A Magento card skimmer is malicious JavaScript that runs in a shopper’s browser on a checkout page and can send payment data to an unauthorized destination. The store may still load and accept transactions, so an uptime check can report success without confirming that checkout scripts are safe. Availability and browser-side integrity are different things.
How does a Magento card skimmer steal cards?
Digital skimming, also called Magecart or form-jacking, involves inserting malicious scripts into checkout pages to collect and exfiltrate cardholder data and other sensitive information. Mastercard describes the technique in its historical Magento 1 security bulletin.
The relevant sequence is straightforward: the attacker gets a script into the checkout page, that script executes in the shopper’s browser, and it can initiate an unauthorized transfer of data. The page can continue responding normally while this happens. That is why a successful checkout or an available storefront does not by itself establish that browser-side code is trustworthy.

Uptime monitoring generally checks whether a URL or service responds. A skimmer is a client-side integrity and data-security problem: it can operate during a shopper’s checkout even when the page is reachable. An uptime success therefore cannot establish whether scripts were changed, whether browser-entered data is being captured, or where browser requests send data.

This distinction follows from the documented attack mechanism; it is not a claim that a particular skimmer bypasses a specific monitoring product. Treat uptime results as evidence of availability, not as a security verdict on checkout code.
Which controls address the risk?

Use CSP to control browser resources
Adobe’s CSP overview describes two modes. Report-only records policy violations without blocking the resources that trigger them. Restrict mode enforces the configured policy and blocks resources outside it. Adobe also supports sending violation reports to a collection endpoint. Report-only can help reveal what a store needs before enforcement; a restrictive policy must account for legitimate checkout resources to avoid disrupting the payment flow.

Use SRI to detect unexpected resource changes
With SRI, the browser compares a fetched resource with an expected cryptographic hash. Adobe’s SRI documentation lists support for Commerce and Magento Open Source 2.4.4-p9, 2.4.5-p8, 2.4.6-p6, 2.4.7, 2.4.8, and later, with default coverage on payment pages. Merchants can extend coverage. Confirm the deployed version and configuration rather than assuming a particular store has the default behavior.

Use the Security Scan Tool as one signal
Adobe describes its Security Scan Tool as a free service that can be scheduled weekly, daily, or on demand, with historical reports. Adobe Experience League reported that the tool includes more than 21,000 security tests in documentation last updated June 15, 2026. That is the tool’s test count, not a measure of skimmer prevalence or proof of continuous checkout integrity.

What Magento versions and history matter?
Adobe says CSP support dates from Commerce and Magento Open Source 2.3.5. Its CSP developer documentation says version 2.4.7 and later use restrict mode by default on payment pages and report-only mode by default on other pages. Defaults do not guarantee that a particular deployment is current or configured as expected.
For SRI, Adobe lists the supported releases and patch levels above; check the deployed edition and patch level before relying on that support. Mastercard’s Magento 1 bulletin warned that Adobe support for Magento 1 would end after June 2020. That is a dated historical warning and should not be read as a complete statement about forks or third-party support today.

How should a merchant check a Magento checkout?
- Confirm the platform version and patch status. Check the deployed Commerce or Magento Open Source version against Adobe’s official security guidance and applicable release notes. Adobe’s CSP overview and SRI documentation explain relevant version support.
- Review checkout scripts and their provenance. Identify which scripts load on payment pages and why they are present; unexplained or unexpected resources deserve investigation.
- Evaluate CSP in the deployed configuration. Where appropriate, begin in report-only mode, review violations, and configure policy and reporting before enforcing restrict mode. Adobe documents the modes and reporting in its CSP developer documentation.
- Check SRI coverage. Verify which payment-page resources receive integrity checks and whether additional coverage is appropriate for the store’s deployment.
- Add the Security Scan Tool as another check. Schedule scans or run them on demand, and review the reports alongside other security signals.
- Keep availability monitoring in its lane. Use uptime alerts to identify reachability problems, but do not treat a passing check as evidence that checkout scripts or browser data flows are safe.
