Madan Mitra has not announced that he is quitting politics. In a report published October 1, 2026, Hindustan Times said the rebel Trinamool Congress MLA was trying to decide how gradually he might withdraw from active politics, after expressing growing disillusionment with it.
What did Madan Mitra say?
Hindustan Times attributed two comments to Mitra, reporting that PTI had reported his remarks. He described politics as “a dumping ground for anti-social elements” and said his hatred for politics was increasing. The phrase is Mitra’s characterization, not an independently established description of political life.
He also said he was “personally taking a decision, or trying to take a decision, about how gradually I can withdraw from politics.” That wording describes deliberation, not a completed decision. The report did not say he had resigned as an MLA, left his party, or formally retired. The published article does not include a primary interview transcript or recording, so its quotation is attributed reporting rather than independently verifiable verbatim speech.

Not according to the October 1 report: it says he was considering a gradual withdrawal, but does not establish that he had made or acted on a final decision. It also reports no formal resignation from the West Bengal Assembly. Mitra remained the Kamarhati MLA at the time of the article.

Why were his remarks politically significant?
The report placed the comments amid a split within the TMC. It said Mitra had stepped down from organisational responsibilities and joined a rebel camp associated with Ritabrata Banerjee, while retaining his Assembly seat. The remarks came ahead of by-elections scheduled for October 6, 2026, in Nandigram and Rejinagar. Those details describe the situation as reported on October 1; they do not establish what happened in the elections or how the political situation developed afterward.

The same report said Mitra resigned as a minister in 2014 after the CBI arrested him in connection with the Saradha chit fund case. It also reported that he faced questioning and arrest in connection with the Narada sting operation, and said he denied wrongdoing in both matters. Arrests and investigations are not proof of guilt, and the article does not establish the cases’ outcomes.
Separately, Hindustan Times, attributing the account to PTI, reported that the Enforcement Directorate summoned Mitra’s wife and two sons for questioning on July 14 in a money-laundering probe into an alleged municipal recruitment scam, and searched seven locations. That report does not establish the probe’s current status or a finding against Mitra or any member of his family.
