To reduce abusive bot traffic on a self-hosted Magento store, combine behavior-based investigation with controls at the right layer: use Magento CAPTCHA for relevant forms, and evaluate your host, reverse proxy, CDN, or WAF for traffic filtering and rate limits. Start by identifying what the traffic is doing, then monitor and tune controls before blocking. No single CAPTCHA, WAF rule, or robots.txt file should be treated as a complete anti-scraping system.
First decide which traffic is actually a problem
Search-engine and social crawlers can help people discover your catalog. High-volume catalog retrieval, repeated requests to sensitive endpoints, credential attacks, or traffic that degrades the shopping experience may warrant intervention. A crawler’s user-agent string is not proof of its identity: malicious bots can claim to be legitimate crawlers, so investigate the observed behavior instead of blocking on the label alone.
Adobe’s bots tab guidance for Observation for Adobe Commerce, updated August 19, 2026, describes reviewing non-cached request counts, IPs, errors, and bot names. Treat these signals together. A high request count can merit investigation, but does not by itself establish malicious intent.

Build a useful baseline
Review available logs and monitoring data by IP address, route, request volume, status code, cache behavior, timing, and authenticated state where your logging permits. Compare unusual traffic with normal storefront activity and note which paths or customer actions are affected. If a request claims to come from a known search crawler, verify that identity using the crawler’s published verification method before allowing or blocking it.
#1 Best Overall
Choose controls that match the behavior
Magento’s built-in CAPTCHA options are aimed at protecting actions such as sign-in and password reset; they are not a general throttle for every catalog request. Broader traffic controls usually belong at the host, reverse proxy, CDN, or WAF boundary, where the available rules depend on your deployment and service.
Use Magento CAPTCHA for form and account abuse
Adobe documents standard CAPTCHA and Google reCAPTCHA support for Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce. Admin CAPTCHA can protect sign-in and password-reset forms, with display configured to appear always or after a threshold of failed attempts. Storefront CAPTCHA can be used for customer actions such as login. See Adobe’s CAPTCHA configuration documentation, updated June 15, 2026.
Check the documentation and configuration for your Magento version and installed modules, then confirm which forms are actually protected in your store. CAPTCHA can add friction for automated submissions, but it does not automatically cover every storefront form or stop a bot that is retrieving public catalog pages.

Evaluate controls at the network or edge boundary
For a self-hosted store, ask your hosting provider or security operator what firewall, reverse proxy, CDN, or WAF controls are available. Assess whether the service can apply limits to the routes and APIs causing trouble, distinguish likely legitimate crawlers from unwanted automation, and provide useful logs and actions such as monitoring, allowing, challenging, rate-limiting, or blocking. The implementation must match the path traffic takes to your origin; verify that path and the service’s current capabilities before relying on a rule.

AWS documents Bot Control as an AWS WAF managed rule group. Its capabilities include common bot detection and targeted detection for bots that do not self-identify; targeted inspection may use rate limiting, CAPTCHA, browser challenges, fingerprinting, and behavior heuristics. These are AWS-specific capabilities, not a description of every WAF. Consult the AWS WAF Bot Control documentation, inspected October 7, 2026, and verify how the service fits your traffic architecture and current rule version.
Keep Adobe Commerce Advanced Security in its stated scope
Adobe Commerce Advanced Security is documented for Adobe Commerce on Cloud Infrastructure (PaaS) projects only. Adobe describes Fastly-powered bot management, advanced rate limiting for URLs and APIs, and Layer 7 DDoS protection. It is not evidence that the same controls are included with a self-hosted Magento Open Source or Adobe Commerce installation. Adobe’s page, updated September 8, 2026, says configuration changes currently require working through Adobe Support; availability and configuration processes can change. Read Adobe Commerce Advanced Security for the current scope.
How the documented options differ
| Option | Where it applies | Documented controls | Key boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Magento CAPTCHA | Magento Open Source and Adobe Commerce | Standard CAPTCHA and Google reCAPTCHA; Admin sign-in and password-reset protection with always-on or failed-attempt threshold behavior; storefront customer actions such as login. Adobe CAPTCHA documentation, updated June 15, 2026. | Form protection is not a blanket control for public catalog retrieval; verify the forms enabled in your version and configuration. |
| Adobe Commerce Advanced Security | Adobe Commerce on Cloud Infrastructure (PaaS) only | Fastly-powered bot management, advanced rate limiting for URLs and APIs, and Layer 7 DDoS protection. Adobe documentation, updated September 8, 2026. | Not documented as an included feature for self-hosted stores; current configuration changes require Adobe Support. |
| AWS WAF Bot Control | AWS WAF managed rule group; exact fit depends on the store’s traffic architecture | Common and targeted bot detection; targeted inspection can use rate limiting, CAPTCHA, browser challenges, fingerprinting, and behavior heuristics. AWS documentation, inspected October 7, 2026. | AWS-specific behavior and costs do not apply automatically to other WAFs; check current service documentation and deployment fit. |
| Host, proxy, CDN, or another WAF | Depends on the provider and how requests reach the origin | Route-level limits, bot handling, logging, and enforcement actions must be verified against the chosen service and configuration. | No single capability set applies across providers; confirm available controls, support, tuning, and pricing directly with the provider. |
Roll out enforcement in stages
- Set a baseline. Record normal request patterns and identify the routes, IPs, status codes, cache behavior, and time periods associated with the unwanted activity. Preserve enough context to distinguish a harmful pattern from a busy but legitimate customer or crawler.
- Choose the narrowest relevant control. Use CAPTCHA for the account or form action under attack. For excessive requests to catalog routes or APIs, investigate a route-specific rate limit or bot rule at the boundary that handles that traffic.
- Test outside production. For managed rules, assess likely impact in a staging or testing environment before deploying to production. AWS’s Bot Control deployment guidance, inspected October 7, 2026, recommends testing and tuning before production enforcement.
- Observe production matches before blocking. Where your WAF supports count or monitor mode, use it to see which requests would match. Review logs, identify desired traffic that would be affected, and tune exceptions before enabling a blocking action. AWS recommends this approach for its Bot Control deployment; other services may use different names or procedures.
- Enforce narrowly and review results. Apply the smallest effective rule, then monitor both unwanted requests and legitimate traffic. Revisit the rule when routes, customer behavior, or crawler patterns change, and roll back or adjust it if it disrupts valid shopping or indexing activity.
Keep security hygiene separate from scraping enforcement
Adobe’s general security guidance recommends CAPTCHA or reCAPTCHA and Security Scans for each installation domain. Include those measures in routine Magento security operations, but do not mistake them for a complete bot-management strategy. See Adobe Commerce Security, updated August 20, 2026.

For a self-hosted store, the practical decision is to protect the specific asset under pressure: account actions with appropriate CAPTCHA, abusive request patterns with tuned boundary controls, and the overall installation with ongoing security hygiene and monitoring. Keep legitimate search and customer traffic in view whenever you tighten enforcement.
