The Mafia III launch trailer for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S is the subject here, but the official record is narrower than the title suggests. No official trailer page could be verified, and the verifiable platform listings are for Mafia III: Definitive Edition on PS4 and on Xbox Series X|S. This guide separates what is confirmed from what is not, and it explains why Mafia III is easy to confuse with a different game of nearly the same name.
What the trailer title claims, and what can be verified
The title pairs Mafia III with PS5 and Xbox Series X|S launch material. Two parts of that claim are supported by official listings. The first is a Xbox Series X|S store listing for Mafia III: Definitive Edition. The second is a PlayStation listing for the same edition, but that listing is for PS4, not PS5. A PS5 listing for Mafia III was not confirmed in the sources reviewed.

Mafia III in brief
Mafia III is set in 1968 in New Bordeaux, a fictional version of New Orleans. The player follows Lincoln Clay, a Vietnam veteran who returns home. After the Italian Mafia kills his surrogate family, Clay seeks revenge and builds a criminal family of his own.
#1 Best Overall
2K announced the game on April 19, 2016, with an original release date of October 7, 2016 on PS4, Xbox One and Windows PC. Haden Blackman, studio head and creative director at Hangar 13, described the setting as “a unique and powerful backdrop for our hard-boiled story of crime, betrayal, loyalty and revenge.” That is the original 2016 release; it says nothing about later console versions.

The table below uses only what the official listings state. Where a listing does not give a detail, the cell says so rather than filling it in.

- THE MAFIA HAVE INFILTRATED YOUR TOWN! You must find them and eliminate them. Each day you, the civilians, will hold a town hall meeting to vote for a suspected Mafia to eliminate. Get it right and you might survive. Get it wrong, and you're in danger because every night the Mafia secretly meet and choose a civilian to kill...
- BLUFF, DECEIVE & OUTSMART YOUR FRIENDS: Every player has a secret role and no one knows who to trust. Read your friends, defend yourself, form alliances, and use clever deception and deduction to lead your team to victory.
- 19 UNIQUE CHARACTERS: Go beyond classic Mafia and Civilians with exciting special roles including the Doctor, Detective, Vigilante, Godfather, Bus Driver, Cupid, Magician, Miller, Postman, Undercover Cop, Bartender, Lawyer, Made Man, Rival Mafia & more! Mix up the roles to create a different game every time.
- MADE FOR BIG GROUPS: Bring everyone into the game with 38 role cards and support for 7 to 30+ players. Perfect for parties, family game nights, large groups, camping trips, team building events, and gatherings where everyone wants to play together.
- QUICK TO PLAY, ENDLESSLY REPLAYABLE: Fun 15–45 minute rounds make it easy to play again and again. Changing roles, secret identities, accusations, alliances, and unexpected betrayals ensure no two games play out the same way.
| Platform | Listing and edition | Included content (as listed) | Release date and performance claims |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS4 | Mafia III: Definitive Edition, PlayStation listing | Base game, Faster, Baby!, Stones Unturned, Sign of the Times, Family Kick-Back pack, Judge, Jury & Executioner pack | May 19, 2020 |
| Xbox Series X|S | Mafia III: Definitive Edition, Xbox store listing | Base game, story DLC and bonus packs (individual titles not stated in the listing reviewed) | Release date not stated; listing describes 60 FPS gameplay and technical improvements |
| PS5 | No Mafia III listing confirmed | Not stated | Not stated |
Because the PS5 row has no confirmed listing, a PS5 version of Mafia III should not be assumed until a PlayStation Store page for it appears. The Xbox 60 FPS claim comes from the store description and has not been independently measured here.

A 2K support page, updated October 8, 2026, describes a PS5 and Xbox Series X|S release for Mafia: Definitive Edition. That game is a 2020 title centred on Tommy Angelo, not Lincoln Clay. Its name is close enough to Mafia III that readers searching for the PS5 and Series X|S release may land on it.

Upgrade terms on that support page apply to Mafia: Definitive Edition only. They should not be read as evidence of a Mafia III upgrade path, and the sources reviewed do not establish one.
Checks before you buy or play
- Confirm the exact title in the store listing reads “Mafia III: Definitive Edition” and not “Mafia: Definitive Edition.”
- Match the platform on the listing to your console. Do not assume a PS4 listing covers PS5, or that an Xbox listing covers an older Xbox.
- Check the current price, your region and whether the product is physical or digital. None of these was stated in the sources reviewed, and they change over time.
- Look for an explicit upgrade statement on the store page before assuming you can move a copy you already own to a newer console.
- For the trailer itself, check the publisher’s official channels and confirm the upload date before quoting it.
Bottom line for readers searching this trailer
Mafia III is a confirmed 2016 game with a verified Definitive Edition listing on PS4 and Xbox Series X|S. A PS5 version and the trailer’s content are not verified here. Treat the trailer as unconfirmed until you can see it on an official page, and keep Mafia: Definitive Edition separate from every Mafia III claim.
