with MAINGEAR before sending a kit.
#1 Best Overall
- Requires overclocking/BIOS adjustments. Maximum speed and performance depends on system components, including motherboard and CPU.
- G.SKILL Flare X5 Series DDR5 U-DIMM Memory Kit, Model: F5-6000J3636F16GX2-FX5
- Non-ECC, DDR5 U-DIMM, 288-pin, for Desktop PC & Gaming
- Includes JEDEC default profile, and AMD EXPO & Intel XMP 3.0 memory overclock profile
- Do not mix memory kits. Memory kits are sold in matched kits that are designed to run together as a set. Mixing memory kits will result in stability issues or system failure.
Why you cannot order the PC without RAM
MAINGEAR says it needs memory installed to validate stability and optimize the system before shipment. Its explanation is direct: “To ship a fully tested, optimized system, we need memory installed before it leaves MAINGEAR.” So if you want to use your own RAM, follow the BYO process; otherwise, choose memory supplied by MAINGEAR. The PC is not shipped as a barebones system for you to add RAM later.
Check compatibility before sending memory
MAINGEAR says its current platforms use DDR5, not DDR3 or DDR4. But DDR5 alone does not establish compatibility. The required module type and supported capacity and speed depend on the specific PC’s motherboard, processor, and memory controller.

| System type | Memory type to check | Important distinction |
|---|---|---|
| AMD Ryzen and Intel Core Ultra gaming PCs | Desktop UDIMM | Do not substitute RDIMM or laptop SODIMM. |
| Some AMD Threadripper or Intel Xeon workstations | RDIMM may be required | RDIMM and UDIMM are not interchangeable; confirm the exact workstation specification. |
| Laptops | SODIMM | Laptop SODIMM and desktop modules are not interchangeable. |
MAINGEAR describes two matched sticks as the usual choice for dual-channel operation. Mixed-capacity sticks are not accepted, and a single stick may reduce performance. Non-binary capacities can require extra compatibility checks. Very high-speed kits may need tuning or a speed adjustment to run reliably.

- Confirm the exact system’s supported memory type, total capacity, speed, and number of modules before ordering or mailing RAM.
- Do not assume a kit works just because it is DDR5 or was stable in another computer.
- If you are considering multiple kits, ask MAINGEAR which configurations it will test for the selected system.
How much can BYO RAM save?
The amount is not fixed. MAINGEAR says the system price falls when you provide memory, but its program page does not state a universal dollar saving. Compare the current configurator price with the cost of buying compatible RAM—or the value of reusing a kit you already own—before deciding.

MAINGEAR also says, “Many DDR5 kits are seeing 100% to 400+% price increases.” That is the company’s undated claim; the program page does not identify a market dataset, measurement period, or calculation method. It should not be read as an independently verified market-wide statistic.
For context, PCWorld reported on December 24, 2025, that PCPartPicker tracking showed a sharp October-to-December 2025 rise for a 64GB DDR5-6000 kit. That is a dated secondary report, not a current price quote. TechRadar reported at launch that omitting a 32GB DDR5 configuration reduced a quoted system price by $300. That was a historical, configuration-specific example—not a guaranteed saving today.

What happens if the RAM fails testing?
MAINGEAR says it will explain the issue and provide alternatives if a supplied kit fails testing. It also says it can assist with a manufacturer warranty claim when applicable. The RAM retains its manufacturer warranty; MAINGEAR’s system warranty and lifetime support are stated to remain unaffected.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →There is a practical trade-off in sending memory: you must account for packing, transit, and the possibility of shipping loss. PCWorld raised that general concern, but the available reports do not establish a loss rate or a MAINGEAR-specific shipping incident. MAINGEAR says canceled orders receive free return shipping for the RAM.
Choose BYO or MAINGEAR-supplied RAM
| Consideration | BYO RAM | MAINGEAR-supplied RAM |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Compare the configurator reduction with your all-in cost to buy or reuse compatible memory. | Included in the configured PC price; the current price depends on the selected system and memory. |
| Compatibility | You need to confirm the kit matches the selected platform; MAINGEAR says it tests and tunes supplied RAM. | Memory is selected as part of the system configuration. |
| Convenience | Requires arranging delivery of your own or separately purchased kit. | No separate memory shipment is needed. |
| Support and testing | MAINGEAR says it installs and validates the supplied memory; the RAM’s manufacturer warranty remains in effect. | Memory is installed as part of the configured system. |
BYO RAM is most compelling when you already own a suitable kit or can source one for less than the current configurator reduction, and you are comfortable arranging delivery. Choosing MAINGEAR-supplied memory is simpler if compatibility checks or shipping logistics outweigh a possible saving. In either case, verify current eligibility, savings, and shipping directions on the official program page before placing the order.
