This was a launch-week promotion, not a current offer. An AnandTech forum post dated September 9, 2005, claimed MacMall had the newly introduced iPod nano lineup in stock, with free engraving, shipping after a mail-in rebate, and a Belkin TuneCast FM transmitter after a mail-in rebate. The post listed prices of $194 for 2GB and $244 for 4GB; those retailer details are forum-reported, not independently confirmed inventory or checkout records.

What the September 9, 2005 post promised

The AnandTech thread said MacMall had the new iPod nanos “in stock now” and listed two prices. It also advertised free engraving, shipping after a mail-in rebate, and a Belkin TuneCast FM transmitter after a mail-in rebate. The surviving thread does not include an archived MacMall product page, order record, stock count, or the rebate forms, so it documents the claim rather than proving what every customer could buy or ultimately receive. Read the AnandTech thread.

Item What the post said What can be established
2GB nano $194 Listed in the forum post; whether the price was before or after rebates, tax, or other conditions is not established.
4GB nano $244 Listed in the forum post; whether the price was before or after rebates, tax, or other conditions is not established.
Shipping Free after mail-in rebate The buyer likely paid shipping upfront and then had to submit a rebate claim.
Belkin TuneCast FM transmitter Free after mail-in rebate The exact model, upfront cost, rebate amount, and realized net cost are not documented in the thread.
Engraving Free The thread does not specify character limits, placement, turnaround, or return conditions.

What “all iPod nanos” meant at launch

Apple announced the first-generation iPod nano on September 7, 2005, with two capacities—2GB and 4GB—each offered in black or white. That makes four launch configurations: 2GB black, 2GB white, 4GB black, and 4GB white. The forum headline’s “all” most plausibly refers to those four variants, not every nano generation or capacity that would follow. Apple’s announcement did not include the later 1GB nano, which EveryMac records as arriving in February 2006. Apple’s launch announcement and EveryMac’s nano history provide the product context.

Launch configuration Apple U.S. suggested retail price at launch
2GB, black or white $199
4GB, black or white $249

How the listed prices compared with Apple’s launch prices

Compared with Apple’s U.S. suggested retail prices, the post’s figures were $5 lower for each capacity: $194 versus $199 for 2GB, and $244 versus $249 for 4GB. That is a comparison of the listed figures only. The thread does not clarify whether they were the checkout prices, whether both colors shared them, or whether any purchase conditions applied. It is therefore not possible to calculate a verified final price or savings after rebates, tax, and shipping.

Why the “free” extras were not immediate discounts

Shipping required a rebate claim

The original wording qualified shipping as free “after MIR,” meaning after a mail-in rebate. A customer would generally need to pay the charge first and submit the required paperwork to seek reimbursement. The thread does not preserve the shipping amount, claim deadline, proof-of-purchase requirements, or rebate outcome, so it cannot establish that every buyer received the money back.

The transmitter was also rebate-based

The post named a Belkin TuneCast FM transmitter and described it as free after mail-in rebate. Without the rebate terms, its initial cost and final net cost cannot be verified. Apple said the nano used the same 30-pin dock connector as the iPod and iPod mini, but the thread does not identify which TuneCast model was involved; compatibility should not be assumed for a specific model from the family name alone.

Engraving details are missing

Free engraving was part of the claim, but the thread does not establish the available text length, design, processing time, or effect on returns. One participant offered a negative opinion about the engraving compared with Apple’s service; that is an individual comment, not a documented or controlled quality comparison.

Availability changed during launch month

A later participant in the same thread reported on September 21, 2005, that the black 4GB model was out of stock. That report does not establish MacMall’s complete inventory position, but it shows why the September 9 “in stock today” claim should be treated as time-specific rather than as a lasting promise of all four variants.

What Apple’s launch announcement confirms about the product

Apple’s announcement describes a compact flash-based music player with a color display, Click Wheel, and 30-pin dock connector. Apple stated that the 2GB and 4GB models could hold up to 500 and 1,000 songs, respectively, and gave a weight of 1.5 ounces and battery life of up to 14 hours under its stated test conditions. The announcement listed Mac OS X 10.3.4 or later, or Windows 2000/XP SP2, plus USB 2.0 and iTunes 4.9 or later, as system requirements. These are Apple’s launch-era specifications, not independent measurements of an individual unit.

How to read the promotion as an archival deal

  • Date matters: Apple announced the nano on September 7, 2005; the AnandTech deal post followed on September 9. “Today” refers to the date of that post.
  • Separate product facts from retail claims: Apple’s announcement establishes the launch lineup and specifications. The forum thread records what a poster said about MacMall’s prices, stock, and extras.
  • Do not treat rebates as instant savings: Rebates can involve upfront payment, paperwork, deadlines, and possible delays or denials. The surviving thread does not establish the final net price or fulfillment of either rebate.
  • Remember the personalization trade-off: Engraving may matter to resale or return flexibility, but the available thread does not say what MacMall’s policies were.
