Choose based on the phone and features you need: standard Qi is a sensible basic option for broad compatibility; MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic charging system; and Qi2 supports both magnetic and non-magnetic profiles. If magnetic attachment matters, check that a Qi2 charger specifically supports its Magnetic Power Profile (MPP)—the Qi2 label alone does not guarantee magnets. For the highest supported charging rate, match the exact phone, charger and power adapter rather than relying on a charger’s headline wattage.

MagSafe, Qi2 and Qi compared

Standard What it means What to check before buying
Standard Qi The Wireless Power Consortium’s (WPC) wireless charging standard. Apple says iPhone 8 and later can charge with Qi-certified chargers; many Qi chargers charge iPhone at up to 7.5 watts, though performance varies. Apple’s Qi charging guidance Confirm the charger is certified and that its capabilities suit your phone. It is a reasonable choice for basic charging if you do not need magnetic attachment.
Qi2 A family of profiles introduced by WPC. The Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) enables magnetic alignment and is based on MagSafe technology contributed by Apple. Qi2 also includes the non-magnetic Enhanced Power Profile (EPP). WPC’s Qi v2.0 description If you want a magnetic connection, check that the particular charger supports MPP and verify its certification record. A Qi2 label by itself does not establish magnetic attachment.
MagSafe Apple’s magnetic charging system. Apple specifies model- and adapter-dependent peak power; the Apple MagSafe Charger is also listed by WPC as an MPP product. Apple’s MagSafe guidance · WPC’s MagSafe Charger record Check the exact iPhone model, charger and power adapter requirements. Confirm that your case allows the magnetic connection you want.

WPC announced Qi2 in 2023 with an original standard power level of 15 watts. In July 2025, it announced Qi2 25W for Qi v2.2.1, describing it as offering nearly 70% more power than original Qi2. Those are standard-level capability figures, not promises of a particular phone’s charging speed or a measured increase in charging time. WPC’s Qi2 25W announcement

Which one should you buy?

Choose standard Qi for uncomplicated charging

A certified Qi pad suits basic charging when magnetic attachment and a higher supported rate are not priorities. Apple says iPhone 8 and later can use Qi-certified chargers, but the phone and charger determine performance. Search the exact charger model in WPC’s certified product database rather than relying only on a retailer’s description.

Choose MagSafe for an iPhone and Apple’s magnetic system

Pick a qualifying MagSafe Charger when you want Apple’s magnetic alignment and want to follow Apple’s model-specific guidance for peak power. The rate depends on the iPhone and adapter; a charger’s maximum rating alone does not guarantee that a particular phone will reach it.

Choose Qi2 MPP for magnetic charging across compatible products

A Qi2 charger is a magnetic option only if its product supports MPP. Check the charger’s WPC record and the phone maker’s specifications, then confirm that your case and intended setup preserve the magnetic connection. Qi2 products using EPP do not provide MPP’s magnetic alignment.

Choose by your actual use, not the largest wattage on the box

  • Basic pad charging: certified standard Qi may be enough.
  • Magnetic attachment or a stand: verify MagSafe or Qi2 MPP support on both the charger and compatible phone setup.
  • Highest supported peak rate: use the phone maker’s current instructions for the model, charger and adapter.

How much power will your iPhone actually receive?

Published peak rates vary by model and accessories. Apple’s MagSafe support page, published March 31, 2026, lists the following peak power under its specified charger and adapter conditions. These are Apple specifications, not independently measured charging times.

Check these details before you buy

  1. Identify the exact phone model. Look up its supported charging standards and model-specific power guidance; support and peak rates differ even among phones in the same family.
  2. Decide whether you need magnets. For MagSafe, follow Apple’s compatibility guidance. For Qi2, confirm MPP specifically rather than inferring magnetic attachment from the Qi2 name.
  3. Check the case and setup. Confirm that your case and intended arrangement work with the magnetic system you plan to use.
  4. Match the adapter to the charger and phone. Read the manufacturer’s required wattage and output details, and check whether the adapter is included. Apple conditions some higher MagSafe peaks on using a suitable adapter.
  5. Verify certification. Search the exact charger model in WPC’s certified product database. WPC says certified products receive an ID and are listed there.
  6. Compare the real use case. A stand, magnetic attachment and charging while using the phone may be more important to you than a higher maximum wattage.

Does Qi2 mean the same thing as MagSafe?

No. MagSafe is Apple’s magnetic charging system. Qi2 includes MPP, which enables magnetic alignment and is based on MagSafe technology contributed to WPC, but Qi2 also includes a non-magnetic profile. A Qi2 charger is not necessarily a MagSafe charger, and a Qi2 label alone does not tell you whether the product attaches magnetically. Check its profile and its compatibility with your phone.

What charging-speed claims can—and cannot—tell you

A charger’s advertised wattage describes a capability, not a guaranteed rate for every phone. The phone must support the relevant profile, and the charger and adapter must meet the manufacturer’s conditions. Apple’s published MagSafe peaks are model-specific and subject to system conditions.

WPC’s original Qi2 launch announcement and Qi2 25W announcement describe the standards’ capabilities and performance claims. They do not establish a controlled, independent comparison of charging time, heat or energy consumption across representative Qi, Qi2 and MagSafe charger-and-phone combinations. Do not treat the difference between nominal wattages—or WPC’s nearly 70% figure—as proof that a phone will charge that much faster.
