The 2024 16-inch MacBook Pro with M4 Pro or M4 Max is best for people whose demanding creative, engineering, research, or development work can use its large display and high-end performance. Its main drawbacks are its premium, now-generation-dependent price, the M4 Max’s lower Apple-rated battery estimates, and the fact that many everyday users do not need this much capability. In 2026, Apple has announced M5 Pro and M5 Max successors, so compare current local prices and configurations before buying an M4 model.

What the 16-inch M4 MacBook Pro does well

A large, bright screen for detailed work

Apple’s 2024 specifications list a 16.2-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with a native resolution of 3456 by 2234 pixels and 254 pixels per inch. Apple rates its contrast ratio at 1,000,000:1, with peak HDR brightness up to 1,600 nits and sustained full-screen XDR brightness up to 1,000 nits. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurement results. An optional nano-texture finish was also offered to reduce reflections. Apple’s technical specifications and its 2024 announcement describe the display options.

Two performance tiers, with a high memory ceiling

The M4 Pro configuration supports up to a 14-core CPU and 20-core GPU; M4 Max reaches up to a 16-core CPU and 40-core GPU. Apple’s M4 family announcement lists unified memory options up to 64GB for M4 Pro and up to 128GB for M4 Max, with exact configurations depending on the chip variant. The Max’s larger GPU and higher memory ceiling can matter for GPU-heavy 3D work, video pipelines, and projects that need more memory. Those advantages are useful only if the work can use them, so compare the configuration cost with actual application and project demands.

Apple also published task-specific performance comparisons, including a claim that M4 Pro renders scenes in Maxon Redshift up to four times faster than a 16-inch Intel Core i9 MacBook Pro and up to three times faster than a 16-inch M1 Pro model. These are Apple-reported comparisons for a named workload and older reference laptops, not independent benchmark results or a guarantee for other applications. Details appear in Apple’s M4 Pro and M4 Max announcement.

Built-in ports for peripherals and external gear

Apple lists three Thunderbolt 5 USB-C ports, an SDXC card slot, HDMI, a 3.5-mm headphone jack, and MagSafe 3. Thunderbolt 5 is rated for up to 120 Gbps. This selection can simplify connecting common peripherals, displays, cards, and high-bandwidth external gear, though the ports a particular workflow needs still matter. See Apple’s port and connectivity specifications.

Long battery estimates, plus a capable camera

Apple estimates up to 24 hours of video streaming and 17 hours of wireless web use for M4 Pro, compared with up to 21 hours of video streaming and 14 hours of wireless web use for M4 Max. These are Apple’s maximum test estimates; actual runtime varies with workload, screen brightness, and settings. Apple lists a 100-watt-hour battery and includes a 140W USB-C power adapter and USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. It also lists a 12MP Center Stage camera. Macworld’s November 2024 review counted performance, Thunderbolt 5, the camera, and nano-texture glass among the model’s strengths; that is the review’s editorial assessment, not a controlled comparison across every configuration.

What to weigh before buying

Price and the newer generation

This is a premium workstation laptop, and the M4 generation is no longer Apple’s newest Pro tier. TechRadar reported the M5 Pro and M5 Max successors in March 2026 and characterizes the 16-inch M4 as expensive; its September 2026 laptop guide also notes that casual users may not need this level of performance. A discounted M4 may still suit a particular workload, but value depends on actual local price, stock, and configuration. Compare like-for-like memory and storage against an available M5 Pro or M5 Max model, then decide whether the newer generation’s changes justify the difference. TechRadar’s March 2026 M5 announcement coverage and its September 2026 laptop guide provide current-generation context.

M4 Pro or M4 Max?

Choose by workload rather than by the higher-tier name. M4 Pro is the more sensible starting point when its CPU, GPU, and memory options meet the size of your projects. M4 Max is easier to justify when your software can take advantage of its larger GPU resources or you need a supported configuration with more unified memory. Compare the exact available chip, memory, and storage options with your project needs and total price; the maximum figures describe the family ceiling, not every configuration.

  • Apple M4 Max chip delivers exceptional performance for advanced workflows, including AI development, 3D rendering, video production, software engineering, and professional content creation.
  • 48GB unified memory enables seamless multitasking and efficient handling of large datasets, complex projects, virtual machines, and resource-intensive applications.
  • 1TB SSD storage provides ultra-fast boot times, rapid file access, and ample space for professional software, media libraries, and large project files.
  • 16-inch Liquid Retina XDR display features exceptional brightness, deep contrast, P3 wide color, and remarkable detail for color-critical creative and professional work.
  • Advanced camera, studio-quality microphones, and immersive six-speaker audio system enhance video conferencing, content creation, and entertainment experiences.
  • GPU-heavy or memory-intensive work: Consider whether the application and project sizes benefit from M4 Max’s higher GPU and memory ceilings.
  • Work that fits M4 Pro: Avoid paying for Max capacity that your typical workload will not use.
  • Long stretches away from power: Factor in Apple’s lower maximum battery estimates for M4 Max, while remembering they are test estimates rather than predicted personal runtime.

Battery advantage varies by chip

Apple’s maximum estimates are three hours lower on M4 Max than M4 Pro for both video streaming and wireless web. That makes battery endurance a real point to weigh when choosing between the chip tiers, but the estimates do not establish how long either configuration will last in a demanding real-world workload.

Wi-Fi 7 is absent

Macworld’s November 8, 2024 review noted the lack of Wi-Fi 7 as a drawback and said it would have been welcome for future-proofing. That omission alone does not establish how well the laptop performs on any particular network. Read Macworld’s model-specific review.

The 16-inch format is not for every buyer

The larger format makes sense when you value screen area and workstation use enough to choose this size. If your work is mostly everyday browsing, documents, or other tasks that do not need this performance tier, TechRadar notes that a less expensive laptop may be a better fit. Compare the current smaller-model options on price, screen needs, and workload rather than assuming the 16-inch configuration is automatically the better purchase.

How to decide whether an M4 model is worth it now

  1. List your real workload. Identify the applications, project sizes, and tasks that make your current machine slow or limit your work.
  2. Set the required configuration. Choose the chip, unified memory, and storage needed for those tasks, using the exact configuration options available where you plan to buy.
  3. Compare current prices. Check the M4 model’s local price and stock against a comparable M5 Pro or M5 Max configuration. A generation-old model is not automatically a bargain.
  4. Account for your use away from power. Use Apple’s chip-specific battery estimates as a reference, not as a promise of runtime for your workload.
  5. Choose the screen size deliberately. Pay for the 16-inch format when its workspace benefits matter enough to you; otherwise compare smaller options that meet your performance needs.
