Wizards of the Coast says an external service disruption affected systems supporting the Secret Lair x MSCHF: The Zeta Set launch; it was not simply a case of demand exhausting the stock faster than expected. The company says checkout strain led it to pause the queue, but after the backlog was processed, inventory was far closer to sold out than its initial reports suggested. Wizards announced a new 24-hour order window for December 9, 2026, and says every order placed during that window will be fulfilled.
Why did the Zeta Set sale go wrong?
In its October 1, 2026 update, Wizards of the Coast said Secret Lair’s processing partner led an investigation into the launch. The finding reported by Wizards was that an external service disruption early in the sale affected systems supporting it. The company characterized the incident as more than a straightforward sellout caused by unexpectedly high demand.
Wizards did not name the external service or publish technical details or an independent technical report. The cause and investigation findings here are therefore the company’s account.

What happened to the queue and inventory?
Wizards says backend systems became strained, and Matthew Hodgins, the update’s author, decided to pause the queue so customers would not keep reaching a checkout that could not process orders. The company’s inventory reporting still showed enough stock that the team expected to fulfill a significant number of orders from people waiting in line.

- The cards included in this very special Secret Lair drop will be completely new to Magic, depicting the iconic characters of the long-running and critically acclaimed TV series.
After the queue resumed and the backlog was processed, the backlog proved larger than expected and inventory settled much closer to sold out than the initial estimates indicated. Wizards says thousands of customers spent roughly an extra hour and a half waiting without useful information, while only a few obtained the remaining stock when sales resumed. Customers reported a queue that did not move, checkout errors, missing confirmation emails, and uncertainty for hours about whether an order had gone through.
Hodgins wrote, “A sale isn’t a success just because inventory hits zero.”

- Check out these bugs I found under a rotten log in the graveyard! I’ve never seen bugs like this before. They’re so awesome. I don’t know which is my favorite. I really like the green and blue ones, but I also like the green and pink ones. My pockets are full of ’em! I also saw a hand coming out of the ground under the log. It didn’t have much skin, but the fingers started moving. Cool, right?
