Macklin Celebrini assisted on all three of San Jose’s goals after the Sharks fell behind, including Luca Cagnoni’s overtime winner, as San Jose opened its season with a 4-3 win over the Florida Panthers on October 1, 2026.
Celebrini assisted on both of Will Smith’s goals
Celebrini’s three assists connected him to the Sharks’ second-period push and the decisive play in overtime. He set up both Will Smith goals: one short-handed and one on the power play. Those goals brought San Jose back into the game after Florida had taken the lead.
Cagnoni scored his first NHL goal to win it
In overtime, Celebrini and Smith assisted on Luca Cagnoni’s goal at 3:14, giving San Jose the 4-3 victory. It was Cagnoni’s first NHL goal. After the game, he called it “Probably the best goal of my life,” and said an overtime winner was “Hard to write one better than.” NHL.com’s October 2 recap quotes Cagnoni describing the moment as an “unreal feeling.”

The October 1 game at SAP Center was San Jose’s season opener. Mason Marchment scored in his Sharks debut, while goaltender Yaroslav Askarov made 23 saves, according to the NHL recap.
