Magnetized body hair can create an added tactile sensation, but it does not give people a proven, innate ability to sense magnetic fields. The experimental M-Hair method coats body hair with magnetically responsive material, then uses an external magnetic field to move the hairs and produce touch-like feedback without directly touching the skin.
What “sixth sense” means here
The phrase is metaphorical: M-Hair aims to augment touch by making body hair respond to an externally generated magnetic field. The available descriptions do not establish that untreated human body hair detects magnetic fields or that people naturally have the magnetic sense suggested by a literal reading of the headline.
How the M-Hair method works
- Add magnetic material to a hair product. The SIGGRAPH Asia paper describes mixing a product such as gel with magnetically responsive particles, such as iron. Read the paper’s description of M-Hair.
- Apply the mixture to body hair. The coating makes the hairs responsive to an external magnetic field.
- Move the hairs with a magnetic field. An electromagnet or permanent magnet can actuate the coated hair. The resulting movement stimulates the hairs rather than directly pressing on the skin.
The Augmented Human Lab describes M-Hair as “a novel method for providing tactile feedback by stimulating only the body hair.” The lab’s M-Hair project page also lists the 2019 work and a later related MAGHair wearable-system publication.
What the sensation may communicate
The lab’s account points to a distinction between feeling something and identifying exactly what it represents. It says: “Our user study suggested that the value of the M-hair mechanism is in inducing affective sensations such as pleasantness, rather than effectively discriminating features such as shape, size, and direction.” In other words, the method may be more useful for producing a subtle or pleasant tactile effect than for reliably conveying precise spatial information.

What the demonstration showed—and did not show
Hackster’s report describes a demonstration using magnetic paste on participants’ forearm hair and a modified engraver with a rare-earth magnet in place of its laser. According to that report, participants could recognize simple shapes and motions, but complex shapes were not identified accurately or consistently; the sensation was described as subtle. Those apparatus and participant details are Hackster’s description of the demonstration, not a complete account of the academic study. The sources reviewed do not establish a defensible participant count, quantified recognition rates, or safety findings for applying the experimental mixture to body hair. They also do not establish that M-Hair is a consumer-ready wearable.

What M-Hair does not prove
- It does not show that natural, untreated body hair can detect magnetic fields.
- It does not demonstrate dependable recognition of complex shapes or precise direction, size, or position.
- It is not evidence that people possess an innate magnetic sense.
- It is not a validated at-home treatment or a recommendation to put experimental magnetic mixtures on your skin or hair.
M-Hair is best understood as experimental tactile-interface research: magnetic actuation moves treated hair to create an additional sensation, with the lab identifying affective feedback as a more promising direction than reliable feature discrimination.
